EARTHQUAKE in Kent, UK

Is everyone from UK, OK?
It wasn't a large one, but several streets were evacuated due to damage&gas leaks.

UK gets quakes from time to time, I just wondered how everyone is who is from there. I know there are several people from this forum who reside in UK.

I live in Wales which is next to England and this is the first i've heard about it. Possibly i'll see something on the news about it later this evening?

For people who live in earthquake-prone areas, that wasn't even a hiccup! Cyprus has quite a few, with 5.'s happening quite regularly, as well as people in the eastern mediterranean generally.

So it's funny for us to watch their panicked reactions!

Thank God no one was hurt or killed in this one. There was a really nasty earthquake in Oakland (CA) several years ago that caused some freeways to collapse, and there was loss of life.

Thank God no one was hurt or killed in this one. There was a really nasty earthquake in Oakland (CA) several years ago that caused some freeways to collapse, and there was loss of life.

That was about a 6.8 if memory serves, if not more. Anything over 6 is dangerous, even in developed countries.

6.8 is WAY bigger than a 4.7. About 120 times more powerful, actually. (I was considering going into geology and geomorphology at university before I decided on music, so I do know quite a bit about this stuff... I wanted to be a volcanologist actually...)

I thought UK got quite a bit of snow?

Well, it wasn't a bad earthquake-noone was killed, fortunately--but, I bet the people's whose house was destroyed thought it was not cool!

In USA, the San Andreas faultline is not the only one which poses a threat--the New Madrid line runs down through the South(along Memphis, TN)&if there ever is a big one there, it could prove very catastrophic! Back in the early 1800s(when the New Madrid area was much less populated), an enormous quake hit&the Mississippi River actually ran backwards for a time. Which, of course promoted many lame jokes from the Yankees during that period.

You have to bear in mind that house construction in the UK is not based on reinforced concrete systems as is the case on areas with high seismic activity. The houses are also pretty old. This 4.3 richter scale earthquake was enough to severely damage more than 200 homes rendering a great number of them uninhabitable.

So you have to keep things in perspective.

As for snow the problem with places such as Swansea is mean temperature. If it was as little as a couple degrees lower, Swansea would be buried in snow in winter As a coastal area it has a high moisture content hence excellent conditions for ice crystals to form. Mean temperatures however are relatively high for this to happen.

I 've seen snow in Cardiff however as late as mid-April.
