Guys, I have seen that not all of you have long hair. I wonder why metal means to have long hair? Or what does it means to you, long or short hairs?
Why can't/want you have long/short hair? job, family, others?
I just want to know what do you think about that...
EDIT: I have added a forth option: I am female and have short hair - but it won't work

Long hair have been a trend since the first metal and rock bands were created in the 70's...Perhaps a remnant of the hippies?I liked long hair only because of the headbanging.

Anyway, I wanted to have long hair, but long hair didn't want me it seems...It started falling.

But now I'm ok again after cutting it!

... and in the Hippie-era, it was a kind of revolution?
It's nice to have longer hair, stratobabius, but it needs time too
I thought I have to try the long hair style. Now I can do it because I go to school and on my job it's possible or: my boss says it's ok. Remember I work on a bank! And when I would cut my hairs, I would let them grow so long... So I have my cut and let the hair do the talking

I had long hair once, it's a pain in the ass and isn't worth the trouble ... I don't look like metalhead at all, no long hair, no bands' t-shirts

Short hair for me. Besides, male pattern baldness runs in the family, so it's very likely only a matter of time before it would become an Xtr3me mullet™

Like Shurik, I don't dress like a metalhead either; I'm just not into the metalhead garb...

I had so many times short hair that I was ashamed by this kind of hair-styling. I prefer to have long hair (I'm long-haired since 5 years now) and for me metal is a question of long hair...

I am me, I don't want to 'look' metal, I want to look like I do, individual!

Long hair & headbanging. Aah.
Anyway, I think also having long hair is refreshing, I namely became completely bored with short hair or even short trendy hair.

As long as I´m student it´s good to grow hair.

Not "long" by metal standards (think more like Jorg than Lauri) but its getting there. Too bad practically everyone tells me to cut it

Well, I had a long hair, but it had to be shortened. So now I have a semi-long one.

I have long hair VERY long to the top of my butt

But its not because of music I grew it long like that.
Hair is no reflection of musical preference, just like not having piercings or tattoos does not mean a person is not "Metal".

And I hate that hateful stereotypical terminolgy of judging someone to be "Metal" or not. Metal is not a Cult, its simply a style of music&no matter how old a person is, or what they look like, anyone can be a fan of Metal. :headbang:
Stereotypes are so Nazistic!

I share the entire post with you but I dunno what exactly you want to say with your last sentence.
It's right, Metal is a style and lives in a heart and doesn't mean to have long hair, piercings and wear a 10 kilo bandoleer on a gig. But I was surprised on Wacken, how many people have short hair, I recognised after the openair....
And it seems I will have in any months short hairs again...

Well, Any kind of stereotype, saying a person has to look a certain way, even have a certain type of philosophy to like something, or be worthy to be included in a group is kinda judgmental&rigid, and very unfair to say to someone. Maybe Nazistic was too strong a word.
My son has short short&nobody wold say he's not "Metal"!
I remember once a person on a forum said I was not "Metal" and it just flew all over me&I will never, ever forget it. Because this person had alot of rotten gumption to judge me who she does not know. A person knows within themselves their beliefs&all.
