For those of you who think Power Metal is fast...

Here is a live video of the drummer from Nile, George Kollias. As any Greek forum members probably know, he's unbelievably good and fast (as his work with Nightfall showed)

Prepare to be amazed. What's really incredible is that he has nothing on the monitors except the vocals, he's like a machine.

Truly astonishing video.

This is not as fast. The specificity of some blastbeats is only there are numerous breaks in this drums playing...nothing really impressive. The death and black metal drummers aren't tired at the end of the show, as they only play breaks after breaks after breaks, and so on. Only tempos changes. That's really bad. They can't keep a 250 bpm rythm for a long time, all the song long. But, power metal drummers can keep the rythm during a song. Just look at Jörg Michael or at Aquiles Priester. Power metal drummers rule!

For example, to illustrate what I say :

Most death metal drummers are completely sweat-drenched by the end of a show.

And, yes, death metal drummers are generally more technically capable than power metal drummers. (Technically capable, I didn't say anything about 'better' because that's wholly subjective). I'm guessing George Kollias or John Longsreth or Gene Hoglan wouldn't have any trouble playing a Stratovarius or Blind Guardian song, for example. I doubt that the reverse is true in many instances.

Here is George Kollias doing a drum clinic. This is a simple speed exercise that is very reminiscant of power metal. Most power metal songs have the same beat over and over, it gets boring sometimes...

Power metal is more simple than technical death metal. Hence the general levels of musicianship tend to be higher.

Exactly, both are fucking genious, it is all matter of capabilities in their stuff.
For example, Alex Holzwarth can play double bass fast and long yeah, but also Nile has a song in which the double bass lasts the whole song, about 4-5 min.
I really look up to drummers, power and death ones, Jörg Michael is such an isnpiration for many guys...why? because he kicks ass, he is fast, creative and his technique is sweet.
The same thing with Neil Peart, he put the excessive in progressive.
Or what about Death's Richard Christy, he is freaking awesome!

Cheers for drummers :D

Hm. That's not totally true. If you take an ear on what Galloglass does or on Nightmare's works, you'll hear that what is you're telling isn't always true. You also have Angra's work which is different.

But sonata arctica, dragonforce and even CoB are the same beat always.

Once i saw Aquiles saying in a interview that most of the power metal drummers are used to doesnt play double bass live, they "play" it in the soundboard.

hell yeah!
the bands that could give you an idea of blasting, creative and technical drumming could be: The Berzerker (tho is more into grind core), Nile, Lock-Up, Death, Morbid Angel, Cryptopsy, NECROPHAGIST and Dying Fetus !!!

Speed is not always the most important. Just think about sex. You don't want to do it fast all the time, sometimes you have to slow down.

no, it's definitely not always important!!

but i love fast drumming, as long as the beat changes. i can't stand when it's just constant blast beats or something... i wouldn't have joined the black metal band i'm in if they had had monotonous drumming! but our drummer is fucking fast and creative.

yeah, it's kind of more... epic and melodic? symphonic, i guess... so i'm the symphonic part because i'm the keyboardist!
they're always compared to CoF and Dimmu, like... the sticker on the CD says "for fans of Dimmu and Cradle," but i don't really hear the similarities. there's something really unique about Eclipse Eternal that i can't really pin down or compare to anyone else.
still, it is true that most people who like our band like Dimmu, but those people also like the "vintige" bands too :D

one of my bands cover Dimmu Borgir's "Blessing Upon the Throne of Tyrany"
i like black metal, but i'm more into death metal, such as Death, Dark Tranquillity, Necrophagist, etc...and the black metal that i like is more into Borknagar, Dimmu, old Cradle of Filth, Immortal and Vital Remains (BTW, have you ever heard Vital Remains? that band would fit perfect in the drummers topic)
