Let me try to piece this one out. The first part of your post seems to suggest that I shouldn't enjoy the new material because it doesn't involve Tolkki, but believe it or not, there are OTHER capable musicians and songwriters in the world, and several of them worked together to make Nemesis happened. It was a good album, regardless of what happened.

I've followed Tolkki's history post-Stratovarius pretty closely, and I think I've been more fair to his work than any other critic I follow. I've published reviews of his last 3 albums, and I'm working on writing reviews of his Revolution Renaissance albums. I think some of his work has been pretty great, and I think some of his work has been very poor, and I think I've been honest with everything I've ever said about the man's music.


As to his mental health, I believe Timo himself said that he's been medicated since his nervous breakdown in 2004 and I believe him. I believe the reason that he has struggled to complete projects since leaving Stratovarius is not any sort of mental issue, but a combination of the following factors.

1. With very few exceptions, musicians who have left bands to try and make it on their own have had a LOT of trouble reaching that same level of recognition that they had in their band. As an older musician, it's really difficult to accept that you have to build from the ground up, and doing so can be a lot more frustrating than it was when they were younger.

2. I think he regrets what happened in Stratovarius, though he might not admit that to others. But in context of my first point, I think it's very emotionally draining for him to make power metal music, because he's got a lot of negative associations built up against his time in Stratovarius, given everything that's happened.

3. I think at a few different junctures, he's attempted to break out of power metal, most notably with his Age of Aquarius album (That I'm a fan of), as well as Saana (Which I am most definitely not a fan of). Through a combination of the fact that, at the end of the day he's not nearly as good writing these other kinds of music as he was at writing power metal, as well as the fact that everyone just expects him to make power metal, (Which he doesn't want to), these attempts always "fail" in the critical sense.

4. The fact that he doesn't want to do what he's good at, and isn't good at what he wants to do, leaves him feeling very trapped. It comes through in the music, because both of his Avalon albums have felt very uninspired. He's not putting in the effort he used to in terms of production, and his songwriting just doesn't have that precision that made me fall in love with his work with Stratovarius.

I think all of this is tragic, but at the same time, I think he brought quite a bit of it on himself. Even if it wasn't his fault, in my capacity as a critic, my job is to say whether or not an album is good, and I think I've done that.

Now, if we're talking about my habit of making fun of the man for being fat? That's personal. I had scheduled an interview that I thought was going to be really great, and I wanted to talk about stuff that was going to be really interesting for people to read. I had no interest in making the man look bad, because I think he's a complicated, an interesting person. It was going to be great, and I was really excited, because I still admire his work.

But he never showed up online for his interview, and when I asked why that was, I was lied to. Timo Tolkki found out I was a poster on this forum, and lied to his record label and to me about why he wasn't going to do the interview.
