Female rockers?

Post by Carcass » Mon Jan 15, 2007 2:39 pm

Metal and rock in general are very male dominated, sometimes even chauvinistic (not as much today as before, though). Do you have any female artist who write their songs, sing and perform that you like?

My fave is P J Harvey, I love that juicy guitar sound:

Another good song, not as rock as the other, but good nevertheless:

I was just watching her music vids at youtube and couldn't think of anyone else like her, prove me wrong...

I think Doro Pesch&Lita Ford are the classic female rockers who set the tone/example for others to follow.

BTW, from the looks of PJ harvey's Pics, her guitar playing is not the only thing that is juicy ;) She is one hot babe! :)

She certainly is. That kind of, pardon my French, but slutty look is quite sexy.

 Carcass, I saw that pic, too but didn't know if it would be "proper" to post it! =P Well, if you got it, flaunt it, I always say(&did, when I was a young one myself--no hypocrisy here lOL!)! :headbang:

Seriously, there are many talented female rockers&rock groups such as Kittie, plus an LA group whose drummer was almost chosen for Strato, not to mention the many frontwomen who head many ppular groups. Cristiana Scabia(another hottie who graces men's mags often), Tarja(used to sing for Nightwish, but shes a legend), Sharon den Adel(also beautiful), and the list is endless---we'd literally be here all day. :D
The point is, Metal is not just for tattooed, burly, leather-wearing males any more. Its also for pretty, feminine gals donning satin&lace, too! As long as they have the talent&personality there will be a place for them! :)

Oh, I know that the competition has to be stiff among these ladies, so I am sure "strutting their stuff" is just part of the game. In the end it is all about the voice, the talent, the friendliness&humor. Its all in good fun, and like in all vocations, some win and unfortunately, some lose. Hopefully, most will do reasonably well enough to persevere in this career and make a go of it.

Yeah but those girls all sing in gothic/power metal bands, that's not very ballsy, is it? And it's quite a cliché nowadays to have a girl front a band while she's not playing an instrument or participate in song writing. I can think of very few metal/rock bands where a woman is the master mind.

About that pic, well, if it was a pic of Manowar people wouldn't object (maybe just laugh), now that it's a sexy woman they find it "not proper", how laughable is that?

Well, unfortunately, some people are still Victorian. And, you are right---if a female singer dresses provactively she gets sliced in two by females(jealousy, in a way)&talked about disrespectably by males(immaturity, I guess), but hopefully if a woman has the nerve to dress like that she is grown-up enough to take the ribbing. Human nature is human nature&it changes very slowly. And look at MaDonna--she got ribbing just because she used a Cross as a stage prop, and Britney Spears got speared just because she didn't wear underwear, on her own time at that!!!!! The point I am making is, these ladies have to have grat strength of character to make it in the business&must be commended/applauded for that.

BTW, Carcass, this is a good topic&I am going to gogle some stuff later when I have time. I'm sure ther are many female musicians like you mentioned who are struggling to head their own metal band&do it all.

I don't know, I've never heard of most of them. But what I have in mind is a woman who leads a metal/rock band instead of just fronting it. Like in Nightwish Tarja didn't write at all, all songs were written by Jack Sparrow. It seems to me that most of these women do not participate in the creative process, they are quite passive. Rock is still a very male-dominated genre in this sense.

I love her voice, she actually is a full member of the band in the sense that she plays, sings, writes music and lyrics. But The Gathering is not a metal band anymore, their brand of rock is very mellow too. But I like the band, a lot.

I personally remember, when I was much younger, innocent and pure, the song "Barracuda" played by Heart. I did not like Rock music at the time, and I was certainly no metal. It was my "disco time". Sorry, sorry, sorry :)

I don't know though if they still exist, but I remember that song very well. Probably the only one of that kind I liked at the time.

These days, I am in my "Rammstein" period. I just discovered them. See how much I still have to learn before reaching your level?

:D

Love you all!

I know of Heart&I like their music. I liked the song Barracuda, but my fav of theirs was, "Crazy on You."
And, as of 2003 the ladies were still having infrequent gigs.

Melissa Etheridge is also a classical female rock singer. I like her voice very much.
