Hey Shurik and Cliff, it's good to see you guys again. Feels good to be missed.
If you want to know the truth Shurik, I stopped posting because I was so sad that you and Allison had been banned. It was my sort of silent protest, if you will. And of course the Strato situation, and everyone fighting at the forum only made it worse. Then I got a job moderating at not one, but two Nightwish forums, so after a while I was mainly devoted to those and didn't have much time for visiting many of the other forums anyway. But then I heard that Strato was back together and touring the States, so I had to come back here for old times' sake to see if there was any news. Lo and behold, I saw you were back here posting again so I decided maybe it was time to let go of my hard feelings (which really weren't that hard, as I had/have nothing against anyone here and never did) and come back. I'm glad to be back, there are lots of new people here that I don't know but many of the same people that I haven't seen in a long time are still here too. It's hard to believe that just a couple weeks ago it was 4 years since I first posted at Stratoforum and made all sorts of wonderful friends here. I don't know what took me so long to come back, but now that I'm here I'm glad I did!

Now I remember. I think we have exchanged some mails about it last year. I did exactly the same, closed strato.org and stop supporting the band just after the nazy troll + police thing that was totally unfair, not only for Shu and Allison, but for all of us.
But the actual situation with the band is just great and it's also good to forgive to people their mistake, especially if they had mental pbms + sickness.
Okay, let's unite all of us, Allison, Shurik, C and I, and spam this forum like we used to do few years ago !!!

Agreed

I'm not visiting this forum as often as I used to, but I'm always reading and replying when I feel like writing ... I'm also, as I always did, promoting bands that I think are worth of attention

Exactly Cliff, once I learned more about what was really going on behind the scenes with the band, I could not be as angry at what was going on as I could be empathetic to the situation. I understand that now. I'm glad that Tolkki is working out his personal problems in his life and in the band, for it will only make for great music! I can't be so hard on someone going through those problems; after all, Tolkki is human like the rest of us and is entitled to make mistakes. If anything, I feel sorrier for people who are in the public eye like that, for when they do take a hard fall like that, everyone seems to be watching and judging them all the more. I would like to hope that people would forgive me if I reached a point like that and somehow managed to get myself out of it. Anyway, as I'm writing this and trying to say what I mean, all I can think is, "like Tolkki gives a good g*ddamn what I think!"

So I'll just leave it at that and say: good to be back, hope to make friends with all the new people here (thanks to everyone who said hello to me that I didn't know), and time to raise this post count of mine a little!

Not exactly because Strato was passing hard times, it was more because of the atmosphere on the forum which derived from the atmosphere in the band ... Now everything is fine and the forum is fine too
People are coming and leaving all the time - it's the nature of every forum

Well hey Shurik, now that I'm back, we have some catching up to do---what new bands are you listening to these days? I have to say, over the last year I have filled out my Cruachan collection with the exception of the first album! Haven't expanded my Skyclad collection, but the 3 CDs you gave me are in my CD changer and are in constant rotation.

How about you? Have you expanded on your Marillion/Fish collection lately? Field of Crows is an awesome CD, Fish has gotten mellower over the years but he has not lost that poetic ability to convey emotion through his lyrics. I dearly wish he'd come back to the States.
Speaking of great bands coming to the States, I don't know if you happened to see the picture I got with Tuomas from Nightwish in one of the other threads. I finally got to see them last summer, at Disneyland! What a dream come true for any Nightwish fan! LOL, remember the early days of Stratoforum when I did not even know anything about Nightwish? It is thanks to you guys from the old forum days that turned me on to such an awesome band! It is hard to believe back then that I would get so involved with promoting them. You should swing by our fan club forum one of these days and see how we've been doing; we're always glad to see new folks!
I can't recommend too many new bands, it's still the old faves as well as some new ones. Thanks to you (and of course, ultimately thanks to Wilska), I am really getting into Finntroll these days. I remember you recommended them to me long ago.
Takes me a while to catch up.

In course of last 2 years my music tastes shifted heavily towards the electronic music - bands like Apoptygma Berzerk, VNV Nation (check them out, they have great lyrics), Hocico, Deine Lakaien and such ... I still listen to metal, but new bands have to be something really special to catch my attention. My newest favorites are Korppiklaani (great thrash-humppa, they remind me of early Skyclad), Orphaned Land (Israeli band, a mix of different genres - death, doom, middle-eastern melodies, prog, folk), they aren't a new band, but they are sort of new to me ... I also listen a lot to various works of Devin Townsend, both his solo stuff (progressive metal with Pink-Floydish feeling) and Strapping Young Lad (craziest industrial metal ever created). Finntroll had a really great new album, Nightwish very dissapointed me with Once, Skyclad had an amazing new album last year, called A Semblance Of Normality, Cruachan had a great new album (Pagan) somewhat ruined with bad sound ...
About Fish and Marillion - I heard more of Marillion, I listen to it periodically and like it a lot
If you want a specific recommendations - try Orphaned Land "Mabool" and "El Norra Alila", both of Korppiklaani albums and Devin Townsend's Terria and Accelerated Evolution ... Well, and of course Skyclad's new album too

I have heard of Orphaned Land, I will see if I can't find any songs.
I can understand your disappointments with Once. I personally liked it a lot, but I can understand where the older fans are splitting off more from the newer material. I personally thought "Ghost Love Score" was one of the best songs they've ever written. If I had any gripe about that album though, it was that they didn't utilize Tarja's opera voice the way I felt they could have on so many songs, especially "Ghost Love Score". But they were great live, just as great as I'd expected and more. I challenge anyone to say Tarja has lost her operatic voice after seeing them live.
I did download the Skyclad song that was offered on the message board (I tried going there many times over the last year to see if you were ever around, but I never saw you much); it didn't impress me too much though. I'm having trouble with the new singer's voice. I just am not feeling it as much as the original singer.
But yeah, Pagan was a great album but the sound quality was not so good. I did name it one of my favorite albums of last year though. "Viking Slayer" is awesome stuff. Also loved "The Gael" as well.
Speaking of recent disappointments though, I'd have to say I'm really disappointed with the latest Tristania album. It's almost like they're an entirely different band. After listening to it, I thought to myself that Vibeke's voice has been pared down a lot more than Tarja's has. At least with Tarja there is still an element of the operatic voice. I can barely hear it anymore with Vibeke on the Ashes album.

But that's just me. Maybe I'll come around to it later, but it's hard to focus on them as Tristania when all the elements that made them Tristania are seemingly gone.

You can find Orphaned Land songs and videos here:
http://www.orphaned-land.com/default.php?language=en
About Tristania - I haven't heard their last album, but World Of Glass was already not that impressive compared to their 2 first albums ... I'll listen to it if the opportunity arises but I'm not getting my hopes high ...
About Skyclad - try to listen to the whole album, may be it will change your opinion
