Actually, the guy who created the Simpsons paterned them after his own family! Not the actions, but the characters--though most familys do have their Simpson moments!

That show started back in 1989, when I was in 8th grade, and it's still going strong. Amazing. I don't watch it like I used to, but the show is very funny. Futurerama was funny too.

Bart is a "wordplay" of Brat---actually Bart is the only "Fictional" one---the rest are based upon the creator's family: Mom was Marge, 2 sisters named Maggie&Lisa, and Dad was named Homer. He said his family felt honored.
