Well I wouldnät consider him a major lyricist since he has co-written his Strato-songs with TK who I consider to be one of the best lyricists (Who also happens to have some of the worst lyrics too)
There's some wonderful lyrics, where Matias is involved, like Darkest Hours and Elysium. Personally I don't like Kotipelto's lyrics, what he has done alone. He can make a lot better lyrics with Matias. For me Sleep Well is one of worst lyrics I've ever heard.
Darkest Hours Lyrics were primarily by TK and he wasx included in Elysium as well.
Just because he has written a lot of poor lyrics doesn't mean he couldn't make some of the best too.

Well, no matter who wrote them, but they have very good lyrics. But there's also worse lyrics by Kotipelto, like Sleep Well.

Yes I agree on his poor lyrics. Serenity album had a big bunch of weird lyrics. Still he has some of the best as well. If you look at any classic album of Strato you can see a big bunch of TKs lyrics.

I think Kakko has matured a lot as a lyricist, he had some mind blowingly bad lyrics back in the day but now with Unia and The Days of Grays it's poetry more than anything else.

But my favourite? Probably Mikael Åkerfeldt.

It's true. But some of Kotipelto's lyrics on the solo albums are worse, but there's also very good lyrics by him on Stratovarius albums.

Geoff Tate understands the fine art of self-pity, which is an absolute prerequisite for spiritual growth...

Yes, it's a great record, one of my all-time favourites. The lyrics are a bit overly dramatic perhaps, but that was true for Pink Floyd's The Wall as well. I would consider Operation: Mindcrime one of the greatest achievements in heavy rock to date. I could think of some records that I enjoy equally well, but few are as complete and inspired as this one...

It's not an album for little girls or Justin Bieber fans though. And it sure helps if you've read some Orwell...
