Well, that was a bit alarming at first, but apparently it wasn't so bad. From HS-Music:

Finnish metal band Stratovarius gig in Edmonton ended in flames.

The band’s gig in Edmonton was in Starlite Room-club. During the last song “the Black Diamond” singer Timo Kotipelto noticed that the ceiling mounted PA speaker was on fire.
Probably the speaker was overheated.
- Everything went well in the circumstances, and no one was hurt. A fire was quickly switched off, Kotipelto said.

Well, Stratos music is always hot! :headbang:

Sorry for the lame joke attempt.
Seriously, glad to hear it was not serious and that all is ok, and hope everyone did enjoy the show there!

I've seen the video of how quickly the Station fire spread, many times.

I also played a gig once with Kotipelto at the Cromañon in Buenos Aires, a few months before that burned down.

Venue fires are the stuff of nightmares. The club yesterday had good fire exits (two of them), smoke detectors, and (I think) sprinklers installed, things happened abit too quickly to notice.

I dom't think there was a high probability of a disaster to happen, but you just never know. If you watch the Station video you know what I am talking about. People are slow to react and fire can behave in very unpredictable ways.

I'm extremely happy nobody was hurt. Well, I actually hurt my head pretty badly when jumping down from the stage. I wish I could say that I was heroically saving a bag of kittens or babies or something from a fiery death, but in reality, once I saw some guy with an extinguisher and the crowd leaving in a calm and orderly fashion, I just went back on stage to fetch my eyeglasses and smashed my head into a wall by accident.... :)

So yeah, the band rocked so hard that the PA caught on fire. And there was some real headbanging. Good thing Firewind weren't opening. Bada bish. *crickets*
Jens.

But yeah a fire at an enclosed venue is about as bad as something can get. Glad everyone's ok, and hope the head is feeling better!

Well I know the fire is the main attraction of the video, but that was an awesome keyboard solo at the start :D TnG ftw!

Lol. It was really no big deal. To be honest the fire was pretty much going out on its own by the time we completely exited. Nobody panicked at all. There wasn't really much stuff that could catch fire up there so I was never really concerned...

Still, the FD had to come down just to check it out...

Ya, that's why it wasn't a huge deal. I was familiar with their setlist so my first reaction (and everyones reactions) was "GREAT TIMING".

Sort of sucks that the band wasn't able to do Thank You and Good Byes Though...

Oh Jens, I hope your head will not hurt anymore. I think that yes you would have heroically saved them who would have been left in the lurch when it would have been necessary.

Fortunately, the guardian angels were awake.

Have a safe tour! :)

I prefer missing the "thank you good bye" and having un-incinerated fans..

Yes, fortunately it was the last song. But it also allowed us to talk about it a bit on the bus later with the crew. Even if it was the first song I think the best thing to do would be for everyone to leave. You just don't know. You can always continue the concert later if it's safe. Or some other day.

NIST re-creation of the Station fire in a controlled environment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxiOXZ55hbc

Notice how 90 seconds was all the time it took.

Some actual footage:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQcvFKHsz6Q

Don't click the latter link unless you know you can stomach watching actual footage of 100 people being burned and/or gassed to death.

My take on it is that if something at a gig is burning, which looks like it should not be burning, everybody should get the fuck out. IMMEDIATELY. Whether it's in the last song or during the first note ...

It was the right decision. You can't be waiting there to see what happens. Cmon we are talking about your life. It's better like that, concert cancelled.

Well, it was just a moment of panic, now it's all over. :)

What a collection of pegleg jokes already in this thread.

I have nothing to add really, so I post with no meaning. I'm happy no-one got hurt and the actual people with the mic reacted quickly and told people to leave the venue without panic. It's really important any conversion hysteria is avoided in these kind of stuff; it's essential for everyone to get out safe, in time. Fortunately this wasn't bad anyway and there were extinguishers ready. Nicely done!

I liked how Jens played with the crowd in the beginning. I thought on many occasions that the song was about to start, but nah. :) They also do this in the at of the songs, that classical trademark of theirs: doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo, doo-doo-doo-doo... *ending*. Nope. *ending*. Nope. *ending* stuff. :D I'm very much into this kind of lenghtening the end, if you will. :)

Saw that right after it happened and it's some of the most disturbing footage I've ever seen. No way can I watch it again. I was suppose to be at the show at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park a couple nights before the Station show, but it ended up being on Valentine's day and I decided to stay home with the hubby. Apparently they used the pyros that night too, but only briefly since the club management stopped it immediately. I'd have been out the door as soon as the first one went off.

No show is worth taking even a slight risk with fire. Actually, the video of the Edmonton show was more alarming than it sounded. Glad everyone acted quickly and calmly.

Well, you actually saved one of the most person in the universe, yourself, so that was heroic in itself!

Always knew Black Diamond was one of the few song thzt could really creat a true fire!

Well, Playing with Fire and you continue playing alongside it would have been pretty fun too Infernovarius! :D But as Jens said, it's better people leave immediatly and calmly!
