Looking for some new music

Post by Balu » Tue Sep 21, 2010 6:04 pm

Hey guys!
I'm looking for some new music, as I got bored of the stuff I listen to. So what I'm looking for is anything quality, preferably metal (so no electronic crap : D), but within that, anything. Also, I'd prefer lesser-known bands, as I've looked through everything possible, asked friends, looked on last.fm etc.

Anything?

Listening to the studio album Moving Target, I think it's that particular live song as the first track. They just recorded the song off the fly and never did a studio version of it? :D

Anyhow, that is some seriously super fucking awesome shit; possibly the best live video I know. :I D.C. Cooper has a huuuuuge voice!

For Balu: I hope there will be at least a couple of new names here. They're almost all power metal or closely related, and they're somewhat close to priority order if you ask me. :D

Seventh Wonder, Grave Digger, Wuthering Heights, Thunderstone, Freedom Call, Virgin Steele, Running Wild, Axel Rudi Pell, Domine, Burning in Hell, Beyond Twilight, Mägo de Oz, Heaven's Gate, Shadow Gallery, Edenbridge, Labÿrinth, Trick or Treat, Nikolo Kotzev, Impellitteri, Savage Circus, Dreamtale, Riot, At Vance, Serenity, Silent Force, Stone (Finnish),Vision Divine, Threshold, Frameshift, Angel Witch, Mundanus Imperium, Manticora, Heavenly, Theocracy, Ilium, Tribuzy, van Canto.

Why would that be a problem?

Intiaani: I know the most of them, but there are some unknown ones that seem great. Thanks!

Since you're an avid fan of metal music (I guess) there's probably not that much left for you to discover of the same.

Metal has lots of subgenres with giant differences between them (for example symphonic metal and brutal death metal are both metal, but have almost nothing in common), so there is still much to discover within genre. Outside of it, I can't find any genre that has this much quality music (except of course classical music, but that is different), and even though I love some jazz, jazz-fusion, rock or even ambient (mainly Townsend's stuff, that's good : D), I can't say I love the whole or even half of the genre.
I said no electronic music, because, 99% of it is simply far too simple, meaningless and commercional, so it isn't enjoyable at all.

Oh, OK, here's some good death metal:

I use the term electronic music because it is quite broad, and I can't name many styles of them (as I don't consider them any good), but it includes the various subgenres of techno, trance etc.

Electronic music is as broad a category as metal. Lots of awesome and innovative stuff to discover. But I guess one person can't dig all the stuff out there. I'm not a huge fan of classical music.

Here's one cool Finnish two piece band:

Actually I'm quite sure that electronic music isn't as broad a genre as metal. Metal leaves a lot of freedom to musicians (just look at some avant-garde metal bands), while electronic music gives less.

Actually, Electronic music is probably more broad a genre. It's the only thing that is arguably "Bigger" than metal right now.

Electronic music is not really even a 'genre' - it's just a way of creating music.

I mean, this is considered electronic music (1960)

<object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aNt6a5xFOnE?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aNt6a5xFOnE?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>

So, uh, yeah you basically have this guy to blame if you hate electronic music :D

Exactly. That's a better way of putting it. From wikipedia:
Electronic music is music that employs electronic musical instruments and electronic music technology in its production. In general a distinction can be made between sound produced using electromechanical means and that produced using electronic technology. Examples of electromechanical sound producing devices include the telharmonium, Hammond organ, and the electric guitar. Purely electronic sound production can be achieved using devices such as the Theremin, sound synthesizer, and computer.

Some electronic music for you to consider (well, goth electronic music):
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/SVNjx4k8mWk?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/SVNjx4k8mWk?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>
<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZODMaH7R3Es?fs ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ZODMaH7R3Es?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

This one is one of my favorite songs from all genres:

And some hard-hitting EBM:

You asked for new music, I gave you something very different to consider, like entire new direction. It's obvious you don't know much about electronic music, so I thought it might be useful to suggest you something I personally like very much.

Well, while this is true, I pointed out that I don't want anything electronic, because even if I don't know much about it, I hated every piece I ever heard. It is simply... annoying.

What's wrong with 'electronic crap' as you call it? I love most metal but I also really like Röksopp, Dead or Alive, Ladytron etc. And yes, I even like Lady GaGa. I would never compare it with metal because metal and electronica are two musical styles with completely different goals. Metal is music with meaningful lyrics most of the time. While electronica is there to make you dance and have a good time. I love it all! :P

Well that's a good reason. :)

I do know a few bands I like:

Conception.
Almah
Ayreon
Brother Firetribe
Dreamscape
Frost* (yes that * thing is really part of their bandname)
Guilt Machine
Rick Wakeman (I think you should listen to his album called 'Out There')
Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Unitopia

We all need saccharine music. I suggest John Cage:

Well, dancing is one of the reactions to electronic music, just like headbanging and pogoing is the reaction to metal. But some of the bands the videos of which I put here have good lyrics. For example, Cruxshadows' Winterborn has lyrics that can make a fine power metal song. Hocico, Suicide Commando and such have lyrics not far from thrash or death metal lyrics ...

But to each his own. If you find something good, post it here.

Accidentally saw these guys live (long story), pretty good show as it turned out. Not the sort of thing I'd listen to at home, but a hell of a lot better than 90% of club music!

WHY DOES THE VIDEO GO FOR 9'23 WHEN IT ONLY LASTS 4'33???!?!

John Cage infuriates me. I won't take away from the fact that he was a gifted and prolific composer (and a pretty damn good pianist too), but the psuedo-intellectual bullshit he created to surround and validate some of the other crap he created was taken up by hoards of talentless buffoons who used it (and still do) as a replacement for any semblance of skill or meaning in their work. He's like the Hunter S Thompson of 20th century music; produced some great stuff, but sadly inspired lots of people who have no ability to contribute to believe that they could if they just imitated their heroes.

I love John Cage. When you have nothing to listen to you can pretend you're listening to one of his compositions, then everything seems to have a structure. It's really easy:
