Instrumental Bands and Albums

Recommend some instrumental music to me.
Preferably Prog rock/metal (or classical music and soundtracks)

You're asking for something pretty broad, so I'll recommend a few original film soundtracks to get the ball rolling (not Kubrick-esque usages of existing classical music, which is an artform of its own)

My favourite ever has to be American composer John Corigliano's score to The Red Violin, which he won an Academy Award for. Joshua Bell (one of the finest violin soloists alive) was really involved in the composition of the score, in which the music that the violin plays is actually a plot device, commenting on what's happening in the film, and acts as a unifying voice between the characters across hundreds of years. That's what makes the film so utterly compelling and re-watchable - the music doesn't just add colour to the film, it's an incredibly vital part of the film itself and the story it's trying to tell; not just adding atmosphere, but adding an entire other dimension to the story itself. I personally think it's one of the greatest pinnacles of achievement in the field of film music.

Of a different type, the score that Trevor Jones (mostly) composed for The Last of the Mohicans is also amazing, especially as the film progresses and all the previous themes slowly blend into the climactic final scene. Really epic film, with a really epic score.

Others well worth owning are the score to The Lord of the Rings and the score from Gladiator.

When it comes to classical music, seriously, spend the money and buy the CDs. To my ears, mp3s just don't do it justice. Most older classical works are public domain now so CDs are pretty cheap to buy... there really isn't an excuse not to when you can get something like all of Liszt's Symphonic Poems for 5 euros on Naxos.

you might also look up to Virtuoso by Joe Pass although is a hard stuff to digest if you are not into Jazz so much.

yeah that album is almost a must in guitar shred and instrumentals, there are another good stuff from mo`joe but there is also some bad ones.
I would go on with flying in a blue dream and the extremist by pass everythin` through the super colossal..in my very personal opinion.
