+1, "The Glass Prision" is along with "Hot For Teacher" by Van Halen, one of the songs with the best intro in the whole hard rock/heavy metal history!rikkertje wrote:I'm just addicted to Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence! Perfect album.

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
I'm really not going to call any of those tracks essential for a beginner. Sure, they're great to listen to once you get into the band more, but it's like telling a new stratovarius fan that they really need to hear Fantasia, We Hold the Key, Blind, and Forever Free.ggonza43 wrote:You forgot some of their lightest material, like "Another Day", "Hollow Years", "Solitary Shell", "Forsaken", and some others. But you were right, and sorry about the long list, it's only that I couldn't think of just a few songs to start listening for a beginnerRebel wrote:Again, that is WAY too big of a list. You pretty much just went through and chose half of every album.
Allow me to sum it up in 10 songs
First, let's take the setlist from their latest tour opening for Iron Maiden
As I Am
A Rite of Passage
Home
Constant Motion
Panic Attack
Pull Me Under
(Then we'll add their quintessential song)
Metropolis Pt. I
(The best of the AA Suite)
The Glass Prison
(A song from their best album, Awake)
The Mirror
(And one of the great Dream Theater Epics)
A Change of Seasons
Those ten songs should give you a general idea of whether or not you'll enjoy the band long term.
No, you start them with the entirety of Episode, Against the Wind, Black Diamond, and Phoenix.
And to the other comment, I really wish their newer albums were as innovative and creative as 6DOIT, but at this point, they are somewhere between Power Metal, Heavy Metal, and absurdly long instrumentation sections. It's a real shame.

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
As I said in my first post I am planning to gte the compilation first.
Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
best way to know what you will enjoy is to listen to everything. there are a lot of bands where i really like a couple songs and don't like anything else from them and i would not have found those songs if i had given up after hearing a lot that i did not like.
here are some i like from the band
wither
forsaken
the spirit carries on
through her eyes
finally free
ministry of lost souls
another day
nightmare to remember
solo stuff in concerts such as jordan rudess and john & theresa in live scenes in new york

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
I think that The spirit carries on live performance from Score DVD is one of the best moments I have had in my life seeing a band playing. The part of the solo by Petrucci is just...INCREDIBLY B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. And listening to The Best of times for example and that absolutely emotional solo at the end...damn, it makes me cry.icecab21 wrote:best way to know what you will enjoy is to listen to everything. there are a lot of bands where i really like a couple songs and don't like anything else from them and i would not have found those songs if i had given up after hearing a lot that i did not like.

Well, all the songs you are posting are just incredible, but I would add all the songs that gonza says and all the songs I said. I think there isn't any song I don't like in the whole DT discography. Something similar like happens to me with Strato (In spite of the apparent differences and knowing that there's no band for me like Stratovarius).

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
Are you telling me he doesn't need to listen to "Another Day" and "Hollow Years"?! Those are 2 of the most representative songs they have! Unless he wants some heavy material, and in that case your choice is rightRebel wrote:I'm really not going to call any of those tracks essential for a beginner. Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
I got the compilation s few days ago and it's good stuff.
Comparing to SX for example I would say I am getting mor eof these songs on the first listen but after that they grow slower.
Some of the songs have not yet opened and some have already grown to meet tehir potential.
I will most likely go for Images and Words or/and Metropolis pt.2 next.

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
I heard that Train of thought was written (or even completely made, don't remember..) in just three weeks? Is this true?
Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
Tolkki wrote new era in like, one week. It's easier with a band, once you have creative chemistry going (That and Train of Thought was basically the same song 6 times, with an instrumental and a shorter song thrown in, great songs all of them, and they're incredible live, but, they didn't stretch themselves)Kosmo wrote:I heard that Train of thought was written (or even completely made, don't remember..) in just three weeks? Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
definetely start with Metropolis Part II or 6DoIT. The first one is a masterpiece. ToT is very good but i prefer Octavarium!
Don't start from Falling into infinity. Images and Words is a great one, but they are far away from those times now

Couldn't agree more. I will never, never, never get tired of listening to Metropolis Pt. 2, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence and Octavarium!pneumonia wrote:definetely start with Metropolis Part II or 6DoIT. The first one is a masterpiece. ToT is very good but i prefer Octavarium!

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
Well all I can say is like the whole album. Great stuff especially instrumentally. I have found no weak songs well maybe exept the closer but that is mostly for carrying the story to an end (for now)

Yet as an album very good stuff but I believe it will take some time before I will spend any more money on records for now.
Yet the next one might be Images and Words or maybe Train of Thought since I really really like Endless Sacrifice on the compilation. Or it might be 6DoIT or Octavarium if I find one of them for a good price.

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
I really don't use youtube that much these days.
I just listento samples and trust.
I don't think I have ever done a really bad purchase of a record.

Re: Recommend me Dream Theater
If you are looking for their heaviest material, try "Train Of Thought". Otherwise, if you feel like listening their roots, go and try "Images & Words". And, if you fell like beign impressed by a great masterpiece, listen to "Six Degrees Of Innner Turbulence"
