i think it's the time to write this topic. as some of you may know, tonight is the chinese new year's eve and tomorrow starts our new year - at this time, the DOG year. so happy puppy year to all of you!
for those of you who don't know the animals for the years, the circle is:
rat, bull, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, cock, dog, pig.
so 2006 is the dog year and 2007 the pig year. 2008 is rat year and so goes the circle. ppl born in dog years are kind and loyal.
you can calculate your own animal according to that circle. i did some for strato members (just for fun)
tolkki: horse (which means ambition, hard working and will~)
koti: cock (yes he really can sing...

)
jens: rabbit (i'm cute i'm cute!)
jorg: rabbit (well, rabbit always means sensitive

and kind...)
lauri: snake (at least he is slim

just kidding, snake means clever)
it's a pity we forgot to ask strato to play a new year song for us in HK...

rat means instinct, smart, curious
bull means hard working, practical, patience
this is like astrology and can be really complex. not only the year you born, but the month, the date, the hour can mean a lot. as we have this "elements" stuff to discrible your personality and fate. the five elements are metal, wood, water, fire and earth. we check the birth year, month, date and hour, each of them gives 2 elements, so there will be 8 in all. that's your birth chart. if those 8 contain all the 5 elements then you are "complete". if, for example, you don't have water in those 8 elements you got, your parents will -guess what? add the word "water" in your name to make you complete. or, find you a wife/husband whose chart contains too much water.
this kind of things don't always happen nowadays, but believe or not, that really works. like astrology works sometimes.
the 5 elements make a circle. metal comes from earth, water comes from metal(when metal melt), wood comes from water(like tree grows), fire comes from wood(buring), and earth comes from fire(ember).
in the other way round, water kills fire, fire kills metal(melt), metal kills wood(axe), wood kills earth and earth kills water.
but don't bother asking me which kind of element are you. we are all metal, ya know.
[in fact, i'm a water person, and don't have wood in my chart. that's why i have a wood person as my bf

]

Then you should give us a link where we could check our elements. Anyway, the bull thing really fits me, mostly in patience.
Ohh, and "ember" means human in Hungarian.

@pete
for a complex analysis you need to be able to read chinese.
but for a simple one just try this:
http://chinese.astrology.com/elements.html
@stratobabius
dragon is really cool! dragons are proud, powerful and lucky. they are the king!
btw, you might have noticed, the google logo changed to dog today. ^_^
(which is funny IMO, as in chinese the word "google" sounds like "the lonely dog")

Yap, I'm quite patient, at least in some things
but this
"rat means instinct, smart, curious" is mostly me, though not sure about the smart part

but at least I'm allways damn curious about everything

Aha, my element is water. Even some parts of the description might fit me.
If I understood/calculated right I´m a pig.

about that part, me to! Except with mathematical or physics related things...computer codes and all that crap either...argh...
everything else interests me a lot!
(I guess I'll try to find out where does my lack of patience come from... between other similar horrible things of my personality...hehe)

I'm a metal monkey
It sounds much better in Spanish: Mono metalero (that would be slang for "metalhead guy"

)

tiiiiiiiiiiger!
IceBreaker wrote:Aha, my element is water. Even some parts of the description might fit me.

aha! i'm a water pig too.
pig means innocent and rich, so i love my animal sign.
ya know, chinese think dog and pig are 2 of the best animals in that circle. therefore they even wait until dog or pig year to give birth to their child. that's why when i went to school, there were more than 60 kids in my class while 2 years earlier or after they have only 50.(yeah i know 50 is too much, too. but we are in china...)
btw, when you calculate the year, you need to take the month into consideration, too. coz chinese new year always starts from Feb. instead of Jan. and you might belong to last year instead of your birth year, if you were born in Jan.
another thing: if you become 12, 24, 36...in another word, the year which has same animal sign as your birth year, in our tradition you need to wear something red. normally is red underwear

or a red cotton belt. in old days they wear it the whole year but now we only do it on birthday(birthday in chinese lunar calendar only. it's good to have 2 calendars btw, as you can have 2 birthday parties and only become 1 year older...).

For me it became a tradition, that I celebrate my birthday with my friends every third year. Dunno how, but it happened so, that I could organize it every third year.

My first bd party was at the age of 9, then 12, then 15 and then I thought, I should continue like this. So I'll have my 5th bd party this year. Everyone here is invited.

(and in 2009, I'll have my 3rd period of Chinese something started... you know, I'll be 24

)
