But apparently not. Sharman Networks gave Google a DMCA notice regarding search results that Sharman feels infringe on its copyright in the "KAZAA" p2p application.

(I think this takes the cake as the greatest amount of hypocrisy I have ever seen exhibited in human behavior.. ever. And that really means something! )

Whaddup, Jens?
This isn't hypocritical... it's just plain stupid...
How ironic that the KAZAA people are upset about copyrights and trademarks.
Everybody point and laugh.

It's like a bad joke!
I think Google shouldn't do anything, just ignore that "warning".
And why the hell hasn't anyone complained against Sharman Networks anyway ?! or have they ?!

Well, because DMCA is in force in the US, Google do what they always do (and what they have to do to be safe). They remove the links and inform chillingeffects, and then make a direct link there instead... making all the details of whoever complains public. Including the links of course.
In many cases of course it makes the complainant look like a complete asshole. I think this all started with the Scientologists actually.
Some background info: the links that Sharman asked to have removed were all related to Kazaa Lite, which is an "unauthorized" version of kazaa with all the spyware and popup ads removed.
If you ever doubted that there was a hidden profit motive behind these supposedly "altruistic" p2p sharing schemes, this should be enough proof.
If you run normal Kazaa, Sharman basically is selling
* your personal information and clicking habits to marketers
* ads to advertisers (and they can do that with a guarantee of viewing!)
and they are using "shared" music ( = the labor of millions of unnamed musicians and composers) as the means to accomplish that.
Kazaa Lite, of course, is as good a p2p application as normal Kazaa -- actually, you can make the argument that it's a lot better from a technological standpoint.
The only thing "wrong" in the eyes of Sharman is that K-Lite is a direct attack on their profit making scheme.
And that is why they filed their DMCA complaint with google..
There has been a court decision against Sharman, but they were allowed to continue operating. I doubt that the last word has been said in the courts though.
One other thing -- it's of course not only music that's shared illegaly. A lot of money is being leeched out of the online porn industry. One wonders what countermeasures these unsavory people might think up.
Another thing I saw recently s that the RIAA is using the "kiddie porn angle" to try to effect change in people's (and perhaps lawmakers') minds...

This is just too hypocritical to a human being, there must be an error in the universal makeup.
I mean it, Sherman networks have what brazilians call "cara de pau" (this can't be translated literally, but it means GREAT, PLAIN STUPIDITY AND NERVE)

you'd be surprised at what else is going on... and at what other people are doing... this is just another "thing" to amaze us and remind us of the human stupidity

And to file charges against makers of derivatives of a program like this, is just plain hypocritical and stupid. If he wanted to prevent those programs from being made, he shouldn't have made such an 'evil' program to begin with!
