Does your partner have to be a metalhead?

Post by NordicStorm » Fri Oct 14, 2005 3:16 pm

Strago posted something in another topic that gave me the idea for this topic.

Is it an absolute must that your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse/alien prober has to like metal? Would you absolutely not under any circumstances date a person who doesn't like metal? And if so, uhm, why?

It just strikes me as rather confining, is all. Practically no one I know listens to metal or rock music to the same extent as I do. When I'm dating, it just wouldn't occur to me to shun someone on account of their taste in music...unless they like Boomfunk MCs.
Yeah, if she happens to like the same music[1] as I do it would probably be a plus[2]. But it wouldn't be a deal breaker if she didn't.

Your thoughts?

for me it doesn't matter what music she's listening
i even can't understand how someone could hate someone just because of music.. i mean, there are so many other things two persons can share, why should music be so important?? i'm listening to metal, but that doesn't mean that i'm running around and killing people, like many people think about metalheads.
friends of mine are listening to hiphop, but.. i like them. i could never hate them just because of the music they're listening.

It helps when you both are alike - in music as in any other aspect.

Nice topic Nordic.

Well...its not necessary, its ok if you and your partner can respect each other tastes, i choosed NO.

But, in my case, all my girlfriends didnt liked metal and i absolutely love metal, ok, im open minded, i listen since elton john to incantation.

And always, always our musical tastes had a kind of "fight". Well, you cant be discussing everytime: "oh, why you listen that? why you dance that shit?" and "hell, how you can listen these fag screams and these undead bears screaming from a cavern?" this pisses me off, you joke about it is totally ok, but hell, after a while this will turn the reason for break the relation. You know...most of them liked to go in those places that plays techno, electronic stuff and other places to dance...of course that isnt my cup of tea...no one of them went to the gigs with me. so, well, impossible to mantain a relation right?

And i never tried to change them, i think that a person needs have enough personality to keep their opinions doesnt matter what will happen, appear, listen, read...whatever, but them all tried to change me.

Thats why i wanna find a metalhead to me, at least, i believe that we wont discuss about that. Music is a big part of my life and always was and i think that would be so great find somebody that share the same love and tastes as you.

No, but NO Country music, please! Except Alabama, Willie Nelson&Dolly Parton! =P

However, a like for the same groups&music makes for more conversation. When my Ex&I first hooked up we listened to Ironmaiden, Steppenwolf, CCR, Lynard Skynard etc. together&we grew closer at that time.

It helps to have similar music interests/tastes, but I do not think it is essential.

I don't care what are her musical preferences as long as she doesn't say "you will not listen to that noise as long as I'm with you" ... Respect has to be shown from both sides ...

It doesnt matter too much. My ex's were all into pop/chart stuff really. But I got to know my current girlfriend through metal, and it does help that we like going to the same places and go to gigs together and enjoy similar (not all the same) bands. She likes certain bands more than the ones I primarily listen to, and vice versa. Quite healthy if you ask me.

that's pretty much the same thing with me. i mean, it'd be somehow interesting if we share the same musical orientation, but as long as respect reigns our relationship, then everything goes on the right way.
My girl is not a metalhead at all, as a matter of fact she is far away from being a metalhead, but she likes some stuff i like and visceversa.

I voted with a yes, but only because I prefer metalheads. There is more topic to talk about. The best would be a StratoFan, someone that is as fanatic as I am. :D (anyone here around? )

I agree with you, Beast. It would be awesome if she were a metalhead but it's not end of the world if she isn't. Today I saw an awesome metalhead girl. Gosh I shoud've ran out of the train to talk to her

For me that's not important. Well, I like other bands besides Stratovarius, like Radiohead and Coldplay. They aren't metal, but they're rockbands. My ex is a big fan of these bands. First time we talked was because he said "I like Radiohead" so we start talking about this band. Well, in the case of Coldplay, we started to hear this band together...
I introduced Stratovarius to him and he really liked it. I even invited him to the stratogig here on 2003...
Well, I guess music was really important in our relationship, but I don't know what's gonna happen the next time... :?

But it's better to have sex while listening to metal than to rap or some shit like that...

(latin music should be good too, but I have not tried it... yet  )

it shouldn´t be essential but.... it can be a help. Less discussions at home and the car about " what the hell are you gonna listen"?

What does poseurs means? Haven't voted 'cuz of that.

None of my girls have been metalheads except the one "I'm currently with" I mean, she's not a total metalhead, but she really likes this kind of music, like, yesterday, she told me that one of her sisters broke one of her CDs, (Metal CD) and she told me to make her a list of about 20, metal songs. But, hell, she listens to Regueaton (or however that shit is spelled) And I don't like that. But, hey, If I have to dance it, that or Techno, or whatever she might throw at me, hell yeah! I'm dancing.

'Cuz a relationship is more than just music, there are 20XXXX topics besides music. He, one of my girls told me to stop listening to that music, and I said: yeah, ok. 2 minutes later I was headbanging in front of her, and that didn't do anything to that 'special' thing we had/ve.

So, no, that it's not necesary.

it doesn't really matters to me, my last BF didn't even know what metal was.

My current sort of BF is a mago de oz freak and mostly listens to power metal, I'm more into Gothic metal.. so there it's a difference, now i'm introducing him in the gothic world

Me and my fiance both like different kinds of music, not just metal. So we share alot of tastes in music. Its good to be able to listen to music together and both enjoy it. It wouldn't matter to me if we had the same taste in music, but having it is a real plus.

I agree with Static_J. If your partner had the same or similar tastes, the relationship would be great. However, I would also like her to remain the way she is and I would like her to show me the music she likes, maybe I'd like it as well.
