Rage formed in 1984 under the name, Avenger. After releasing their debut album Prayers of Steel and their Depraved to Black EP in 1985, the band changed their name to Rage because there was another band in England that also carried the moniker. Originally the new name was to be Furious Rage but it was eventually shortened to Rage. The first album released under the new name was Reign of Fear in 1986.

Rage's albums came out in regular, continuous intervals, and the band began touring with the likes of Running Wild, U.D.O., Motörhead and Saxon in the early 1990s. Their 1992 album Trapped marked their international breakthrough, a short highlight being Rage's tour in Japan. Their success was repeated again in 1993 with the release of The Missing Link. After change in their lineup, Rage went on to record Lingua Mortis, the first classical album by a German metal act, in 1996. Their material was performed live for the first time in late summer 1996 in Kufstein, Austria. Subsequently, Rage, and the orchestra used, embarked on a celebrated Christmas tour and played several European festivals.

Their thirteenth album XIII saw the light of day in March 1998. The next album Ghosts was followed by a major line-up change, featuring Peavy Wagner, Victor Smolski and Mike Terrana. The trio performed at Wacken Open Air in August 1999, revealing their newest album Welcome to the Other Side. The following releases Unity and Soundchaser were met with enthusiastic response from critics and fans alike. Rage toured with Primal Fear in 2002 and Helloween in 2003 and proved to be successful outings. Rage recently celebrated their 20th anniversary with both a live CD and DVD entitled From the Cradle to the Stage, documenting new and old material and showing their strongest material.

On December 6, 2006 the split with drummer Mike Terrana was officially announced, due to personal and musical differences. On January 1, 2007 it was announced that their new drummer would be André Hilgers. In 2007 the band toured in Europe with a show featuring one symphonic orchestra from Minsk, Belarus under the name "Lingua Mortis Orchestra", and the concert in that August at Wacken Open Air at 100,000 fans was recorded for a DVD to be included as bonus to their New Album called Carved in Stone and released on February 22, 2008.

The band will play at Bundesvision Song Contest 2009 (BUVISOCO) on 13 February 2009, the Festival is hosted by Stefan Raab (TV Total).

Since this thread isn't generating much interest...

Ragehead91, what's personally your favorite album? And song?

As for me, I haven't heard all the albums but I'd say Soundchaser would pretty much be a perfect entity.

As for the song, well, as I said, All This Time. :) "Paint the Devil on the Wall" a close second.

My favourite Album:
1. Black in Mind
2. Trapper/The Missing Link (both great)
3. Unity

My favourite song is Higher than the Sky. That song made me listen to metal and find out about all the other bands. It was the first song that I heard from them. The live version from 2004 and the Wacken 2001 version. I can't really decide a 2nd or a 3rd place because there are so many other Rage songs I love.

They have actually 4 albums with Orchestra. Lingua Mortis, XIII, Ghosts and Speak of the Dead (the first 8 Tracks).

don't have any of Rage's albuns, but my fiancee lend me that compilation, "the G.U.N years"! Such a fantastic one! i have also heard "XIII" album in a friend's house, absolutely brilliant also!
I have also chosen some of that compilation's songs to download to my mp3 player!

The new Rage Studio album will be released in February of 2010 and it will be called "Strings to a Web"!

Studioreport:
Hi Rageheads

As we are recording our new album for a considerable time meanwhile, I’ll get into touch with you to bring you up to date regarding the songs. We’ve almost finished the recordings, just some small details have to be worked out before we start with the mix.

We are working on following songs, (as far as everything isn’t finished, following remains under caveat, certainly)

Empty Hollow
Music: Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

Empty Hollow is the „main work“ oft he album. An almost 20 minutes, completely orchestrated work, consisting out of 5 parts. The whole work, Victor has perfectly composed and arranged. It’s really a emotional roller coaster, waiting for the listener. Once, very heavy guitar riffs thundering on our ears, then, it will become gloomy with unforgettable melodies, then progressive parts resounds, which may remember at our well known song "Unity". You can listen to this number a hundred times, and you will discover news like the didgeridoo playing of Jen Majura or Hansi Kürsch's (Blind Guardian) backingvocals again and again.

The lyrics are about deep, inner loneliness, a human, who lost himself, not seeing any place for himself in this world. But by music, a way back to the others opened up finally....

b) Strings To A Web (instr.)
c) Fatal Grace (instr.)
d) Connected
e) Empty Hollow (reprise)

Saviour Of The Dead
Music: Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

A super groovy heavy number with drop C tuning. Sounds real evil. One awesome riff followed by the next before a great melody at the chorus fills everything in shining light.

The lyrics are about the tragical death of Anneliese Michel from Klingenberg. The case was commanding the press during the seventies, and was submission for several movies. The girl out of an arrant catholic family was the casualty of an initiated exorcism by the church. Eventually, she died by emaciation due to a schizophrenia, which wasn’t treated. If she and her social environment would have admit a medical specialist care, she would be alive most likely. Now you can see her grave from the road if you pass the cemetery driving through the town. As a friend of mine is living near by, I remember her fate often. That was my inspiration for this lyrics, I try to imagine her sentiments during her last hours...
Top of Page / nach oben
The Edge Of Darkness
Music: Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

A full throttle riff massacre first class, garnished with a catchy hook line in refrain. Mainly, it goes right in the kisser, only the middle part is some more progressive.

The lyrics are about the riscs of the nuclear weapon politics of diverse dictatorial staates...

Hunter And Prey
Music: Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

Here, the tricky riffs racing against each other, try to play that by yourself..:-) Certainly, this circumstance won’t be caught by non-musicians, as this number is just great, rather quick and heavy with cool melodies.

The lyrics are about grievance between the sexes, contingented by archaic thinking and paternalistic macho society structures.
Top of Page / nach oben
The Beggar's Last Dime
Music: Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

Heavy Metal at it's best. This song is riffing through your skull in up-tempo, before presenting some arrangement surprises in the middle part.

Quite ironically, the lyrics describing what we’re facing at the current banking crises: how the rich and powerful people enriches themselves by the poor people.

Top of Page / nach oben

Through Ages
Music: Peavy Wagner, Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

A small and short accustic number, standing in contrast to all the heavy pieces.

The lyric is a kind of recollection.
Top of Page / nach oben
Tomorrow Never Comes
Music: Peavy Wagner, Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

Fiercing riffs in combination with melodic vocal parts and cool accords dominating this song.
It’s dealing about abuse of the own physically recourses. One will not realize the consequences until it’s to late.
Top of Page / nach oben

Into The Light
Music: Peavy Wagner, Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

A perfect metal riff shoving this number, before changing into a dynamic verse, finally ending in an absolutely earworm refrain. I already hear the choirs of the fans if we will play this song live.

The lyrics are about reaching the inner peace....
Top of Page / nach oben
Purified
Music: Peavy Wagner
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

A real first class thrash granate we firing up here, the song’s reminding to our early albums, having real old school feelings. Real snotty vocals, with rough guitars from Victor and highlighted by André’s double bass attacks.

The lyrics are about cold turkey.

Top of Page / nach oben

Hellgirl
Music: Peavy Wagner, Victor Smolski
Lyrics: Peavy Wagner

This mega fat metal steam roller with cool riffs and melodies (and certainly diverse cool drum parts from dad) is dedicated to our new arrival at the RAGE family.

The lyrics have to be seen with a twinkle in your eyes, it‘s about Sam solely. Directly after André knew that he will become dad, we decided to write a song for the little one. Meanwhile, Sam is on the world since some months, here now her own song. Who can say that for himself – getting an own song for birth?

All the best for this life Sam, our Hellgirl !

Up to February you have to wait for this new album, I promise, it will be worth it!

Yours
Peavy
From Victor:
Hello all out there,

After months of work in studio for the upcoming Rage-album "Strings To A Web", I slowly begin to enjoy our new work as finished product! It is such a great feeling to see how few small ideas develop and become something really big. After so many albums, for me it is still some sort of mirical seeing short melodies inside my mind becoming a realistic great song. I have the feeling of that we discovered again something new that brought a lot of fun to us in studio. On the highway there has never been a Rage album that brought so much fun by listening - either you want to go at full throttle or you start dreaming away. The mix of catchy riffs, sometimes down tunings on the guitars and very interesting harmonies, which connect with the voice melody to something that you imedately want to sing along causes that you want to listen right from the beginning as soon as the record is finished playing. On these 14 tracks I have done the most interesting and inredible soli with different tricks and sounds within my whole carreer I think and this made me be able to express all my emotions. Thanks to the further developement of ENGL Amps like f.e. the new Fireball modell, which I used additional to my invader in studio, I tried to bring my guitar sound to another level. "Strings To A Web" is definitely a CD, which I think, will last in my CD-Player for some years longer. From bombastic orchestral parts with fat choir backings on Empty Hollow, to progressive parts during Strings To A Web up to heavy moving riffs on Saviour Of The Dead, this Ragealbum leaves no further requests up to the listeners! The only thing is that you have to be patient until the release in 2010 ;) This album is the greatest one I've ever produced!

hahaha... the trick worked with Kai Hansen the first few times but not this time.

The song that sounds the most interessting to me is Saviour Of The Dead. The topic of the lyrics alone make this thing awesome! Because we all know that Peavy is a creat songwriter!

RAGE: Limited-Edition Digibook Version Of 'Strings To A Web' Detailed
Veteran German metallers RAGE will release their new album, "Strings To A Web", on February 5, 2010 via Nuclear Blast Records. The CD was recorded at Twilight Hall Studio and was produced by Charlie Bauerfeind (BLIND GUARDIAN, HAMMERFALL). The cover artwork was created by Thomas Ewerhard (AVANTASIA, THERION), and it shows the soundchaser as a spider, caught in a web.

The limited-edition digibook version of "Strings To A Web" will include a high-quality DVD including 15 live clips. The main portion of the DVD will consist of the "best-of" show RAGE played at the Wacken Open Air festival in 2009, including guest appearances by Hansi Kürsch (BLIND GUARDIAN), Schmier (DESTRUCTION) and Jen Majura (BLACK THUNDER LADIES).

The tracklist is as follows:

01. Carved In Stone
02. Higher Than The Sky
03. Set This World On Fire (featuring Hansi Kürsch)
04. All I Want (featuring Hansi Kürsch)
05. Invisible Horizons (featuring Hansi Kürsch)
06. Lord Of The Flies (featuring Jen Majura)
07. From The Cradle To The Grave (featuring Jen Majura)
08. Prayers Of Steel (featuring Schmier)
09. Suicide (featuring Schmier)
10. Down (featuring Schmier)
11. Soundchaser

In addition there will be four more live clips:

12. Set This World On Fire (Live at the "Masters of Rock 2009")
13. All I Want (Live at the "Masters of Rock 2009")
14. Carved In Stone (Live in Sofia 2009)
15. Never Give Up (Rage Race Special)

"I am really proud of the album, we hardly ever sounded more inspired and it is an absolute highlight in our career," says bassist/vocalist Peavy Wagner. Drummer André Hilgers adds, "This albums show all the different faces and characters and I call it the most enormous and multifarious record I ever recorded."

"Strings To A Web" includes melodic and anthemic tracks such as "Into The Light" and "The Beggar's Last Dime", as well as powerful thrashers like "Purified" and "Tomorrow Never Comes". But the heart of the record comes in the shape of the 16-minute masterpiece "Empty Hollow", a progressive fairytale that unites everything RAGE is about.

"You can compare 'Empty Hollow' to our 'Lingua Mortis Suite' from the 'Speak Of The Dead' record," says guitarist Victor Smolski. "This song was recorded with an orchestra and is divided into five parts.

"As a band we have discovered a lot of new possibilities and elements, even in Peavy's vocals, my way of playing guitar or the arrangements in André's drumming."

Dayal Patterson of the English magazine Metal Hammer decribed the record as an "intense, frantic and technical assault tempered by clean sung choruses and harmonies!" His spanish collegue Sergi Ramos of Metal Hammer stated, "Everything you love about today's RAGE sound plus a dose of old-school thrown in for good measure."

Indeed. And he still is a great songwritier. Purified was composed by him. And as much as I love Victors compositions, I think Peavy should compose more stuff on his own.

I really like that one. Some great songs on there. A really fitting ending to the Lingua Mortis Trilogy. I can understand that some people don't like it because it is to "popy" but if you just give it some time you'll find out that it is not really that different from XIII.

Also, I'd like to hear the demos from this album just to find out how much of the songs they re-arranged after Chris, Spiros and Sven left and Vitor and Mike joined the band.
