i saw a lot of great opening acts like,on 1 evening Heavenly-Silent force-stratovarius,and guess what Silent force was even better then stratovarius. And Sonata Arctica and Rhapsody supporting Stratovarius, and not to forget SymphonyX.So there is nothing wrong with support acts. These days it,s the only way to present your self as a band to the metal Fans, cuz there is no airplay at all.

You have a good point. On the Elements Tour LOTS of people said they went to see SYMPHONY X, NOT Stratovarius

So, a carefully chosen supporting act can be VERY lucrative to a band.

yes that happened here in monterrey as well, a Yes! and Dream Theater concert, i went to see DT plus most of the people my age, but i was astounded by the amount of middle aged people (no offense) who went to see Yes! (i actually was impressed at how well they play, especially their guitarrist, who also played keys)

another example! The last Kamelot tour,Kotipelto and Epica where the support act,not to bad. But there is also a lot of crap i agree.most of the time it are the more local bands that sounds like shit.
There are a lot of band that i,m a fan of cuz got to know them on stage as a support act,to name a few,Freedom Call,Silent Force,Sonata Arctica,Nostradameus,Masterplan,Rob Rock,At Vance ,Gamma ray and there are many more Oh and not to forget Edguy they become big because of al the touring with other bands!!

Tolkki Rules! I wonder how many times I said Tolkki in my life. Too many! This is because he's awesome. Anyway, best way to promote your band is by getting on a good label. Opening for one good band's show won't do much.

yeah cuz everyone pays for the main band (most of the time) and i for one get really frustrated when the support band plays for a while...

o.k getting a good record label, and what do you think they gonna do? send you on the road as a support act.The labels don,t have money to advertise and buy airplay for new bands.Sorry but thats just the way it is!!

I know a few exceptions to this. A few months ago I went to Memphis to see supporting acts Children Of Bodom and Fear Factory (I still question this one) for Lamb Of Shit (ooops I mean god). These 2 bands owned that night and I walked out on Lamb Of God. I hate that band and see them as a symptom of the sorry state of metal. But I really question this move. Stratovarius was never that big of a band in the United States and this looks like a bad move not having support acts.

Timo Tolkki had nothing to do with this. Please just think about it a little, he has many other responsibilites and much other stuff to do than to micro-manage which support acts play where.
Let's just move on.
