BURIAL, or CREMATION?

Post by browneyedgirl » Sat Aug 28, 2004 12:48 pm

If I were alone in the World--no friends or family-I'd choose to be cremated and have my ashes blown to the 4 Winds--ashes to ashes, dust to dust-just dust in the wind.
But,I'm not quite alone so, out of respect to my family, I choose to be buried-have a graveside Memorial Service perhaps. Then, if my family wants to remember me by placing flowers on my grave every anniverary of my death(a USA tradition in some families), they have the option. Hell, I won't know the difference anyway, regardless! :D
At my service I'd like a few songs to be played(Forever, is one), and maybe a few words&a prayer by a local minister of my family's choice, and thats it--no big hurrah or pomp&circumstance. Goodbye, adios--see ya in the Next Life---IF there is such a thing! ;)

Funerals and such are for the Living--so they may accept that their loved one is truly gone--some sort of ceremony usually helps that grieving process. Loss, as painful as it truly is, is a certain unavoidable part of Life......I have saw all my truly loving&wonderful grandparents pass on, endured deaths of 2 of my children(babies),shed tears over 2 fav Uncles,&had twinges of heartache over cousins, and other distant relatives over the years as I said Goodbye to them. I like to believe I will see them all again on "the Other Side".:)
Yes, I am very fortunate to have a very close family, so loss of anyone is taken very seriously.

Another alternative I have thought of has been leaving my body to Science. Its not a joke---a large University Medical School in Alabama pays the family a set amount up front for use of the corpse(not much--maybe about thousand dollars). The body is used for a year for Med students to practice on-- at the end of that year the body is given back to the family&the university pays for the funeral, or whatever means the family wants to do with the body. I heard this Univesity has so many offers that they have to actually turn down people for this option! :)

There is a saying,"nothing is certain in this Life but taxes.....and, Death."
So, the smart thing to do, if possible, is plan for its eventuality......

I dont really care because it wont really be of my interest anymore if i get in that situation ;)

But i think cremation is just fine, i dont believe in any afterlife or metaphysical stuff, a corpse is just a corpse and quite worthless while being dead. Of course there are many people who see this different and the aspect of having a "real" place to visit the dead is of great importance for many people. And, like you said, also to realize that someone is gone forever.

I dont think that getting buried is of any use, as the person is gone and the body is just a shell. We can always think of lost ones, as we have our memories, i dont think this is bound to certain situations or places - so for me it isnt that important...

Although i like old graveyards... but i also think that the general idea isnt anymore the same. What happens to a grave after perhaps 30 years? It gets destroyed and the place is free for renting again ;)

One reason for me to think that burials are a bit controversial are the prices and the general behaviour of those responsible for burials... its fucking expensive and imo they often exploit the bad situation of the relatives...

Cremation.
Reasons? ummm:a ) as TW Simphony said, there´s a big business around the burials. Here where I live is amazing the amount of money you have to pay for these services. The relatives have enough with going on with their lifes.
b) imo it´s not necesary to have a certain place to give tribute or remember a relative or a friend, or a person who deserves love and affection even after death.
c) at last, it is a personal choice. It´s probably the last decision you take about your life, ironically is about your death. If someone wants to demonstrate their love and affection and respect to me please respect my last decision, take my body to the crematory, as my soul (I would like to trust that and not in the sense we usually give to the word I mean, my past acts ) will stay alive. Throw my ashes to the place I´ve indicated you before, and have a beer in my name every aniversary of my death date! Cheers!

Well, so far, everyone in my family has been buried, so why break the tradition? I don't really care what'll become of me when I'm dead. I won't be needing my body anyway.

Well, the thing is, when I'm dead I'll have little use for my body, so I trust my remaining relatives will know what to do with my body. Hopefully they will have the good taste to throw a Reaganesque state funeral for me, but if not...I'll come back and haunt their asses!

That would help solve the problem of graves taking up so much space on Earth! :D

I prefer cremation... I don't want a christian ceremony cause I'm a pagan. I want my family to cremate me in the most simple way, don't want to make them spend much money with me... it will be just a body when I'm dead. After that I want them to go into a forest, spread my ashes and bury the rest, and in my grave stone will be written my name and the word Heathen. But before I also want them to donate all my organs cause there'll be people here that will need them much more than me.

Many peoples/tribes etc. have many different ways of dealing with the dead. Look at ancient egyptians.
Actually, burial 6 feet under is a relatively modern practice.
In ancient times, among scores of certain peoples, Cremation was the norm-not a "deviation".

Yes, that´s right. Also the ancient semitic tribes, really influenced by the mesopotamic civilization, specially about religion including funeral rituals.

I would really like one of those Viking ceremonies. It goes something like this:

The corpse is put on a huge tar-covered pyre on top of a cliff and then set alight. When the body is completely ablaze, the pyre is pushed off the cliff. The burning remains crash into the sea and are dispersed through the air and the sea. What a great way of reconciliation with the elements...

But maybe I've been watching too many films...

I also heard of a practice called "sky burial", the ideea is to take the body high up a mountain and leave it there to freeze or for the birds to feed on it... Interesting :D

do you mean donations of some of your organs?

I have considered that many times, and there´s no problem for me, if I this mean to help someone to continue living , except my eyes. That´s too personal.
