Do you consider people you meet on the internet friends?

Post by stratobabius » Thu Feb 16, 2006 11:42 pm

I'd like to know your opinions about this...
I was thinking about people you meet on the forums and msn and similar programmes.I don't trust chat pages, so just say your thoughts about people you meet everywhere EXCEPT chat pages...
Yes or no, and a bit of comment please...

Yes.
I trust my friends from forum and MSN. They're friendly and I like to speak with people, especially from other countrys.

A couple of years ago, I would have answered "yes" with no doubt, but now I'm not so sure. Internet is internet. I have been stabbed in my back many times by some internet pals so now I'm extremely careful. It's so easy to fake yourself through internet.
I think the only way to know someone for real is when you meet him / her in real life (and also to have an arguee with this person).
That's one reason why I don't use MSN or other IM so much now.
It's nice to do sometimes, but too much is too much.

Still, there are some fellows that I like and respect a LOT, like DawnIsHere, Stragovarius, Christiane or CelineKotipelto, to name a few. Even if I have never met them in real (yet), I know I can trust them, and they know they can trust me as well.

Indeed! The best way is to meet the persons in real life, and not only one time.
I think that Sincerity and Respect are also important between friends.

I don't use internet since a long time (just since 2 years ago), and i've already met on forums, some hyprocrites too...so i'm also very carefully too now. I know with who i talk in general.

Well, I'd say so, but that is because I speake with them and get along, but then again I do not really trust anyone completely but that is not a real requirement to become pals

It depends. If I talk to them on MSN on a regular basis for long enough, I might develop some small trust for them.

But it will only be sealed by meeting in real life. I will never full trust anyone I've communicated with only on the internet.

I have a Counter Strike Clan(team) Most are recruited on line, some were friends before in real life, we have lan gaming sessions lots with some of the older memebers(we've been going since 1999) A few even came to my engagement party a few years back. Also three of us UK boys went over to one of the boys from sweden for a holiday, we all become real good friends. :) Other than that though, the only people i've met are from an alternative swansea(my home town) just seen them out and about in the local rock pubs/clubs, said hi an all that but not friends with any.

Well, I guess yes.

In my life "real" life I have friend but older than me, I don't much friends of my age.

In internet I found people very difference and they are my friends...so, that answer this topic in the moment.

Aquaintances, I guess, more than friends. Knowing someone in real life&spending time with them I think carries more weight. And, I've learned not to trust people I have never meet personally---OTOH there are people here that I do trust to a great degree! You have to trust others to be yourself. If you feel you are being judged&scrutinized&have to measure up, there is no way trust can develop. And no way you can let yourself be the true you! But, forums are meant to be fun&not taken so serious, and this is one of the best forums I have ever been on in terms of people getting along&having fun together.

Mostly yes, but you never can be 100 % sure of all ppl you got to know online. But I think you start to doubt the ones which seems not so "innocent" and not so trustable just when time goes. And using MSN can relieve more about the ppl of course.

Well... There are some really nice guys and gals around here and on other forums, but I use the term "friend" exclusively for people I know in real life. At least I never felt that close to someone I only "met" on the web yet...

Of course I consider people on MSN and forums as friends. I met people who became real friends of mine thanks to StratoForum. :) And you are all so funny and kind! You're all real friends. 8)
Toutes choses étant égales, par ailleurs, la solution la plus simple est toujours la meilleure.

I use MSN but to talk with my actual friends. To be honest, it's boring to chat with people you don't know.

hmmm...let's see...from internet I talk with like 3 people in MSN? One of them I love as a friend inconditionally, and that is Blindmaiden.

But I don't consider people from internet friends. Just Blindmaiden (Carlos) and MetalMarianne who I have met. And PainlessCry as well, but I haven't talked with her in some time. :?

@Lilith, I have been wondering about Painless_Cry as well ??? It's none of my business, but for a long time she has been gone&she was a VERY active(and very nice)poster here. I hope all is OK with her.
Well, maybe she is very busy and having a full, active life or her PC may be down ??? I hope that is the case&nothing happened---she is missed.

Most people I talk with, I have either met with, or have something in common... It depends on luck though, if the person on the other end of the line is worth speaking to. Hopefully, I think I have found interesting people to chat with...

I guess yes, I talk with several people of both forums, Koti's and Stratovarius's, and because of all the things we tell each other, I consider them my friends. I guess if some day we meet, I will feel that we've never met through internet, hehe! I feel really close to them. :)

I consider them as fellows. You need to meet as well irl, not just talk over the Internet.

About Painless_Cry: she was not at home, or is she still not? Dunno. But I'm sure, she will come back to the forum soon.

I remember I've seen her a few times with mobile status. As BP says, she must be out of her home. :)

Also, where is MafiaBoy? i'm kinda worried about him even though i never really had much interaction with him specifically.

@ topic: normally no, i wouldn't really consider Internet People to be real friends, more like... Internet Friends! Of course, like in all areas of life, there are exceptions to the rule.... so I have some real friends that I made by chance on the internet... most of whom would come from the StratoForum :D
I don't use the internet to meet friends, but if people i meet become friends, well then that's okay.
Aside from some kids here on the forum, i've found bandmates over the internet, which is really useful, but most of those dont' turn into friends, so... yeah that's more of a networking thing i guess!

You can find Mafiaboy on Hymn to Life forum, and chat: irc.icq.com #hymn_to_life_community (there's a chat applet on tolkki.com). He's always there.
