Still think this one's a hoax though, too many symptoms of different known viruses together. We have "VBS/GWV", "Scrambler" and some random Mickey Mouse shit here. Haven't heard any news so far that such virus would be spreading anywhere else and I don't think anyone would bother just to piss off some european "who are they?" band's anxious fans. Except Jens, but if it really corrupts or destroys data (other than the file itself) it's not so easy to get over with as blowing up a toilet and I think Jens knows it well enough.

If it really only is with Strato MP3s, which i somehow doubt, the band would be the only one with any interest to do this shit, except some really insanely dedicated fan. I'm just very suspicious now because Stratovarius has talked so much about how they hate downloaders before. Yeah I really hope it's a hoax or some other virus or that at least the band had NOTHING to do with this.

Sure you can. Just write a trojan from scratch, make a known illegal file the vector and spread that. The trojan stays inactive until quite a bit of time passes, so any information about the original spreader is long lost.

When it activates it strips itself from the vector file, writes out a small executable "handler" to disk, then encrypts a bunch of random documents, changes their extension, associates this new extension with the "handler", and erases itself from memory. Extremely targeted attack and pretty instant karma. I wouldn't be surprised if there even are virus writing kits available for this purpose. It's not brain surgery.

Holding files ransom by encryption is all the rage in virus and trojan writing nowadays.

What I wonder a little about is the MP3-as-vector aspect. I suppose with Microsoft software anything really is possible, but how would the code even get executed from within an MP3?

MP3 files CANNOT infect your computer with a virus.
Most likely you got infected in either of the two ways:

1. The file name was something like stratofortress.mp3.exe. Your setting may prohibit the .exe (the real extension) from showing up in the file name, or you ignored it. the .mp3 does not symbolize the file format, it is simply part of the name.

2. This virus came from p2p junk, not from directly downloading the mp3 itself.

1) You were downloading music illegally
2) Mp3's don’t give you viruses
3) Your a retard for not scanning
4) This is likely not the only thing you downloaded so how do you know what gave you the virus.
5) You are Trolling and being a total moron when clearly the one at fault is you.
6) You got what you deserved for downloading illegally. Its better for you to have lost files then a $500 000 fine and possible jail time for downloading music illegally.
7) Lastly no one cares about it if you whine and blame Strato for doing this when you have no proof that they had anything to do with it. Clearly if your stupid enough to get a virus from a downloaded file then you deserve to get your comp @^#^#$ up.

Maybe it is a Finnish goverment secret program to annoy illegal downloaders.
You guy have no idea what downloading is doing for the entire music field.
Very soon, you´ll see even the rest of the most big record companies merging. No risks will be made, they will release only what they know will sell 100%ly and not take any risks.
I stand here with the same attitude than before, IF you download, then at least buy the record please. We are not Metallica and it will seriously harm us. Do as you feel what is right, that´s all I can say.
We are still shocked and pissed of that this happened so early.
But what can you do? Nothing. We trust our fans though.
What we ca do this time is to trace who did this, because the cd´s were watermarked and bear identification of which journalist it was.

I feel it's a bit untactful for people to be discussing pirate downloads on the forum of the band they are pirating. Especially in this context, because there really is no gray area here. Regardless of whether they are whining about a virus or getting in their two-bit review before anyone else does, it's really in quite bad taste.
