Hello? Timo's not a murderer or a drunk driver!
Nordic - must be the first difference of opinion for us in what, 5 years?
HMCW - well said.

That fine is WAAAAAAAY too steep---TT should protest! Plus, it was his first offence so that fine was doubly unjust! Too too much!

Yeah, welcome to Finland guys! You will obey the rules and law, or then you will cry and obey the rules and law!!!
Fines for a same offence in Finland are based on the idea of loosing a certain equal percent of daily income, no matte wether rich or poor. That would be equal if it worked as it was intented. Sometimes it fails, but in most cases it can be considered as fair punishment.

Hei guys, you should stop protesting.
I'm deeply sorry for Timo (and I mean it) that he has to pay so much for one single ticket, but on the other hand, Law is Law, and people know the rules and have to respect them. Even if you are a great famous guitar player or the leader of one of the biggest company from Finland (few years ago, the boss of a huge company - I think it was Saunalahti/Jiippi - had a ticket for high-speed, and if I remember right, the amount of his ticket was 1 million FIM (170 000€).
To make a comparaison, a 100€ ticket would totally ruin me

And probably that wasn't too bad for him as the car he was driving was Lamborghini Diablo, I would imagine the price of that car in Finland was some 2 million FIM

From what I remember, most part of the finnish tabloids talked more about his great car than about him!
I'm not sure, but from what I remember, the title of one of those tabloid was "Lamborghini driver got a 2M€ ticket for high-speed", and you had to read the article to know that this guy was a tiny_little_bit famous

Actually, it seems like a pretty fair system over there.
Some dumb fucking bitch in Shepard's Bush over here in London just left her fucking massive SUV in the middle of the road while she went to a shop. The entire road was blocked. The policeman there yells at her 'you're getting a ticket for that!' and what does she say?
'Go ahead. I can afford it' and walks off.
Such arrogance. If she was forced to pay a fine of £150,000 however... she'd think twice.
Rich people have a general feeling that they're above the law. I hate that.

Well, the law is the law, but in this shitty country of Finland, many laws are straight from the arse... Sometimes it's hard to remember that police is not the one who makes them, only follows.

Probably lots of Finns get caught speeding everyday, but because a Celeb(Rock Star)is involved, much more is being made of it than it really should be.
Us "worshippers" tend to believe our "idols" should not be held accountable for much.
I don't feel that way, but many do.
If he did that speeding thing, than he should pay a fine--BUT, still its too much! IMO, of course.

I don't think that the sum of that fine has much to do with Timo being famous. The cops ahve access to the database of paid taxes in recent years, and looks like in Timo's case they had only year 2003 to base their calculations on.
The court will straighten it out for sure, the fine has to be based on the income of the date the offence was done.
Complicated??? - Sure. But the Finnish parlament has the last vote on laws like this.
Me no likes their brainwork with this kind of equality.

We could use a law like that here in the States, with the way it's set up now, those who are wealthier pay peanuts, while those who are in the lower income bracket pay through the nose (even though it may be the same price for both). I never understood the mentality of taxing more money from people who have less.

Well either way whether your rich or poor shouldn't matter ..i mean would you go into a restaraunt and expect to pay 2 dollars for a hamburger because your poor or vice versa pay 100 for a hamburger becuase you rich....that to me doesn't make since....how bout this if you cant afford the ticket dont speed.... you shouldnt make a law that discriminates agaisnt wealthy people and expect them to pay thousands of dollars where as if they were poor they only pay a hundred that to me doesn't seem very fair....

"

That's the point. And because the idea is to stop both rich and poor people from killing each others on the road... Hello?!?! I hope your family dies in a car accident caused by a rich man doing 150 mph!

well actually the speed limit was never intended to save lives it was first implemented to save gas the safety was just a side effect.....and then again ill use logic on your inappropriate comment about my family...I rather they do get killed by a rich guy than a poor one... either way their dead at least I will get compensation from a rich guy....and besides the point about trying to make people care about other people is a social issue and sucking money out of the pockets of the rich will not fix it....

No offense (don't take it personally) but it sounds really inapropriate to think how big money you'll get, if your parents are killed in a car accident.
If my parents are killed, I won't care of the money. It won't make them come back. The only thing that would matter to me is that the murderer go to jail and is punished for what he did.
However, I agree about you, about the theory that the main aim of this law is that the governement can get lot of money from rich people. Still, it's a great thing, cause then, those rich can understand the danger of driving fast.

I think the ticket system is good, rising along with your income. But they do have a minimum fare too.
When I got my first and for this day only speeding ticket the "crime part" of it was about 300FIM and on top of that was added 300 or 400 FIM so that the ticket would reach the minimum fare 600 or 700 FIM (can't remember). around 100 euros though.
It really had an impact on me and I think since that I haven't ever gone that fast that I did back then.

I disagree about this. After all, very few people are rich enough to get these ridiculous tickets. Considering a mid-class person in Finland pays an approx average of 15 000 euros in taxes annually, some speeding tickets don't mean shit to the government economy, no matter how big they are.
And I have the same experience with ElDiablo, got a 100€ ticket last year and that seriously fucked up my plans at that time. It's the smallest you can get, even if you don't earn anything. So in this sense, these laws still discriminate the poorest, not the rich

No, I don't think it's fair to have any ticket over an excess of a couple hundred dollars. But I do think it's f*cked up when someone like me, who is disabled and on a limited income as it is, has to pay a price that to me, is very expensive, while someone who has much more money pays the exact same price and it is nothing to them. In a way, for them, it is like no big deal because they can afford it and they'll just break the law again. I think a law where the fee is based on the person's income would be a good thing. Tickets should strap you just enough financially to remind you of why you shouldn't break the law. It shouldn't cause you to be broke, but cost you enough money to where you can't buy that extra luxury you wanted that month or whatever. Then you learn your lesson, and think better of it next time. When a person who is extremely wealthy is paying the same fee for a ticket as I am, they aren't learning anything. It's just a drop in the bucket to them. On the other hand, I'm being fined more than just losing a luxury for the month. In the case of our last ticket, it was money taken away from our food budget, or money that we could use for something we needed. Granted, we shouldn't have parked there, but still, if it were someone in the same situation but driving a BMW, they would think nothing of it, and keep on doing the same old thing. On the other hand, we have learned never to park in that space even if the merchant at the store gives his permission that we can. In other words, I feel the fines should be set up to where whoever gets caught feels it enough in their wallet to think twice about it the next time, not so much that they're broke. I'd never condone that.
And by the way, there are restaurants that (in a way) do prioritize those with or without money. If you're poor, you go to the fast-food places. If you're rich, you can go to some place where a hamburger costs $25. Not that I ever would if I could, but I can't go to those places. The rich can go to McDonald's if they want to. I'd never be able to set foot into a fancy restaurant.

one judge here in America did for some guy who had a DUI made him drive around with big old magnets and the sides of his brand new car for at least a year saying something about his crime.....that to me was probably more influential having to always explain to people why he has to have those signs on his car...i bet he'll think more than twice before driving drunk again....
Hey, I'm all for that!
