Now that would be something ... Liimatainen could have some personality problems. Does anyone really know why he is out of Sonata Arctica, the story sounds so strange, with the finnish army, or was it alcohol, or was it something else?

In my opinion man like Jens Johansson needs someone up to his standards for some intense solo-duelling. :P

Unless the guitarist is Tuomas Wäinölä, you can officially call me "stupid retard".

I wouldn't mind if it was Wäinölä. Not after hearing the solo of Sleep Well. 8)

I was going to say Yngwie Malmsteen but as i thought about that, i don't think i could see him getting along with the band for some reason. Probably an ego thing?

I've heard of this Tavastia club afew times before, is it big?

Jani Liimataimen for sure. Jens and Jani together would renew my faith in metal! (remember winterheart's guild? What an amazing duo!)

Agree with Nefertari, but why not Staffan Stråhlman?

After all, he was the 1st guitar player in Stratovarius before Timo Tolkki!

And Stratovarius first was bassist John Vihervä, drummer and singer Tuomo Lassila, and guitarist Staffan Stråhlman. They were the founders of Stratovarius in 1984, before Timo Tolkki replaces Staffan Stråhlman.

And whatever who is the owner of the band, in 1984 (it was not Timo Tolkki) we've always Timo Kotipelto, Jens Johansson, Jörg Michaël and Lauri Porra. I'm sure when things will be clearest, we'll have some new great compos from Stratovarius. :)

Otherwise, why not also a great french guitar player called Cyril Leppizzera? :D

Staffan quit because he didn't want to tour.

No one has mentioned my favourite guitar player (he's my favourite along with Malmsteen... Yes, I know Malmsteen has a huge ego, but I'm talking about his playing, not his personality). Anyways, my other favourite is the Japanese version of Malmsteen. He's as good as Malmsteen (and even moves like him on stage) but without the ego, and his band actually feels like a band.... Give it up for Norifumi Shima of Concerto Moon!! :headbang:
Btw, Concerto Moon's keyboardist (Toshiyuki Koike) is also amazing.

Live video of Shima with Concerto Moon (in this video you'll see the band's old singer, which was better than the one they have now):

This one's from Shima's instructional video:

NAAAAH!
he's way to boring live! he uses the same scales
not to disrespect you of course, you had a point on that but, face it this way
-if that happens, it will become kotipelto number 2
-his guitar playing, he has certain prowess, but hes not a VIRTUOSO! and virtuosos is what they need
-his guitar solos/ improvisations are always the same ( penthatonic/major/minor Phyrgian)
hes good but not suitable for strato

Here's a relatively unknown, but talented guitarist-

J.R. Blackmore

Jurgen Richard Blackmore- his father, of course, needs no introduction.

Check out the track "Total Eclipse" on his Myspace page- it's an instrumental, but it definitely rocks!

I think that nobody can replace TT, 'cause he always been the main writters of the songs...

That's sad...

I'm with you, Kotipelto, Michael, Porra and Johansson :)

Yeah, CM are a great band. I'm proud of our label-mates :D

Shima is an amazing guitar player, but I don't know if he'd want to leave Japan and leave CM behind...

As a songwriter Tolkki probably can't be replaced. It is hard to imagine someone composing song that could se easily be identified as strato-songs. As a guitar player he however be replaced. There are many guitarrists out there who are talented enough to learn to play strato songs and solos with decent amount of practice.

New guitar player

Post by Rantanen » Sat May 17, 2008 8:37 pm

The new guitarist could be someone relatively unknown...it could be a big surprise. TT is not easy to replace. He was the soulof Stratovarius IMO, and Kotipelto is, maybe, the balls of Strato. :?

No, no, no. Replacing a fundamental member can't be done. You leave James Hetfield, Steve Harris or Tony Iommi out of the band and the band should change its diapers as well as erase the name.

When AC/DC got Brian Johnsson scream his guts out through sandpaper, that worked. But if Malcolm Young would had been replaced by another, the engine would had failed.

Kotipelto is the main songwriter of Kotipelto, I think Johannson would be the main songwriter of Stratovarius, that's big. Jorg Michael is a big part of what makes Stratovarius, well, Stratovarius. I used to be a fan of his drumming on self titled, I still am to an extent, but Strato's album needs double bass drum more than anything needs anything else right now.
Timo Tolkki wants to "Tribute" Visions and Episode, which is fine, because he wrote almost all of Visions, and a good amount of Episode. But what Stratovarius needs to show RR is that there can only be one, (Jens Johannson). But seriously, if Timo comes out with a genius record, then it's likely a lot of Stratovarius fans will shift over to RR, the band needs to come out swinging with a keyboard shredding, double bass pedal thumping, epic, album that shows people that the old music wasn't all because of Timo.
Musically Stratovarius gave everything to this type of music and they have a great legacy of albums. There's some massive, pompous songs there with many things going on. With good headphones, even old fans sometimes get to hear new things from old songs.

I took a long pause from the band's music and now it sounds as fresh as it did in 1994.

As a sidenote, I grew out of the double bass drumming. It just irritates me for some reason.
