PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A photo of a one-eyed kitten named Cy drew more than a little skepticism when it turned up on various Web sites, but medical authorities have a name for the bizarre condition.

“Holoprosencephaly” causes facial deformities, according to the National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health. In the worst cases, a single eye is located where the nose should be, according to the institute’s Web site.

Traci Allen says the kitten she named Cy, short for Cyclops, was born the night of Dec. 28 with the single eye and no nose.

“You don’t expect to see something like that,” the 35-year-old Allen said by telephone from her home in Redmond in central Oregon.

Allen said she stayed up all night with the deformed kitten on her recliner, feeding Cy a liquid formula through a syringe. She says she cared for the kitten the next day as well, until it died that evening.

Allen had taken digital pictures that she provided to The Associated Press. Some bloggers have questioned the authenticity of the photo distributed on Jan. 6.

AP regional photo editor Tom Stathis said he took extensive steps to confirm the one-eyed cat was not a hoax. Stathis had Allen ship him the memory card that was in her camera. On the card were a number of pictures — including holiday snapshots, and four pictures of a one-eyed kitten. The kitten pictures showed the animal from different perspectives.

Fabricating those images in sequence and in the camera’s original picture format, from the varying perspectives, would have been virtually impossible, Stathis said.

Meanwhile, Cy the one-eyed cat may be dead, but it has not left the building.

Allen said she’s keeping the cat’s corpse in her freezer for now, in case scientists would like it for research.

She said one thing’s for certain: “I’m not going to put it on eBay.”

You mean haunt?

Cyclops kittie is dead because Lambdog killed it. We tried to reason with it to join Engary but it didn't, so it received it's due punishment.

Oh, the poor little kitten. But, experts need to find out what caused the defect--if it was just a fluke, or if chemicals or something might've caused it. Or if it was just a genetic defect. Well, I guess it's crossed Rainbow Bridge into a better place.

What caused it? The gene for eye growth obviously failed for one eye is my opinion...but i'm no doctor :D

yeah-yeah, I know that--but, WHY did that particular gene screw up? Something only a geneticist could/maybe answer.

In 1986, after that Nuclear Reactor accident in Chernobyl, Russia, there were babies(fetuses)that were cyclops. And that makes me wonder if some environmental accident caused the kitten cyclops? Something caused the genes on a particular DNA strand to screw-up. Like when a baby is born with defects something caused the genes on a certain strand of DNA to mess up. Which results in that particular defect. In other words, if the Helix is not perfect, something is not going to be right!

And guess what, the government in Hungary (and I bet, in most comunist countries), did not tell anything about the accident. My parents said, that I was playing outside at those days, after the accident happened, and I think, they are afraid of me getting some problems because of this later in my life.

The accident happened right before Vic was born--I remember that event because people in USA were scared it might effect people this far away because of the prevailing winds circling the globe. I remember drinking bottled water until Vic was born because my family advised me to do it--actually I never thought an accident that far away would affect people in USA, but on 60 Minutes a few years ago the news crew took a tour in that town closest to Chernobyl&you'd be suprised at the defects people had which were attributed to that accident! And that was when the doctors there showed the journalists all the babies&fetuses(in gallon jars)which were cyclps&worse! :(

I have a soft spot for cats too. I find it sad. Certainly an oddity, but sad no less.
