Cardinal Bergolio from Argentina. Any thoughts?

Well, it's the third pope in a row that is not from Italy. That's is something.

No connection to child abuse scandal, certainly among the more moderate leaning liberal cardinals, very passionate about ministry to the poor and disenfranchised, academic background, Latin American, seems like a very solid choice really. I'm not Catholic myself, but I do respect the institution, and were not for a few major theological divides. The papacy is certainly a legitimate institution, as it is the throne of St. Peter, the rock on which the church is built, however I believe the status should be as first among equals, rather than something above that, as well as transubstantiation, while not as crazy as some believe, (Substance and actual matter are very, very different ideas), and then some smaller stuff, mostly just giving smaller church bodies a bit more freedom.

Tsk, don't look at me. I nominated Kakko for president of the world... never happened.

Only one Argentine is sacred enough to be Pope, having carried out several miracles already.

Of course, the Daily Mail, a reliable source of news if there ever was one

Hehe, I think we discussed the quality of British tabloids some time ago. I don't actually think Falklands is going under new rule any time soon (even if God Wills It), especially after some 99% of its residents voted for British rule just recently.

The new Pope has a vague resemblance to Ross Perot. :err: Yeah, seriously he seems more liberal than popes past, and he did come to New York during 9/11 to give support to USA. Let's just hope he lives a few years to do some good in the world from his "throne".

I doubt that Berlu ever attended seminary, which is a prerequisite for priesthood.
