They are disgusting creatures but at least they don't bite. Be thankful you don't have brown recluse spiders which is a common biting pest in Southern USA homes.
I have never had roaches, thank goodness. I have heard that boric acid sprinkled under the sink helps some. And, roaches are no reflection upon a persons cleanliness, a person can have a clean home and still have roaches. However, my late uncle was a professor exterminator and as he always said, "When it comes to any household pest be it roaches, spiders, or rodents you have to nix them in the bud." In other words, don't panic, but try to rid your apartment of the boogers or slow them down or they will take over, more or less. Female roaches are egg laying machines.

Until then, swat or crush when necessary. And clean up the mess with a clorox, or lysol solution. Its rumored roaches can cause diarrhea.
