In Alabama we are freezing when it falls to 30 degrees F. and when it drops to 0 degrees F.(very rare), we think we are entering the New Ice Age! :D

Now I know how that saying, "colder than a well-diggers ass in Finland" came about! :D

Don't worry, it's getting warmer now. The temperatures are not this low in March, normally. :)

Having hangover in -30 is a lot better than having it in +30. Compare that temperature with a humid air and you don't even have to drink to feel like having a hangover. Horrible for a northern guy.

Al Gore’s Personal Energy Use Is His Own “Inconvenient Truth”
Gore’s home uses more than 20 times the national average

tennesseepolicy.org/main/article.php?article_id=367

Hehehe - it looks like Ozone Al has a little bit of explaining to do. Paying out nearly $30,000 USD per year for natural gas and electric utility bills alone sort of negates his Oscar, as far as the PR factor is concerned.

I liked Gore a lot better when our hometown newspaper's cartoonist, (the nationally syndicated) Bruce Plante of the Times/Free-Press, used to caricature him as a 6' foot 2"X4" piece of lumber (sporting a beard). 8)What's even funnier is that Plante, like Gore, is a liberal himself! :)

To suggest that Gore is at least a bit hypocritical is really not too much of a stretch. Moreover, one does have to wonder how much fuel his mini-caravan of GMC Suburbans with Secret Service agents in tow, consumes when the family decides to go out for dinner some evening?

Yep. Everybody has an Achilles Heel(weakness), and God help us when word of what our weakness is falls into the wrong hands to be used against us. In politics, this ploy is actually used to some extent.

I know plenty of good, honest people who theoretically would make fantastic politicians.

But they'd never get into a position to do any good.

Saying that each and every politician are rotten to the core is cynical populist crap. In my humble opinion, of course.

Pericles was good. :)
Seriously, I don't think there've been (few,if any) good ones in the last couple of centuries.
Of course, my knowledge about this is only a bit below the surface, so I guess, that's the regular person's opinion above. :)

I know one personally. It's former Chattanooga mayor, and now U.S. Senator, Bob Corker (R-TN).

corker.senate.gov/About/index.html

Corker is a self-made man, and did a great job as Finance Commissioner for the State of Tennessee, as well as mayor of Chattanooga. He's worth over a hundred million dollars, and at one time was one of the largest property owners (commercial) in the entire state of Tennessee, so he is definitely not doing this job because he needs the money.

He was one of my father's customers in the 70's and 80's, my mom knew him and his wife from church. I used to work for his accountants, and provided by business and IT consulting services for his various companies, and he is a straight shooter.

I had a former classmate that was in France with a church mission group. Mark fell violently ill, and had to be taken to the hospital for emergency surgery.

The French hospital could not accept his father's BlueCross/BlueShield insurance card, and required payment for the emergency surgery in advance. Mark's father called Corker out of desperation, and without hesitation, Corker calmed my friend's father down, and wired the money (thousands of dollars) to him immediately. This happened in the '80's, and long before Corker had ever ran for public office.

You may also want to check Corker's biography, or more specifically the work he did when he founded CNE- Chattanooga Neighborhood Enterprise, which helped many poor people acquire their first homes here in the city. Entire neighborhoods have been built due to CNE, and many of these neighborhoods are actually very nice by almost anyone's standard.

Cool, good to see he's actually done some good. Now that I think of it, there are a few others that I could think of (both here and at home) who are actually good at their jobs, and have achieved admirable things, so perhaps I was a bit too hasty with that statement.

This case sort of raises another question however... are any members of the US senate not millionares? Or for that matter, any member of the upper house of parliament of virtually any developed nation in the world not very rich from before taking office?

Theoretically, anyone can be elected to public office. Right? I'm a peniless student/semi-pro musician, but technically I could run for the National Council (upper house of parliament) back home and I could get elected. I am a legal citizen with a clean record and over the age requirement. Of course, I lack the financial resources (as well as the experience/background) and party links to do this. But isn't the point of a democracy, for any upstanding citizen to have a chance of being in charge? Of course, you need to join a party for all this to happen, and rise through its ranks accordingly. How does one achieve this rise without a lot of cash?

Has anyone ever managed it without being very rich in the first place? I speak of high positions. And this is usually the case in almost any democratic nation. I can't think of any US president (or for that matter, president of Cyprus) who wasn't a bigshot in some company or other. Tassos Papadopoulos (Cyprus President) was/is a senior partner in one of the biggest law firms on the island. So were previous presidents, they were big names in buisiness. How can someone who does not make it big in buisiness, either out of luck or choice (maybe someone wanted to be an artist?) become the head of government of a country?

Food for thought. Again, there are probably exceptions and I'm currently too tired/lazy to search for any, but I've always wondered about this.

Believe it or not, Bill Clinton did not personally have a great deal of money when he got elected. His salaries as Attorney General of Arkansas, and later as governor of Arkansas were not what I would call extravagant by any means. Hillary made a little money at her law firm, but this pales in comparison to the money that Bill is pulling in now with his speaking engagements.

Could someone like you run for elected office? Well of course you could, but you would do well to run and win in local or county type of elections to build a regional reputation before attempting anything at the national level.

Being a musician though, as opposed to an accountant, lawyer, or businessman probably would not help though. Many voters want not only people that come from the business or public service sector, but also people that are honest and can actually demonstrate problem solving skills.

I'm not saying don't run, but isn't it a bit late to switch your major from music to political science or the law? :)

I am not sure about the US Senate, but am pretty sure that the US House of Representatives has some people that are not rich, or at least not rich when they get elected. What happens after those types get elected is a different story.

In Finland we have these silly celebrity runners (rockers, rappers, sportsmen...). And then we have voters that are even sillier, they actually give them their votes! The result is that we have clowns like Tony Halme (you might know him from WWE as Ludvig Borga) in the parliament who call the President lesbian.

Running a country, even as a MP is a serious, serious job. As a voter I require a decent education or a lot of experience before I cast my vote for somebody. Parliaments are not soccer fields.

Interesting, I did not know that. And say what you will about the guy (he's just as much a crook as most other presidents you could mention) but he knows how to give a speech.

I'd sooner quit breathing than quit my studies in music. I was simply using myself as an example! I have no aspirations to run for any sort of elected position. I'd rather keep out of politics altogether and just critisize them from the safety of my anonymity :D

Yeah, what I was getting at is that Clinton was not exactly loaded during his tenure as AG and governor, but he is pulling in some huge numbers ($40 million so far, according to Forbes) for his speaking engagements now. Yep, I think he's a crook, and I also agree that he certainly has a gift for oratory, Southern accent not withstanding.

I understand, and I don't blame you. Being a musician (full time) is difficult, which is why I went into that hellhole known as IT- and it is much easier than trying to make a living off of music. As you mentioned previously, I think that Jens said it best, regarding the challenges of music and actually paying the bills.

Take a look at his Jens' old friend, the late Shawn Lane (who was from Tennessee). He was a monster guitar player, but died essentially penniless. We used to see Shawn with Black Oak Arkansas at a "superclub" known as Paul Gray's PlayLate Club, and at the time, we all thought that he was going to dethrone Van Halen and Yngwie as well! He was really that good.

However, I was trying to give you some hypothetical advice for your proposed candidacy! If you ever need a campaign manager (if you change your mind), just let me know. :)
