I'll tell you some favorite European bands of mine.
Scorpions
Whitesnake
Yngwie J Malmsteen's Rising Force
Queen
Europe
Dio
Judas Priest
King Diamond
Kreator
Amorphis
As you asked, I didn't include any power or progressive bands

Also, not all of them play metal (I suggested those in case you want something "lighter" except metal)

If band has keyboards it DOES NOT mean that it is power metal.....
For example Cob is not power metal.

Nitpickers, you all!

Metal sub-genres have no accuratre borders. You go ask ten people about a band's sub-genre and you get ten different answes about their sub-genre.
stratorobbo wrote:a keyboard = power
Yeah, that's a good example of stereotyping.

You obviously know Stratovarius.

And Sonata Arctica, Nightwish and HammerFall too. I'll try to give some more names though...
Dragonforce
Edguy
Children of Bodom
Saxon
Richard Andersson('s Space Odyssey or Majestic or Time Requiem)
Rhapsody (of Fire)
Within Temptation
But I bet you already knew some of these too.
Some Hungarian bands that sound good too: Edda (Works), Mithril, Without Face, Republic.
I hope that I could help you find bands you would like to listen, too!

Indeed. And Kamelot is from Florida, except for Khan who is Norwegian and the new keyboardist who is German... Still, the band's headquarters is Florida and the main composer is Youngblood.
