Nice reply! But would that be with a Spanish accent now that you've been in Barcelona? (I mean Spanish from Spain). Otherwise, instead of "cállate", try pronouncing it "cashate" (with the stress on the second syllable).

What other accent would it be with if not Spanish? South American? I don't really speak Spanish, I don't notice the differences between accents.

I would pronounce the word as Cayate... more or less.

I'm thinking about taking some courses in Spanish next autumn. German is another language I'd like to learn.

Well... There are tens of accents in South America... Paraguayan, Argentinean, Chilean, Colombian, Venezuelan, Bolivian, etc. Not to mention the different accents within a country.

That doesn't help. The point is that the letter "y" is pronounced by most Spanish speakers as an "i" or double "l" (e.g. cállate, cáyate, and cáiate would have practically the same pronunciation). But in Argentina and Uruguay the "y" and the double "l" are pronounced like "sh", so callate or cayate would be pronounced "cashate". I hope I managed to confuse everyone.

@Carcass: I thought that here in stratoforum it's common knowledge that the Finnish "j" is pronounced like an "i". Either that, or I'm extremely wise. The first statement seems the most probable.

I don't know if we speak as if we were singing... It all depends on who says so. For me, Cubans, Mexicans and Spaniards speak as if they were singing. It's all about perspective. Argentina does have a HUGE population with Italian background (myself included, although my background is approx. 75% Italian). Some decades ago, in Buenos Aires there were more people with Italian background than with Spanish background. Anyways, the point is that because of the massive Italian immigration, we do speak with a slightly Italian accent (more than once people here have asked me if I was speaking in Italian when I was actually speaking in Spanish; in fact, one Colombian guy thought that I was Italian because of my accent when he first met me). That's probably what people mean by "singing" when they refer to the accent. Hell, when I was in the Dominican Republic, all the hotel employees would talk to me in English and I had to tell them that I was from Argentina and that they could speak to me in Spanish! And the Argentine slang does have lots of Italian words. Btw, to avoid confusion, I should clarify to you that I am from Buenos Aires but I live in Canada (most people here know that, but you probably missed that).


@vanustrato: Sorry, we can't speak in Spanish here. We have to keep it in English for everyone else. There's a Spanish forum in the "Discussion in Other Languages" section, but I never visit it because I like this forum a lot more. I did send you a private message though.

No, she's Catalan, from a small town near Barcelona. Her relatives moved from Spain after the Civil War. Why, I do not know. Either for economic or political reasons, I guess. Or both.

@Stealth, just curious, what do you know/think about this Botnia row? In case you don't know what I'm talking about, Botnia is a Finnish company that is building this factory in Uruguay that will allegedly ruin the environment on the Argentinian side of the border.

Just saw a documentary about this the other day and I had no idea how serious people are there. People were staining the Finnish flag with shit!
