I don't know how it is in other countries, but in USA we have unemployment compensation---we can draw about half our ususal salary for up to 6 months, but we have to be actively hunting another job. Still, that little check every week helps so much--it keeps the bills paid&gas in the car&bread and beans on the table!
I am hoping I can hold on to my pissy little job for as long as I can--it may be summer, fall or whenever but almost certainly by the end of the year. :(
I am just thankful I have a job even if it is just 20 hours a week. These days everyone I know is on a strict budget&staying home more because of gas prices, and the general slumping economy. It's hard to be a jolly person on go all the time now. :(

6 months ???? Wow, that's really nothing compared to France : here, if you become an unemployed, you can still get 80% of your last salary... during 18 months!!! And the job services don't really care of the job seekers, they just control them every 6 months. control = "hi, so are you still looking for a position in that domain? Are your searches doing fine? Nice, so, we wish you good luck" and then, they leave you alone for the next 6 months. The situation is so different in many other european countries like England, for ex. Not surprising that the unemployment rare is that high in France. Now the french governement is trying to change that, and wants to have strict controls on job seekers, but of course, people are not happy (a half-dozen of job offices in here have been burned down during the last few months, ah what a stupid country...)

My heart goes out to you Man. I've had it happen to me before and it thouroughly sucks! It's like someone just rips the rug right out from underneath you.

I have $5,000 saved up in a separate savings account. I call this my "OH SHIT" account. I use this money only in the case of an "OH SHIT" moment. Like getting the axe at work, or getting an emergency car repair.

If the bottom ever dropped out on me in my job right now, I would enroll in culinary school, move back down to Ft.Myers, and apprentice under my father who is a chef. Actually he is a phenominal chef, and we have already discussed this option.

I hope things start going well for you again. It sounds like they used a bullshit excuse to get rid of you too. That shit just flat out sucks. I would rather just be told they are downsizing, and I'm getting laid off. The attack on integrity would enrage me.

What Jester said is why I think you should fight it tooth and nail, every step of the way. Not go down without a fight, if possible bring them down with you and harm their reputation for unfair practices.

htc, I am really sorry to hear you lost your job. But I have a question, does everyone take sandwiches without paying for them and eat them? If so you definately have a good case against the company. If the sandwiches are free then they had no right to fire you. If the sandwiches aren't free and you took one, then I am afraid this is theft and they do have the right to fire you. You do not have a case in this situation.

Where did you get those numbers from for the unemployment rates? I am very curious. The chart I found was much different. The highest rate was in Mississippi at 9.9%. The next highest is in South Carolina at 7%, and the rest of the states are at 6% or less. Alabama is only at 3.5%. Here is a list state by state for unemployment rate.

http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/ ... mployment/

Also here you can find out more, it is only 3.5%

I didn't leave it late! I was phoning them every day, the lady there had to speak to the Director, i phoned every day twice, and finally today she speaks to him.

I really don't know what to do... I cannot find better job that I have, and my friends' salary is three times less then mine. I just don't know what to do... My boss didn't dismiss me yet but she said very clearly that she is going to do it soon... Additionally I need to study and to have practice... I don't know what to do...

And so I don't know how often I'll come here now, I had free Internet on my job place but it's very expensive to have it at home... I'm fucking upset, I need money to repay... Oh I just don't know what to do now....

I hate to see anyone lose their job, for whatever reason. It's always a stressful thing, but part of life.

After nearly six years of service, I voluntarily resigned my position as network/security administrator at an accounting firm early last year to start a new business. The owner/founder of the company asked me for an eight week notice (two weeks is the norm here in the USA), since we were in the middle of tax season. The owner and I actually got on very well, but my immediate supervisor was the actual problem, and the reason why I left.

I didn't have to work out an eight week notice, but I did it, despite the fact that I certainly was not obligated. Even though the last eight weeks were extremely difficult, in the political sense,I was busy right up till the last minute!

Things did not work out with my new business partner, and I then got left with a pile of debt and taxes. However, since I've gone "solo", things are much, much better!

The owner of my former employer has sent me some new clients, and even calls me to do upgrades/repairs on his home network, even though he has IT staff that can do it for him.

I also received calls from other directors (partners) in the firm, to repair their home PC' and networks. This is something I did during my tenure that my counterparts would not do. While on service calls, it did not take long to get unfavorable reports about problems that were occuring, and one director paid me a very nice compliment when she said, "Let's put it this way, your technical expertise is sorely missed."

I've learned a very important maxim in general business "Never, I repeat never- burn your bridges."
Today's enemies could, believe it or not, end up becoming tomorrow's allies. Striking back at a former employer may give you a "feel good" for a brief period, but the best advice I can give is to sit back, and let your former bosses and/or co-workers screw up- and they will. "Walking the plank", so to speak, can happen to anyone, and at anytime. There are plenty of CEO's/Presidents in US companies that were not only fired, but many are on trial for corruption, thanks to NY Attorney General Elliot Spitzer, as well as the office of the US Attorney General!

Some companies are so bad that you really don't have to do anything when you leave, just sit back, watch, wait, and then laugh when you hear about what's going on at the office you were better off leaving to begin with!!

NeonVomit, the reason is that my boss just don't like me because of the fact that I'm daugther of one of directors of the plant where I work. I have a big salary and she is angry. Everything is simple.

So your boss is simply jealous?
But if you're the daughter of one of these directors, she should not fire you like that i guess...Strange.
