Varg Vikernes (a.k.a. Count Grishnackh), the former BURZUM mastermind who was convicted of murdering MAYHEM guitarist Oystein Aarseth (a.k.a. Euronymous) in August 1993 and setting fire to three churches, is a free man.

"I can confirm that I have been released from prison," Vikernes told Norway's Dagbladet.

Although his parole application was denied four times — most recently in September 2008 — Vikernes received word in February that he would be released after serving almost 16 years in prison. He was finally allowed to leave a couple of weeks ago, according to Dagbladet.

"I will have to report [to the parole officer] for one year — initially every two weeks, and then once a month," Vikernes said.

For the past couple of years, Varg had been allowed to leave the prison regularly to walk around Tromsø, Norway (where the prison is located) and visit his family.

Last year it was reported that case workers at the Justice Ministry feared that Vikernes would be unable to adjust to life on the outside after his years in jail.

"I'm ready for society — and I have been for many years," Vikernes told Dagbladet last July. "I have learned from my mistakes and become older. Now I just want to be together with my family."

He added, "My mind has never been in prison; I think all the time about what I should do on the day that I am released.

"I have barely seen my son since he came into the world. Even though I hear his voice on the phone almost every day, it is very tough to not be present while he is growing up.

"I miss my family. And I look forward the day that I could work on my farm, create music, write books and be with the wife and kids around the clock — and live a normal life.

Vikernes purchased the farm sometime last year and is planning to spend most of his time on the property with his French wife and son, both of whom had already been living at the home for quite some time.

"As I respect others, I want others to respect me," Varg told Varden.no last summer. "We are really quite ordinary people, and we do not want any more attention than anyone else."

Jackson Rathbone, the teen heartthrob from "Twilight", has reportedly agreed to play Vikernes in the upcoming movie "Lords Of Chaos".

Based on Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind's book of the same name, the film depicts true events and revolves around the black metal sub-culture that spawned a wave of murders and church arsons across Norway in the early 1990s.

Making his English-language debut with "Lords Of Chaos" will be hot Japanese director Sion Sono.

Stuart Pollok of Los Angeles-based Saltire Entertainment, Ko Mori of Eleven Arts and Oh Jungwan of Korea's Bom Productions are producing the film, which starts shooting in Norway in mid-September.

In a 2004 statement posted on the Burzum.org web site, Vikernes slammed the "Lord Of Chaos" book as "a pool of mud," insisting that "the vast majority of all the statements made in this book are either misinterpretations; taken out of context; misunderstandings; malicious lies made by enemies; a result of ignorance; extreme exaggerations; and/or third-hand information at best. This includes the statements attributed to me!" He went on to say, "This book serves only one single purpose and that is to create a myth around my name and to mystify me. If that was their objective they have indeed succeeded with their work. Well, the book seems to have served one other purpose too. The authors have managed to fill the heads of a generation of metal fans with lies. What could have been a righteous revolt has been made into some pathetic, embarrassing, brain-dead, impotent and traditional poser-culture best exemplified by bands like DIMMU BORGIR — and indeed VENOM!"

And military uniforms and a forged passport too, I think. I'm not sure he's much of a different person now than he was 20 years ago.

Have you ever read his blood-and-soil rants? This self appointed intellectual has no perspective on things, he probably spent all his time writing music and getting drunk before being sent to prison. If you do some surfing you can see that some people actually take him seriously.

EDIT: Hey, hang on! He has a French wife? So mixed marriages are ok after all, great.

I like black metal, but I've never really been into Varg's works.
I don't like him, but I guess it's time for him to be free. We'll see how it happens afterwards, if he was really ready for society. Maybe we just won't hear about him anymore.

How come? Most of us here listen to a wide variety of music.

I listen to loads of black metal myself, almost as much as I do power metal.

Varg deserves to stay in prison for the rest of his life. He murdered someone else in cold blood, and that is that.

My guess is that they will just sensationalize and mystify the whole Norwegian black metal scene. One guy got killed and one blew his head off. Hardly a "wave of murders".

EDIT: Also, WTF, it's going to be shot in English by a Japanese director. As absurd as Tom Cruise playing a heroic Wehrmacht officer who speaks English with an American accent.

But they will make it cheesy and somehow I have this feeling they will water down his neo-nazi beliefs.

I feel a bit sad for this. I always thought Varg's story was a great opportunity for some young norwegian ingmarbergman, who actually has heard of black metal, to make a small indie movie that would get him/her recognition. What a waste.

I have no problem if a big studio makes the movie. The only problem I have is that they won't put any effort into it and then release it as a cheap summer blockbuster flick.

He's a dickwad, no doubt about it. But luckilly being a neo-nazi (or writing boring music!) isn't a crime in Norway, unlike in Germany (to be fair, this case I can understand), France, Romania etc.

There was a lot of violence back in early 90's especially in Norway. There was indeed a "wave" of violent events starting from Mayhem vocalist Dead's suicide. Bard Faust killed a homosexual man in '92 and that was what really triggered the whole thing. Since then, more murders, church burnings, suicides and acts of violence were committed.

There wasn't much ideological motivation behind all this though. At the time I think people were trying to outdo each other in violence. Afterwards they tried to justify their actions with some sort of ideological motivation but there really wasn't any such thing. They were 18-20 year olds, with hardly any concrete ideology formed in their minds besides blind violence and opposition to Christianity. Then they discovered Satanism, then Nazism. Then intellectualism.

Why it happened in Norway is quite a mystery. A country with very high standards of living and virtually no social issues or unrest. Maybe out of boredom.

As for having a French wife, Varg's race-mixing is referring to whites and non-whites. A white French woman obviously qualifies to him.

The legal and prison system is very liberal in Norway. Maximum sentence is 21 years. Usually people get out sooner.

This whole "movie" project is a cash-in rip-off. Stay away from it if it ever gets on the big screen. Even the book is crappy. It's such a joke. How on earth can you make a movie out of a book which only contains interviews?

That is exactly the explanation one Norwegian sociologist gave. The Norwegian society is very sheltered. But then again, violence is nothing out of the ordinary in Finland or Sweden either. Finland is actually one of the most violent countries in Europe, althought 'left-wing policies' have a strong foothold here.

Jon Nodveidt from Dissection was involved in the murder of an Algerian man in Sweden. Racially motivated. He was incarcerated then he commited suicide. The Absurd guys from Germany murdered a fellow student in their school. Incarcerated too. There were also cases of arson in the US. Even somewhere in, like, South America, a black metal guy killed a priest or something relatively recently. Plenty of suicides and violent crimes too.

No of course not. He is actually not very educated as far as I am concerned. Intellectualism is something some of them discovered later on in order to justify their actions. As I said, most of them are average IQ guys bordering to redneck. Like Tolkki's, Vikernes' mind is a mess.

Yes indeed. It's weird how people react even in environments as nurturing and protective as these. Maybe something's wrong with the Scandinavian model after all too.

It matters to him. He started being totally Nazi and anti-anything anti-Germanic (does that make sense?) but kinda mellowed down in time. I guess he has a stereotypical view of who is white; Norse, Germanic, Anglosaxon and Celtic with all the stereotypical "white" traits; light hair, eyes, skin etc plus indoeuropean non-christian cultural background.

That last bit is controversial as many whites racists/racialists in the US define themselves as strictly white, Anglosaxon and Protestant.
