I’m just worried about all the racist people that are going to call it their duty to kill Obama. I guess a few people live for their skin color and would call it an honor and a duty to do the deed. This is really when passions get scary and I really hope that this does not start that racist terrorism stuff.
Apart from those worse case scenarios, its not what your country can do for you, it’s what you can do for your country. There are no magic bullets and a community takes the care and active involvement of everyone from micro to macro to work. Hopefully there will be a lot of working together instead of working to distance.

As I see it, the vote was not so much for Obama as against the republican party, and the identity of the republican candidate didn't really matter (and it's too bad, because IMO McCain is a better candidate). Americans simply hate Bush and project that hate to his entire party. The financial crisis also helped him.
I wish him luck (because if he fucks up, the entire free world will suffer) but I'm not too optimistic about him. He's a young senator without any noticeable achievements and it'll be extra difficult for him to live up to the expectations. He should at least be smart enough to surround himself with experienced politicians and specialists in various fields. He has to clean all the mess Bush left him and it will not be an easy task.

Thats why Obama chose Joe Biden. Obama knows that he is not perfect and will need alot of experienced help. Also, Colin Powell is being considered for a Cabinet post, as are several other older Senate members. Obama is not a messiah, he just provided hope for a beter USA&world. I hope he can live up to some of the expectations people have of him, or there are going to be lots of disappointed folks who put their faith in him, hook, link&sinker!
I don't think my liitle corner of the universe is going to change much because Obama got elected, but maybe he can improve some things in the world at large, and thats cool!

From the exit polls that I have looked at a so far the Republican Party lacks diversity and appeal to multiple cultures.
Ill have to make a chart from the exit polls. While not so accurate, they are at least interesting to me to see what the people that filled them out are like and give a partial indication.

The vote was FOR Obama just as against the republican party. Fact is, people should stop seeing Obama as a messiah. The expectations are too high. But IMO the comparison to JFK is not too far-fetched. He can develop that way. And he has a very good staff of advisors, experienced people. Anyways, I like him because he seems to be a serious, differenciating, reasonable person. Much more than GWB, but even more than Bill Clinton or other recent presidents.
Yes, the heritage that GWB leaves behind gives him a very ungrateful start. Let's pray for him and wish him the best.
Btw, McCains speach after his defeat shows him as a great statesman. Honest, modest, reasonable. Also interesting was GWB's reaction. Kind of an admiring gratulation to Obama. I think he realises slowly what mess he brought to the US and the world, and sees that this vote is the best for the country.

I really do believe that Obama is a "blank slate" on which people project their fantasies...he's really a celebrity candidate, supported by droves of clueless teenagers, satisfying their primitive needs to belong to an arbitrary group.
And of course I don't mean this in an offensive way but I believe that his race (and also young age and handsome appearance) was a very significant characteristic which helped elect him...most American youth would have otherwise been bored by another old white guy. And to anyone who disagrees with me, explain why 95% of African American voters supported Obama? Surely this isn't a coincidence!
