How dare those guys use the name of Ronnie Jamed Dio? Don't use "DIO." Dio fans will not tolerate it. It will not help this band sell records nor gain recognition. It will only make the band look like rip-offs.

The "Distraught Overlord" and complety different genres are also a factor.

Guys, this is awesome! Some guy from Denmark is really trying to tell me that they maybe don't know who Dio is and that they've never heard of "that.. Heavy Metal thing."...Yeah..

I’m not sure how popular god is in Italy. The context of the bands name is from the Italian dio that means god. There are lots of people named dio as well as any other name. Maybe the smiths wanted a huge Mormon fanbase and named their band after Joseph smith. Perhaps they wanted labor to be on their side and like black smiths. I’m sure manowar took their name to attack fans of the jellyfish and so on. I think dio would be a rather easy name to hear about without ever knowing about a ronnie james dio. i think it would be a different thing if they played music that was more like dio but they really are going for a different market.

Sorry, but you have to be really navie to belive that they don't know who Ronnie James Dio is.

Such as stratovarius, who have took half of a famous violin maker name as combined it with a famous guitar? Dio has a name that is a word used in other language, I don't think that makes it an exclusive thing as a person’s last name when it means god as well. If you want to call it lame, sure go ahead, but the context of the name is god, not Ronnie James.

Stratovarius were at least creative and "invented" the bandname Stratovarius. They just ripped it off. And the whole "it is the italian word for god" thing is just a lame excuse.

I don't give a shit about the secound part. If their name was Distraught Overlord I wouldn't have a problem. But the fact that they chose to call themselfes "DiO - Distraught Overlord" pisses me off.

Yes. DIO is the full name of another band. No name conflict and only an idiot would be confused from either the name or the visuals or by listening to the music. RJD pulled dio as a stage name and his inspiration for it was a guy in the mafia. This is almost like you are saying Randy Jackson should not be known as randy Jackson since that will confuse people that are looking for Michael Jackson or the Jackson 5, since those have Jackson as part of their names. If some dude named Michael dio named his band "Michael dio's distraught overlord" would you say that's so lame as well?

I'm not talking about being confused. I know that the brand of metal that both bands make is different. But that is not my point. Do you know how I found out about this Dio bullshit from Japan? I was searching for Dio stuff on youtube! This is what I'm talking about! I typed Dio in the search bar of youtube and this shit came up! I'm pretty sure they knew about this side-effect when they chose their name. And this is just lame.

Why is RJD the only thing you associate with the word DIO?

Because he is one of my favourite singers and his solo band is Dio? Because up until a few weeks I didn't even know that Dio means "God" in italy? When I think about Dio and the subject is music the first thing that comes to my mind is Ronie James Dio. I know that Dio in their name is a short form of the real name. But you can't tell my that they chose this bandname without ulterior motives. They call it Visual Key but at the end of the day it is still Heavy Metal. And in Heavy Metal we already have a guy named Dio. And that guy is a legend in this genre.

This is almost like a Elvis Presley fan demanding a boycott of Elvis Costello since Elvis Presley is the only Elvis to them. It’s also kind of a like a dr. getting mad at dr. dre or doctor pepper for not really being a dr. or being pepper.

Stratovarious? Dream Theatre? Symphony Y? Paradise FOUND? Heckoween? Rhapsody of Water? You wouldn't find any of these names misleading?

The fact that symphony x has the word symphony is rather misleading. It’s also pretty much symphony of X with X being the identification as to what symphony it is as much as the BBC symphony orchestra indicates that it is the symphony of BBC.
