Friendly Feudalism: The Tibet Myth

An interesting read, I'm amazed at how few people know what Tibet was like before the Chinese came in 1959.

I agree.
chinese government is paying for what they have done in 1959, but i don't totally agree on the term of "chinese came in" or "chinese crack in". as far as i remember, "Dalai Lama" is an honored title the first Dalai Lama got from chinese goverment. it's more like an official appoint.

when talking about culture attack, it hard to blame anyone. chinese themselves are losing their tranditions and unique culture - by the attack of western world, you may say. today in this modern world it's a universal problem of protecting every nation's own oldie-goodies.
one specific reason for the tibetens here: in old days the only way of getting education is to send the kids to the temples. they learn reading, writing and all the religious stuff. the only educated class is the monks, and the family has to pay for it (by donation to the temples). so when the free schools hold by chinese appear everywhere, less people send their kids to the temples to become fully dedicated monks.

i know this kind of things are always more complecated than we think. it's good to be open minded, listen to both sides and have own opinions. none of them is innocent, neither are the medias. i just don't like when people use religious things as political tool. we have had enough of this in middle east, and other places of the world.

Now they get their "flame of shame".

I must also say, IOC-president Rogge is one of the biggest hypocrites ever. When the games were assigned to China, he said this happened only with the goal that human rights situation in China will improve. As we all know, nothing happened. And now Rogge is trying to behave like this criteria never existed, and everything is fine.

Based on what I've read the situation is actually worse, now that the police have started to 'clean up' Beijing.
