Stratovarius Eternal

Stratovarius have broken their year long silence to reveal they are in the studio completing a new record. Its release will be preceded by a performance at Wacken Open Air Festival and followed by a full tour soon after release.
"Eternal" is the fourth studio album by the Finnish symphonic metal originators for the earMUSIC label.
The trilogy of albums "Polaris", "Elysium" and "Nemesis” were released close to each other as the consequence of the renewed creative energy the band gained following the arrival of new members to support the historical members Kotipelto, Johansson and Michael. The previous three albums by Stratovarius showcased the many talents of guitarist Mattias Kupianen (prolific songwriter and producer of all the albums, including "Eternal”), virtuoso bass player Lauri Porra and, on the third of the three, the young talent Rolf Pilve, one of the best drummer of his generation who had to replace Jörg Michael after the latter decided to move into a new role in Stratovarius management.
The most recent album "Nemesis” included the single "Unbreakable", which became one of the most streamed songs ever released by Stratovarius.
Kotipelto and Johansson proudly carry the torch of the glorious Stratovarius tradition, but now many fans of the band consider the current line-up "classic Stratovarius”. The new album “Eternal” has been the longest album in the making from the band.

"Since ‘Polaris’ we have released a new studio album pretty much every two years” - reflects Jens Johansson – “but after ‘Nemesis’, we all decided to take a little bit of time off after we finished the world tour. Now we're all tanned and rested and it's about f***ing time to get back into the saddle. Everybody has been busy the last few months writing lots of new songs, and only the best has been recorded for ‘Eternal’”.

Song details and formats (including a limited deluxe edition as in the Stratovarius tradition) will be revealed in the next weeks as well as details for a tour in Finland.
In rest of the World, the first shows in support of "Eternal" are as follows:

Except I'm so sure these two are bound to be leaps and miles better than Gather the Faithful and Polaris

Cain's Offering and Stratovarius in the same year!
It's a damn good year, I'll say
But seriously...Stratovarius needs to come to America.

that is awesome news!

what I dont get is why stratovarius does this little game of just announcing the album without warming up the audience , is kind of a shock news strategy , the opposite being the nightwish strategy where we get like 15th trailers of a upcoming album
in any case, you know im buying it *

*when it gets here

I'll wager $200 all of those don't happen.

Make it $20 and you're on.

I kinda like the mystery. Stratovarius hasn't put out a bad album in 20 years (the self-titled is still a good album, just disjointed and different by Stratovarius standards) so I'm content with waiting. I hope more info arrives very soon though. Would love to see a tracklist and artwork.

Agreed. I listen to the S/T from time to time, it's actually got some great songs! Last three are among my favorites of the whole discography. It's just not a strato-esque album.

That said, both Timos could shit in an CD case and I'll buy it at the price of a double album.

I also like it very much. Didn't really care about it some years ago, but now I would say it's far from the "worst" Strato album.

It really isn't that bad in hindsight. Sure, it lacks some of the typical Stratovarius elements, but I think looking back on it 10 years later it's probably much easier to cut it some slack.

Fight!!!, Maniac Dance, Gypsy In Me, United... they're all great songs. Different, but familiar. Simplistic, but enough. Powerful. It's easy to say it's a weak album, but after following the quadrology of Episode, Visions, Destiny, and Infinite, the band was bound to miss a step eventually.

... which has me a little concerned about Eternal, since Polaris, Elysium, and Nemesis were home runs. Fuck me sideways, I understand how Rush fans feel about Rush now. Stratovarius, to me, is the best fucking metal band of all time. There's a part of me already excited for what's after Eternal, for crying out loud.

... or that might have been the the whiskey. The whiskey in meeee.

Tolkki was becoming an ass during the Elements era though. We don't see Matias or anyone monopolizing the band, everyone's really happy with each other!

I do hope the album contains a signature Stratovarius power metal jam like Father Time/Will The Sun Rise/Black Diamond. An very straightforward power metal song.

What are the odds Rolf gets a songwriting credit? Lassila wrote stuff in his day whereas Jorg stuck to his own instrument. Interesting to see if we can get a Rolf-song!

If I'm to be entirely honest about this one... one of the things that makes me love the new Stratovarius so much, is that they are able to make power metal that is PRECISELY not that.

Sounds much more fresh, much more creative and separates them from every other band making the exact same kind of 90's Tolkki dum-dum-dum-dum-dum-dum double bass power metal.

Songs like Infernal Maze, Deep Unknown, Elysium, Abandon, Out of the Fog, Nemesis and some more sound yes, like Power Metal, but like 2010's metal.

I wouldn't mind straight-forward power metal in the new record, but I don't think that should be the focus, since the new music Matias, Lauri and Jens are comming up with is just more interesting at for this time. Even Kotipelto tracks feel in a different step than your usual Seeds of Sorrow, and I think that's a good song. This is the sign of good evolution. I wouldn't want Strato to be 2008 DragonForce, where every album and every track was the same again and again...

I don't know, I may be alone in this one, but I don't particularly miss what they used to do with Tolkki. Firstly, because this new music is kind of their new identity, and secondly because well... the Tolkki-esque songs aren't going anywhere, and the best examples of that kind of music are in their 90's catalog.

The way I see it, if they feel like making one of the straight forward metal songs, then it's fine. But if they are like "Oh... and we have to do/include one of those" that's what I don't want.
