Symphony X question

There seems to be some fans here (just like on any metal forum).
I have keeped an eye on them for a year.
I haven't bought any albums yet even though they were one of my favourite bands back when I got into metal.
I like some songs I have heard a lot. ( Evolution, Inferno, Set the World on Fire)
But on the other hand there are lots of songs with no meaning to me at all.
I need hints and tips on which songs to try to find out do I really like their stuff enough to a buy an album. So recommend songs that I could like.
Also name some albums that I should buy first and why.
Thank you all already.

Well, this is a very hard question since we don't know what you do like. For one person a song can mean everything and for another person it can mean nothing.
My favourite is "Of Sins and Shadows"

I thought of that while writing the post.
But then I thought that lets open the conversation and give more exact information after I get the thread open.
I mainly listen to Power Metal yet I like some other bands like the "Hybrid metal" Kiuas (yet almost power metal.
Some Death Metal of bands like Diablo.
If you want to know about the instrumental side I like Stratos instrumentals the most so that kind of skilled playing is fine.

I really like the album Paradise Lost, awesome guitar playing and great vocals.
I don't quite like the previous albums as much as Paradise Lost.
(You could probably search for Paradise Lost on Youtube and listen to the songs before you buy the album and see if you like any of it)..

A really good first album to get would probably be 'Divine Wings Of Tragedy',
and 'The Oddysey' is also very very good album,
try out some of the longer songs, you should be able to listen to most songs of the album on youtube, if not all of them.

I agree with Stratodan "divine wings of tragegy" is a great album to start with.
However if your not used to a Symphony X album I will warn you now that they are very progressive, so if you are a fan of this genre there should be no problem however if you aren't you may not like it that much.

Yeah Divine Wings of Tragedy is probably the best to go for.

My second favourite band. Listen to Divine wings of Tragedy, Oddysey, V, Paradise Lost...I mean, there are some different kind of songs there.
SymphonyX is not as prog as DT for example (I don't like very much DT). It's some kind of progresive power metal, anyway there are a bunch of totally progressive songs too.
It is a fantastic band, and all the members are genius. Allen's voice is maybe the best in metal scene regarding versatility and power. Romeo is uncomparable imo, then you have Lepond which is one of the few bass players that you can see something more. Pinella is somekind of Jens but not that fast (you know Jens is perfect in all the combinations). Rullo is a really good drummer, anyway I prefer Jörg.

Funny most people are telling me to buy divine wings of tragedy yet I was not even able to listen to the title track till the end

and the Church of the Machine was quite boring too.
Yet I know this thing will propably grow on me and I laready like those more straight forward songs a lot so they alone are a good reason to buy and album and I have still hope that the long ones will grow in time.
I will listen to the stuff later as I'm in a hurry but I will report you soon about what I think of the stuff.
And prog is fine. Well I don't have any other Progbands but the stuff and the prog elements are good combined with power metal and well all kinds of metal so I have faith that this will grow in time.

Church of the Machine grew on me more after each listen, at first I didn't care for it, but now I find it to be quite enchanting.

Divine Wings of Tragedy (song) starts to open to me.
I was able to listen it till the end.
I'm still listening to those songs on the list.
I saw paradise lost for 10 € and Divine Wings of Tragedy for 8€
I would have bought either one Iif I hadn't bought 4 other albums in last week.

Ok I will finish this topic by telling that I have grown to love each SX song I have ever heard and I just spotted Paradise Lost with the bonus DvD in my local Record Store (best one ever)
So I'm going to buy it tomorrow.

I just listened to it yesterday and it still sounds amazing. The Walls Of Babylon is my favourite.
The bonus DVD is a total rip-off though, you can hear better quality live-recordings on YouTube.

Thankfully they're now gathering material for an actual live-DVD.

Symphony X rules, mayhem, you'll see.
About the Paradise Lost DVD, yes...the sound quality of the live performances are just horrible.
Let's hope they'll make a better live cd soon, as Mormegil says.

I already see.
I always loved many of their songs now I'm just vertain I will like all of them.
Takes some time to get used to those technical and Proggy songs but it definately is worth it.
And I already new it was Home video quality but like I said better than nothing.
And they indeed have been making a DvD.
I wish we knew better what they are up to.
The officiasl site (which started as a fansite. I know)
Has been updated properly in 2003.
Yet there are speculations in th forum about album being written at the moment and aimed for 2010.

I almost cursed the store I bought the album from.
They forgot my DvD.
Now I e-mailed them immidiately and They also notced their mistake.
Now that everything worked out fine afterall I must say that it is still the best store in the world.
Think of it they have all SX albums in their store each second and they all are special editions or limited editions.
They also have the best prices and online service they have vinyls and tickets.

Getting the DvD would have taken months so I got a few € discount to their store to use in a future and also the other Cd + DvD version of Paradise Lost.
The one with 5.1 mix and music videos.
Seeing videos is always great especially when they are not Youtube quality and when they are in full screen.
Set the World on Fire may have the bes Metal video ever.
