Production question for Matias

Post by crostrato » Mon Feb 14, 2011 3:31 pm

Hey, Matias, I have one question about drums recording on the Elysium. When you were interview for the new album you said that you were using some drum samples for Jorg drums thru some drum track software like Drumagog, so is it secret to know which samples library were they, because drums sounds so good?

Thank you.

Was just thinking....it makes sense to use triggers on everything since those acrylic drums maybe don't sound as good as maple or birch.

Hello there!

Yes, there's some samples used in Elysium. The mix between original drums and samples are around 60/40% so you can hear the original drums little bit louder than the samples. For snare and bass drum triggering I used Drumagog-software and all toms are triggered by human hand  It's easier to use a software for snare and bass drum triggering because of the complex dynamic layering but you have to check the phases afterwards. Samples what I used in snare and bass drum is actually from Jörg's acrylic set combined with some other samples. On toms I used Yamaha samples from AKAI Acoustic Drums-library matched with Jörg's tuning and drum size. The tom samples are ducked by the original toms, so in the mix you can hear only the samples' sustain.

ps. And what comes to Jörg's acrylic set: it sounds awesome! One of the best drum sets what I have recorded.

Heeeeeey, Matias, thank you soo much for this very fast answer, hehe, how good is when you talk about production of you favorite band directly from producer, soooo excited right now, thank you, hehe, and some funny story btw, I actually wanted to ask you this live, when you were in Croatia, I was that guy that bought you a drink and I was so excited about you sitting next to me, that I just left, seems like I m not ready to talk with Stratovarius guys yet. ;)
