Nightwish - Imaginaerum

I've just listened to the album and must say I enjoyed it much more than Dark Passion Play.
Annette's voice sounds better mingled with the music.
And the orchestrations are pure magic.

Anyone else heard it already?

I'll receive it tomorrow. Can't wait to hear it, even if Storytime was a bit underwhelming for me.

I won't spoil too much for you then, but I can say that Storytime is the worst song on the album. The rest is magic. Let me know what you think of it after you've listened to it.

Storyline is the best song on the album... I couldn't find anything else interestin here :(

Even more boring than Dark passion play :(

It was.. alright. Too many "weird" songs on it, not enough interesting moments. The long one is really bad with the second part too.
Not even the best release of the month - the Theocracy album was amazing.

Agreed!

Scaretale is, for me, probably one of the best Nightwishsongs ever written.
Storytime is weak and I could live without The craw, the owl, the dove. But the rest is, like you say pure magic! Have given it only 5-6 spins yet, but starting to think this may be their best album since Wishmaster.

what, like saying it should have had buckethead on it to make balu's head explode and rebel's pants explode?

Yes! And add something along the lines of "Sonata Arctica is boycotting Israel", to throw Hinata and Miditek into the fold.

I'm not a Nightwish fan and they sure didn't make me one as I heard one of their new songs on the radio. The vocal line was exactly the same as in a Firewind song from Days of Defiance

13 songs on the nightwish album
13 songs in the firewind album
nightwish songs were written before the firewind album was even released.
it would be interesting if the vocal melody in 2 of the songs were really the same.

I've listened to it four times now, so here's my initial reactions:

Taikatalvi: Could've done without it.

Storytime: Kind of ok, but nothing special to me.

Ghost River: you may have heard about how death metal legend Morbid Angel angered their fans by releasing their own St. Anger, Illud Divinum Insanus. The most infamous part of the album is the song Radicult and its "kill a cop" chant at 0:47:

<object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MZlN_3SCetY?ve ... ram><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MZlN_3SCetY?ve ... p;hl=fi_FI" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

Anyway, it's hard for me to get over how much Ghost River's chorus reminds me of that part.

Slow, Love, Slow: Really a pleasant surprise how fluently they mixed jazz with traditional Nightwish sound here. One of the most memorable songs on the album for me.

I Want My Tears Back: I really with they had left the "I want my tears back" shout at the beginning. Probably my least favourite with Song of Myself and Storytime.

Scaretale: Brilliant! Kind of bizzare in a way that I really like. Reminds me of what Avantasia & Jon Oliva did on Death is Just a Feeling. Probably my favourite off the album. I really love the brass in this song.

Arabesque: Always a fan of mixing oriental elements with metal. I think it's by far the greatest instrumental they've ever released.

Turn Loose the Mermaids: I've never been fan of their ballads, but I kind of like this so far. The spaghetti western / Ennio Morricone influence fits here really well.

Rest Calm: I've read many fans calling it repetitive and/or boring, but I like it a lot so far. A bit difficult song to grasp.

The Crow, the Owl & the Dove: A pleasant surprise. Tuomas called this the most poppyish song on the album, so after hearing Storytime, I didn't have too high expectations about it.

Last Ride of the Day: The only song of which I can't remember anything about even after 4th listening. I've heard some call it their favourite, so maybe I'll just need to keep on listening...

Song of Myself: Reciting poetry for the last 6-8 minutes of the song sounds like a terrible idea and... it kind of is. I think it would've worked better if they had e.g. divided it into two parts and added maybe a bit more ballsy section in between.

Imaginaerum: Orchestral reprise of the themes from all other songs as part of the album feels really unneccessary to me. Sure it's meant for the end credits of the movie, but who watches those anyway?

It'll take some more time to digest it. Now it just feels like a bit "meh" album for me, the same way Century Child did and continues to do.
I've got to add, that Anette's singing sounds a LOT better on this, than on Dark Passion Play.

Starting to sound a lot better already. :)

Someone already linked to this in another thread, but almost 1% of the population of Finland purchased Imaginaerum in its first 2 days of release:

I didn't like it much, Dark Passion Play was better.
Storytime is, IMO, the best song on the album.

First Nightwish I bought since Anette. I really like it a lot, mostly because they stopped trying to do what they did a lot better before, but created something different instead. Great how the music manages to create a certain atmosphere for me, I'm curious to see the movie.

So much soul, power, and emotion in this album...it's magnificent. The lyrics are amazing and the songs are varied and keeps things interesting. The sound is massive...overall, great album! Can't wait to see Nightwish in Hollywood! 8 more days!

This album was fun and exciting on the first 2-3 listens, but after that it gets rather old rather quickly. Except for a few songs I thought it was forgettable. I do think Anette sounds great, but I just wish the album wasn't so...dull.

Fantasy lyrics, rollercoasters, imaginary wonderlands?

As a psychology student I can tell something's wrong with all you people. Get out and get a life, quit escaping from the reality. It doesn't bite (much).

And wanting your tears back is a clear sign of trust issues and inability to cope with life's events. You live, you learn. Every smile and every tear is part of that.
