Best decade for music ?
Already discussed that on Dream Theater forum and I think it is an interesting subject. So here are the highlights of each :
60's : Early Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin. Masters of classical rock like the Beatles or Stones, Clapton, Hendrix...
70's : Masterpieces by Floyd (Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here...), Zeppelin, Sabbath, early Judas Priest, Rush and Yes just to name a few.
80's : Major releases from Maiden, Rush, Queensrÿche, Priest, Helloween and Metallica.
90's : Good albums from Maiden and Helloween too. Bands like Strato, Symphony X or Dream Theater followed their way through this decade. Late 90's appeared Rhapsody, Nightwish or Sonata.
2000's : All major bands from the 90's continued their way.
Feel free to add some other major bands and give you opinion
For me I think it is the 80's for sure, with all the classics by Maiden and Rÿche especially. Closely followed by the 70's.

Re: Best decade for music ?
From an American prespective, the 80's sucked because of all the techno and retro shit that came out (gereral music, that is, not just metal).
Somehow I still have an account...yay...?

Re: Best decade for music ?
I voted 90's because then there were so many classic bands and albums. 80's has those Iron Maidens and others, but 90's is best.

Re: Best decade for music ?
60: Not really familiar with this
70: Some Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Judas Priest classics. Not bad.
80: Hell yeah! My favourite. Bands like Helloween, Manowar, Maiden, Priest, Accept, Running Wild, etc etc... Did some absoutely breath taking albums.
90: The era of my two favourite albums: Judas Priest - Painkiller and Stratovarius - Visions, but otherwise a bit lame. In my opinion good times for power metal, like Rhapsody, Blind Guardian and Stratovarius. Also some 80's bands did some good stuff, excluding Priest (except Painkiller of course) and Maiden, because their singers left and both of them did two of their worst albums ever. Kiske was also kicked out of Helloween, but I don't mind that, since I actually like Andi Deris very much and two of the last albums they did with Kiske are awful.
00: Quoting MaFiaBoY: "All major bands from the 90's continued their way." Also some folk metal bands like Ensiferum and Finntroll started Then ofcourse Halford returned to Priest and Dickinson to Maiden, where they belong.

Re: Best decade for music ?
The future.
No, really. The best times for metal were the eighties, yeah. But that's because it was then that metal REALLY took a big jump. Maiden, Priest, Helloween, Anthrax, Manowar, Metallica.
However, strangely enough, I'm much more of a fan of more modern metal. Heavier guitars, more complex songs. Stratovarius, Blind Guardian, those are my two favorite bands, except for Maiden and Priest.
I think the future smiles brightly for metal, though We have great new (or , at least, that only GREW recently) bands with great potencial, like Rhapsody (if they kick the damn vocals outta there ), Sonata, Nightwish, Evergrey, Kamelot.. I could go on forever.

hmmm, i like each decade ive lived in for each reason (born in the 80s not really concious of music back then but meh) 80s had the highlights of metal as a world movement, 90s you have the modern metal, and 00s is where the 90s bands (strato, rhapsody, sonata, nightwish) have made names for themselves and still continue to change the genre

Without a doubt the 70's. Heep, Purple, Sabbath, Zeppelin, Floyd, AC/DC, Kiss, Aerosmith, Priest, Maiden, Wigwam, Ypö-Viis. Just to name a few examples of the greatest musik of that time.

Well...I voted for the 80's, even though I was just a kid, too bad I wasn't thinking by that time, but base on what MaFiaBoY said< I made my vote.
I am just a :newbie: in the metal scene, but I hope to stay heavy for now on!

Re: Best decade for music ?
Hey when you talk about 80's your list of great bands just get wider and wider...you missed Skid Row, Guns & Roses, Yngwie Malmsteen, Stratovarius (which date from the 80's actually), so 80's are not only the gods (Iron Maiden) or Metallica, there are those bands i told you, and many more to add in to the list
So....80's rule!!!

BTW, which band can be considered as the first ever metal band? What do you think boys and girls?

In metal: 90s, and 2000+
Other Rock:60s,70s,80s
I pick up a few stations on radio, and my one of my favs is a station that just plays Oldies from that time.

Black Sabbath's debut (s/t) is considered to be the first metal album, but at least in my opinion the first truly Heavy Metal band, who showed what metal is all about was Judas Priest.Beast_Pete wrote:BTW, which band can be considered as the first ever metal band? What do you think boys and girls?

Re: Best decade for music ?
For me, the same : 80's are the best years for rock and metal. We had the NWOBHM, great bands as Trust, Van Halen, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Wasp, Black Metal, Metallica, Thrash Metal...etc...
And the best thing which happened in 80's is...
...my birth!!!

Toutes choses étant égales, par ailleurs, la solution la plus simple est toujours la meilleure.
