hey guy's is there anyone who like Dream Theater here well i sure do

what are your favorite album of DT?
mine are:

Images and Words, Awake, Black Cloud And Silver Linings, Octavarium, Systematic Chaos, A Change Of Seasons, Falling Into Eternity, Scene From A Memory and Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence!!

and the most What the F moment of the band is when Mike Portnoy leave the band i was like Holy crap!!!=(!!

in your keyboard solo's is Jordan Rudess one of your influences? as for me yeah but man he is awesome so as you =D!!

Jens predates Ruddess by about 15 years, so I hope not. Dream Theater stopped trying after Train of Thought, try OSI, they're what Dream Theater could be if they cared about any real prog values.

It doesn't list Ruddess as having a solo record on CD until about 1993.

They have very different styles though, Ruddess relies much more on the tones and the more electronic end of things, while Jens is quite fond of synths, he a much more lead oriented player, and his style in the late 80s, as evident on Malmsteen's Odyssey album. While I'm sure he listens to and enjoys other music, his style hasn't changed terrible much since 1988, and Ruddess wasn't "Notable" until the early 90s, I'm willing to guess that Jens hadn't heard of him until 1994.

I like how A10 almost destroyed the DT forum. It's like almost as if Michaelangelo himself came back to earth to create one more masterpiece, if by 'masterpiece' you mean 'piss off as many people as possible'.

What did he do and why?

I don't hear many influences Rudess from Jens and vice versa, Kevin Moore style was more similar to Jens' playing. Rudess is a good chameleon, he takes from Wright (Octavarium), modern rock bands (Muse) or sometimes from bands like Opeth. He could try IHMO use more modern chords (like Sherinian used to)

My favorite album is Metropolis pt. II. Of course I love more or less all the albums (even Falling Into Infinity), but IHMO Metropolis beats them all. There is my favorite song (Beyond This Life), favorite keyboard solo (Home), guitar solo (The Spirit Carries On) and a real concept album. I think level of this album is hardly reachable now for most bands and even for modern DT. But maybe Portnoy's change will give us something closer to this CD.

From a single album comparison standpoint, Falling Into Infinity is pretty bad, but if I were ranking their albums, I'd actually put it pretty high. Of their "New" albums, I thought Train of Thought was a cool idea, until they did virtually the same thing again with Octavarium, which left me pretty disappointed when they released the same album again with Systematic Chaos, and facepalming when they did THE SAME DAMN THING AGAIN with Black Clouds and Silver Linings.

Even Stratovarius mixed up the formula more than them with Episode-Infinite, and Dream Theater is supposed to be Prog, a genre I absolutely don't tolerate stagnation in. Their best work, by far, is Awake, but I think once Kevin Moore leaves the band, their songwriting starts to flatten considerably, Kevin really pushed and expanded their sound, and Portnoy tried to do the same.

If you look at the conflict, it wasn't that Portnoy was "Kicked out", he left, because he saw the same thing the rest of the fans did, that they had lost their progressive spirit, and that releasing an album every other year had sucked them dry. The band only saw dollar signs and wanted to keep chugging along, they saw the opportunity to be the new world Metallica (Kinda like Tolkki did a few years ago). Unless they get a truly remarkable drummer, I'm not holding out hope, they need to find someone like Gavin Harrison, who can really explore the purpose of the drums, and put on a technically impressive show on a standard drum kit with maybe a few extra toms. I like Portnoy, and I think he was right in this dispute, but fuck all if his drumming didn't get obnoxious in Dream Theater.

"Train Of Thought" was one of their greatest work alongside with "Scenes From A Memory". After that, the band just went commercial and down...Now that I'm thinkig of it, maybe Portnoy did the rigth thing when leaving this guys alone; he knows that the next album they intend to relase will be another "Systematic Black Clouds & Silver Chaotic Octavarium"

Cosmo, you're right and he was responsible for production as well as Petrucci, so he was the main co-leader of their direction.

my favorite keyboardist from DT is kevin moore, he was somewhat bluesy if you will, at the same time he wrote some of the best lyrics in DT history.
I agree that, Train of though was the last good thing of DT, after that they went downhill...I guess mike knew that.

OK, let me get this straight:
If we are talking musically, not only Portnoy but everybody in the band contributed in both albums, so there's no reason to point who's the responsible for the similar sound within each album. About the lyrics, Portnoy only wrote from both albums "Constant Motion", "Repentance", "The Shattered Fortress" and "The Best Of Times". You can discard the ones from the AA suite, the other 2 are the most enjoyable songs from those albums

what do you think they should be doing within the context of the type of song? what is the standard that is being missed here?

why do you have to listen to them as a "prog" band? why not listen to it as "music" without prejudice or expectation? don't you think you could hear it in other ways if you listened with a different purpose ?

If music is made by shitheads, it'll sound like music made by shitheads. Get it? They are shitheads. They always are popular with the people and musicians who say: OMG! LOL! WOW!! THEY ARE SO TALENTED! BEST GUITARIST AND DRUMMER IN TEH WORLD!!! OMG!!! Everytime somebody says that to me, it usually means the band is balls deep in musical diarrhea.

Rebel, how can you say that TCOT is boring? How can you say that solo is boring? Man, have you ever thought that maybe is just that you are completely bored about DT's music? You are saying BC&SL is a bad album and I just can't understand. Of course it's your taste and I understand that what it's funny and emotional for me, can't be for you. Anyway, it tells me everything and that there's no reason to debate. If you can't feel emotion in that but you feel emotion in Porpucine Tree, then I just can think you have something strange against DT, cause for example I see emotion in both parts. I think you are just tired of this band and if some new band offer the same you'll be happy just because you are not tired/used of seeing these people so many years and it's new.

But, regarding MP:
You and gonza are -of course- MP lovers, (I like MP a lot too, one of my fav drummer), but not as a person, where I think it's more or less the same or worst than TT in his maniac Stratodays).
You are stating that he left the band because the comercial oriented of the other guy. I can't believe what I'm reading. Don't you know that it's exactly the opposite? You both are the two first persons I read saying that. I read two DT forums and other music forums and even the MP lovers says the man has lost his mind this time. Seriously, you seem to me like the TT clan around here two years ago.

The best for DT has been the departure of MP. If the next album is a flop, the band will dissapear soon, but now everybody is excited to see what the rest will offer.

I agree that the best album is Awake, but many people think it is another. That's not important. And is not important either if you don't feel emotion in that solo or you don't like BC&SL (incredible, seriously). The most important is that you are just clearly attacking a band with wrong arguments. I just think you are tired of this band, like everybody when is listening to a band so many years and it doesn't matter if the band change or not, it will be the same for you again. You (well many people, me included) would like to hear another SFAM of 6DOIT, or Awake, but If that happens,I'm sure 95% of people will be angry cause DT is using the old formula again showing how uninspired they are.


Regarding the main purpose of the topic. I don't see ANY similitude/influence of whatever between Rudess and Jens and there are another topic about DT (well I think 2 or 3) in this forum where you can debate this.
