Problems on the StratoForum...

Post by MetalAngel » Thu Apr 27, 2006 9:31 pm

Hello to all! :)

I noticed for some weeks that the StratoForum had some troubles with DataBase. I don't know exactly what is exactly the problems so could someone explain me? Is it the cause of some hackers or real spammers? :(

It has happened many times in the past yet. Earlier, when there were problems here, the Tolkki forum was down, too, but that has changed now..
But as long as Jens is fixing the problems, it's not a big problem.

That stupid problem has happened so many times and it's very usually in this forum, so you don't have to be scared. But of course it's boring that forum goes down so often.

And this seems very strange to me as the thing is that the both Kotipelto.com and Kotipelto.net forums has some problems with some porn-drugs-everythingelse links spamming...StratoForum had some similar problems recently...so, that's why I'm a bit anxious about it.

Hmm, hopefully they can fix it. At least it's really annoying... :?

First off, sorry for making a new thread that's already in existence. Thanks MetaAngel for clarifying that.

I haven't seen any porn/drugs/1337 h4x0ring on here. All I've seen everytime I've tried to access the bookmark that I have to the forum, it always comes up with "PHPbb Can't Connect to Server" message.
Somehow I still have an account...yay...?

We need this forum like junkies need smack. It goes down, and I start sweating... I start feeling bad... I start having anxiety attacks...

Bad to say how easy we can get it. Namely I think losing your life to the net is very simply but getting out of there and getting your life back, that would be a problem. :P

yeah that error message is very annoying...
i'm actually thinking about the song 'vapaus' when i see the blank error page everytime, 'internet addiction is a bad friend, fast connection is the only solution'

talking about this "phpBB : Critical Error, Could not connect to the database " thing, if this error message is true, then it should be the host's problem. nothing to do with the forum itself. i don't think it couldn't connect to the DB because the password in config.php is wrong. if that's the case we will never be able to see the forum, not this "2 days online 2 days down" situation we have now. so it must be something else...either "max_connections" or "max_user_connections" set wrong (which i don't believe is the case either), or something with the database server. But there's one thing i don't understand: on the stratovarius.com index page there's a section showing new posts in the forum, and that part actually works! it CAN connect to the database and get the post list. very strange...

and for those spamming guys and their auto-register robots, see how ppl fight with them: (very inspiring ideas, indeed 8) )

When this forum is down its not a total loss--we have TTs place, Jen's Spamboard, and Koti's forum--its not like we are in a total lurch! :D

But, yeah, even though I don't come online here as much, when its down I somewhat miss it. :)

I don't really see it as an addiction...its the fact that if I want to connect to the forum to communicate with someone, I'd rather just click onto my bookmark that's linked straight to the index of the forum...instead of trying to find a link to a thread, and then communicating.

He chose to keep his forum small so he could keep a good watch on everything, and so people could know each other better.
I was lucky in that I signed up right after it opened, in 2002! :D

A very informal forum.

I just miss that forum when it's down. It's like talking to yourself but it's so fun in meaningless days like today...

I suppose you could email him and ask him to join??? jens@panix.com it seems that sometimes he adds new people? It is kind of a boring-spammy forum though....

I noticed lots of new people have signed up for Jens forum? Whats with that? Or was it just Jens himself testing it out? ??? Because they never posted.
Thats something I do not understand--Why sign up for a forum if you are not going to post--unless you are just keeping an eye on someone, or "meeting" someone there on the sly! :err:

Those are "fake" users. Some bots browse PHPBB forums and use security holes to force registration (technically it's impossible to register since Jens locked it) and create users and topics to do advertissement. (for ex "visit planetbrainshit.ru. We full of stuff make life better PaintShop Via-Gra every thing you need we have, sponsor us - vodka we need"). You can notice that all those members had mentionned a illegal web shop as a homepage. We should have tons of topics like that, but it seems Jens did some routines to prevent that.

I haven't been able to connect to the web machine reliably. Still a fucking hassle. Some fucking router on the way to finland from where I am sitting blocks all traffic except port 80.

The "phpbb unable to connect database" .. can't say what that is exactly. Could be many things.

jens.org is over quota yes. having difficulties to ssh into that thing as well.

Donno, probably some other weird stuff going on, but since my robot machine can't connect and scp the http logs to somewhere useful..
-shrug-

jens.org/forum was always just a test forum and .. not even that since most of the changes I do nowadays I just do directly here with ssh and the mighty microemacs.

carry on..
Jens.
