Your favourite lyrics/lyricists

I noticed we often talk here about music but I think lyrics are very important too. So that's it, Show us parts of your favourite lyrics and tell about the guys that write the one you really like.

For me, I think my all-time favourite lyric-writer is John Myung from Dream Theater. Learning To Live and Trial Of Tears especially have awesome ones. John Petrucci wrotre great ones in the late DT album (6DOIT and ToT). Of course, Tolkki writes great ones but a bit too muc cheese sometimes (especially on Infinite).

Awesome, i had thought to start a topic of this nature myself.

My favorite lines are from Suite Sister Mary, when Mary sings "I've no more want of any faith/ Bind my arm and feed my mind/ The only peace I've ever known/ I'll close my eyes and you shoot!". The double entendre of it just kills me, partially playing on what's actually happening in the story and also referencing Nikki's heroin addiction in a serious way. Hits me like a ton of bricks every time.

Both TT and TK write very meaningful lyrics, at least to me. The emotional quality of their writings makes them a favorite of mine. And Jon Oliva's lyrics have great imagery. I also like Sonata Arctica's lyrics because they don't usually make too much sense. Which amuses me greatly.

If you're talking about meaningless lyrics, Nightwish's ones are great too :D Tolkki's can be very meanngful sometimes (Season Of Change or WTSR ? for example, Episode is the best album for lyrics imo) but Celestial Dream or Infinity, blaaaaaaah.

My favourite lyrics are by Opeth and Cradle Of Filth i think. First ones because i can kinda relate to some of them and i like the style, Cradle, well because i like this trashy vampire stuff... and apart from the content they have had quite sophisticated lyrics once ;)

I also like many maiden lyrics like Blood Brothers and Brave New World...

And for my amusement: Bronx Casket Company, their lyrics are just great, especially because the vocals sound quite sarcastic. Great.

Oh, and most lyrics on the first five Black Sabbath albums are also good.

There are so many good lyrics... they are just outnumbered by the count of bad ones... this doesnt make sense.

Ronnie James Dio! 8) Also Michael Weikath of Helloween is quite good and can write some pretty original stuff. He is probably the only lyricist in metal who can write happy (see Eagle Fly Free) and humorous (see Dr. Stein and Rise & Fall) lyrics well.

I agree 100% :D Helloween is probably one of the very few metal bands that play happier songs, that I love with a passion.

As for me, the best one is Jon Oliva, the Mountain King !
Savatage is my fav band, with Iron Maiden and Stratovarius. I think Oliva is writing very emotionnal lyrics, personnal stuff which touch me deeply in my heart.

Paul O'Neil usually writes Savatage's lyrics (he's their producer)

IMO the best lyrics, ever, were written by Bruce Dickinson.

Revelations and 2 Minutes To Midnight pretty much sum it all up.

Thanks for bringing that up. Savatage is my favorite band as well! But i wasn't sure exactly how to explain how incredibly fucking atrociously amazing their lyrics are. Plus, a lot of that has to do with their vocal melodies, and then of course you have to consider all the instances of counterpoint...GAH!! *masturbates*

Didn't cry at the Savatage show, although i probably could have....i was too busy trying to find a non-alcoholic drink. ;) But Jon sang Alone You Breathe and i think my world came down at that moment.

I did cry at the Dio show, though. A lot. I actually very nearly cried ON dio himself..

Aye, Frank Zappa! The entire Thingfish album, um, narration and lyrics and everything is like a literary bludgeon from hell. I just love it.

But Jon Oliva did not write those lyrics. True, his delivery is incredible (after all Criss was his brother) but the fact remains, Paul O'Neil did. Jon Oliva writes most of the music for Savatage though, with a lot of input from Chris Caffrey.

Savatage seem to be on ice at the moment, everyone is too busy with their side projects. Dammit! Poets and Madmen was excellent! I'm dying for a follow up!!

Oh, and when I finally get to see Iron Maiden (my favourite band, ever) this summer in Athens, I think the moment that they come on stage I will probably burst into tears. I very nearly did when Stratovarius came on stage and started playing Eagleheart when I saw them 2 years ago!

If I Could Fly is one of my favourite Helloween songs.

I like Jim Morrision's stuff a lot but with a lot of those 60's 70's acid poets one has to wonder how much was the poet and how much was the massive amount of lsd in their system that led to the results.
