I mean, Michael-fokken'-Kiske's highest recorded note is something like that (F#5 or G5 from Live In The UK -version of How Many Tears if I remember correctly). Dreamspace-booklet says they used computer on the album and I also remember TT saying that some of the highest notes on Dreamspace were achieved this way.
I can't give you the source, but I really have a problem believing Tolkki would just reach that kind of notes with his range.

Kiske is notable for having a wide range, Tolkki might only have a 3 octave range, but those octaves are 3-4-5, who knows. Kiske is probably a better singer, but I know for a fact that Hansi hit the 6th octaves with some "Primal Screams". Tolkki probably can't sing an F#5, but he can "hit" it.

Pfft, Hansi isn't worth Dio's shit.
Compared to Ozzy, though, Hansi sounds miles better. In fact, Ozzy has always been a shitty singer who was just lucky enough to appear in the beginnings of metal before vocals actually mattered. If Dio was in Sabbath before Ozzy, and Dio left and Ozzy applied, Iommi and Butler would shit on his application and laugh.
Notice how more metal singers now sound more like Dio than Ozzy? That's because Ozzy is in no way vocally talented. Just lucky.

Hansi has a wider vocal range, and a more explosive tone than Dio could ever hope for.

Dio's range can't touch Hansi's. More than 5 fucking octaves, and he actually sings with power, like, world domination power. Dio is a respectable singer who did a lot for Metal, but he would bow before Kursch, as would any metal singer who knows what's good for them.Ragehead91 wrote:Hansi is a good singer, but compared to Dio this guy is a amateur. Full Voiced Dio is only 3 octaves, Full voiced Kursch is at least 4, he can "Hit" 6 octaves, sing in around 5.
Not only that, but Dio, for all the nostalgia you may have about him, does not have a voice with the power or command of Hansi Kursch.
The climax of "The Eldar" is far beyond anything Dio could ever dream of singing

Dio is a thoroughly overrated singer that has a reputation propped up purely by being controversial, and whoring himself out to any popular band that needed a singer, unable to make a name for himself without the hype of being in such bands like Sabbath and Rainbow. Nobody would give two shits about Dio if he hadn't played with those two bands, (evidenced by the fact that he couldn't make a notable name for himself in Elf)
Kursh on the other hand has stuck with the same band for his entire career, making all of one member change in the bands history (Replacing the drummer).

Kürsch is great and BG is probably my favourite metal band, but IMO no one has as ballsy (powerful or commanding) voice as Dio. No one. A lot of Kürsch's impressive vocals is due to (outstanding and very creative) vocal harmonics created in studio, which is quite different from Dio's very organic style.
I don't know how familiar you're with Dio's work, but I recommend you at least listen to Stargazer by Rainbow, which I think is probably Dio's greatest moment.
EDIT:
I think my IQ just dropped a little...Rebel wrote:Dio is a thoroughly overrated singer that has a reputation propped up purely by being controversial, and whoring himself out to any popular band that needed a singer, unable to make a name for himself without the hype of being in such bands like Sabbath and Rainbow. Nobody would give two shits about Dio if he hadn't played with those two bands, (evidenced by the fact that he couldn't make a notable name for himself in Elf)
Kursh on the other hand has stuck with the same band for his entire career, making all of one member change in the bands history (Replacing the drummer).
What the fuck dude? Do you know anything about who Ronnie James Dio is and what he accomblished by himself? Do you have any idea how much influence he has had on metal?

Re: Ok, I REALLY want the Return to Dreamspace album.
Wait a minute...Dio was controversial? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
He wasn't controversial at all when he made a name for himself as a singer in Elf and Rainbow. Black Sabbath was controversial before he even came along. The only thing "controversial" about his band is the "evil" looking logo and the questionable Holy Diver cover. Other than that, none of his songs, actions, or ANYTHING have been controversial.
Plus, Dio is actually a role model. There's a reason why so many more people in metal look up to him rather than Ozzy. And not just because of his amazing voice. But also because Dio is a very nice person whose personality and life style is the complete opposite of the typical metal musician.
And that "couldn't make a name for himself" is perhaps the other dumbest thing I've ever heard. Holy Diver isn't considered one of the greatest heavy metal albums based on his name alone. It would have been considered one of the best metal albums of the eighties even if Dio was never in Sabbath or Rainbow.

Holy Diver was after he left Sabbath however. Holy Diver was no doubt good, but much of the fame he received was from working with already established artists like Ritchie Blackmore and Black Sabbath.Star_Ocean wrote:Wait a minute...Dio was controversial? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

I've listened to a LOT of Dio, and he's probably in my top 10 metal vocalists ever, influential, I get it, but he isn't in my top 5 for certain, and Hansi Kursch is solidly in that upper echelon of metal vocalists.
People that jump around from band to band like Dio did annoy me out of principal.

The vocal passage between 2:00 and 3:00 in that song. Find me something, anything, that Dio sings with that much power.

No offense, but between 2:00 and 3:00 is some really gross sounding vocals. I literally cringed in pain when I heard it.Rebel wrote:Holy Diver was after he left Sabbath however. May I ask what you're doing listening to Metal?
Or do you just not get outside of the Clean vocals much. Well, I have some news for you
Clean and high =/= powerful in every instance. That stuff you describe as "Pretty nasty" is what most metalheads would consider power in a voice.
And in terms of controversy, I'm talking "Dio is better than Ozzy, no Ozzy is better than Dio" Back and forth and back and forth for years on end.
But if roughness isn't your thing, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmu0LMlS8Us

Hansi can still do things with his voice that Dio simply cannot do.
(and that's what Metal is all about, doing stuff nobody else will, that, and heaviness)

Re: Ok, I REALLY want the Return to Dreamspace album.
First off we get it, your a huge Hansi Kursch fan and there is nothing wrong with that, I really like him as a singer as well.
However in this case I'm going to have to side with the mob here, first off just because Dio has been in multiple bands doesn't mean he's a bad singer, that is a very stupid cliche to assume that a singer who's been in multiple bands must mean they are bad singers, look at Tim Owens, the man has been in a ton of bands and is still one hell of a singer.
Secondly you can't sit there and deny the power of the albums that he's been on, one only has to listen to the Heaven and hell album once to know that Dio is one of the best singers out there, if that's not enough listen to Rainbow Rising, the self titled Elf album or his Holy diver album. I would love these albums regardless of the name that was attached to them.
Lastly don't take it out on Dio because your mad at one of the people here, that argument is just as stupid as the "my dad can beat up your dad" argument.
I'll end by saying I'm not picking on you or yelling at you, just stating what needs to be said.

Whoops, someone's angry because I hate a song they love! Oh no, call the opinion police and have me arrested! And I do love harsh vocals just as much as clean vocals. I just thought that song you posted was one of the worst examples you could have shown.
And that "controversy" bullshit you just came up with is an obvious excuse to get yourself out of the fact that you don't really know anything about Dio. Especially considering that "controversy" has nothing to do with Dio and Ozzy, but the just the fans. Ozzy and Dio don't argue with each other about who is better, do they? No, and therefore, they aren't part of that "controversy." It's called a "division of fans."
Or someone's just jealous that Dio is much more highly regarded, popular, and successful than Hansi ever will be. I mean, if Dio's still in your top 10 favorite vocalists, yet you find him immensely overrated, then you have either only listened to a couple of bands, or you're just jealous your favorite singer isn't as successful.
