Underrated guitar players?

Hi everybody:

Sorry if this is a repeated subject, I looked it up with the search tool, and the closest thing I got was this:

http://forum.stratovarius.com/viewtopic ... sc&start=0

Great thread, but it's not about "guitarists" exactly.

I would like to hear your opinions! No matter the genre: power, heavy, thrash, progressive, death, funk, jazz, classical, cuarteto cordobés, etc. :)

Who is doing the rating?

I think a lot of known guitarists are underrated by some and overrated by others and not rated at all by even more people. I definitely see comments all the time of extremes either way where people get fanatic either way. There are also plenty of guitarists that can play what rated guys play but are unknowns or session musicians and music teachers that have not done the band thing. Everyone has strengths and weakness to their playing and there are so many different areas of guitar playing. It’s not like we have scientific tests or competitions for guitar player, or that everyone would even participate if there were.

However. I think most people don't consider Buckethead the greatest electric guitar player to ever live, and that means he's underrated...

Steven Wilson, although I like him more for his lyrics and vocals, is a very capable guitar player, he has some great stuff on the Coma Divine live album that you don't really hear in the studio, and Normal is one hell of a performance, Ritchie is more underappreciated than underrated, because anyone who knows his work knows what a God he is (he practically invented shredding), I see him snubbed on so many toplists though. Josh Homme is an excellent riff writer, maybe second only to Iommi himself, I'm sure I'm missing some

I dont think Shawn Lane is underrated, he is a master!!!
I have to say Tony Macalpine, that guys is amazing, his first album Edge Of Insanity is a Shred Must. the thing is that he makes his living in the shadows of Steve Vai.

Kecos wrote:I don't think there is one "Greatest guitarist in the world". There are many different styles of guitar, none of which is necessarily better than any other. Sure, Buckethead can shred like crazy, but being incredibly awesome at one thing doesn't make you the greatest in the world.

Andi Kravljaca, who actually sings instead of playing guitar for some reason in Silent Call, is an incredible guitarist.

Piet Sielck and Joachim Kustner in Iron Savior are pretty good guitarists, but I'd say IS is more underrated as a band rather than those two as individual guitarists.

Other than that, I don't think I've listened to a whole lot of bands yet that I think are underrated (other than Silent Call and Iron Savior).
Shredding is by no means his first means of playing, did you watch ANY of those vids?

Buckethead is the most versatile player I've ever heard, Metal, Shred, Funk, Country, Jazz, Progressive, Ambiance, Avant-Garde pure emotional soloing, Rock, you name it.

icecab21. Try to cut the semantics one time and focus on the writer's message behind the determined meanings of the words. Or at least think what the writer would have possibly meant. In addition to avoiding stupid little scism, this also makes staying in topic possible, pretty much.

About some guitarists... Yeah, Buckethead. Frank Zappa, talking about versatile playing. I don't know if he was underrated though. :D

I like Chris Impellitteri myself. He even has/had a sense of style apart from quickness.

I've heard some guitar players praise the Brazilian power metal band Burning in Hell guys. A couple of songs I like very much from them.

He is a mediocre player, you just think he is God because he plays in many styles. I'd rather listen to many players who are only awesome in one genre, than one player who is mediocre in many.

Mediocre in many? He can play any of those styles with the same precision and feel as the masters of that specific genre. He is the master of anything he tries to do.

He is as fast a shredder as anyone alive, and can play extended solos with the same heart wrenching emotion as Eddie Hazel's Maggot Brain, his progressive/jazz fusion work in thanatopsis could impress even the best of the, genre (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhxlUKbOBAI) even his acoustic work is on par with the best. I used to think it was impossible to determine the "Best" of any instrument, Buckethead changed that perception, it's like he has literally, limitless ability, and he's always getting better, even when you think it's impossible.

Well it also seems that you can't accept that Rebel thinks that Buckethead is great.

Anyways i would say Mikko Salovaara, he is by no means amongst the best players in the world but still i think that he and Kiuas as a whole needs more respect.

I gonna have to agree with Rebel buckethead is an AWESOME guitar player the licks of that guy are beyond crazy, also he is very versatile as he pointed out before.

saying that buckethead is mediocre is saying that you could do better.....and there are only a handful of guitar players that could actually make KFChead look bad.

but if you dont like its ok.

FRANK ZAPPA!! I think he is by all means one of a kind guitar player, for me is hard to enjoy and I dont think you listen to him once and get hooked up, It takes several listenings, is that uniqueness what makes him a kind of underground guitar hero.

Not necessarily art, talent.
I do think Buckethead is an incredibly artistic guitarist, but that's subjective, what I'm arguing is that he is the most TALENTED guitarist to ever walk the face of the earth.

Also, what's subjectivity if you can't argue it?

If you want to continue...

He might be a great guitarist, but he does too many albums, and more albums means lower quality albums, so his talent can't shine.

Although I still think he sucks.

So John Zorn and Frank Zappa suck too? Artists should do albums as often as they can create enough quality material for an album. Buckethead's versatility means that he can release 4-5 albums a year without touching on even slightly similar concepts, and then maybe the next year, revisit some ideas while exploring new areas. Part of what makes him so incredible is his limitless creativity, he can improvise an entire album's worth of material, and it will sound incredible because he's just that good.
