Musical Tributes

I just love the way the act Tenacious D tributes in their music. They have the song called Dio, telling how he has rocked for so long it's time to pass the torch to the D. They also did a song with Ronnie, Push, which has a very great intro in my mind: check the whole song out.

Speaking of Dio, you're all familiar with RBJ already, right? RIGHT? D:

There's also a Rainbow tribute in the end of the Helloween song Nothing to Say from the album Rabbit Don't Come Easy, where the singer Andi Deris suddenly puts out the line "I see the rainbow rising" the similar way Dio delivers it in the song Stargazer - love it! Both the tribute and the song. :P Or songs.

Of course, Helloween also have that straight mocking parody of the Scott McKenzie classic San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair) in their Chameleon album song Revolution Now.

I also take the Thunderstone song Face in the Mirror as a kind of a self-tribute. They just namedrop, like, 10 of their older songs by name alone. The Swedish heavy metallers Sabaton also did this, but with band names, in the song Metal Crüe. I also seem to remember they also have some Manowar song name dropping song. :D

There are dozens upon dozens of R&B etc. artists that loop some pre-used arrangement from another song and use it as their own. Also some pop artist - was it Kylie Minogue? - did a hit song onto the ABBA - Gimme, Gimme, Gimme melody. And only yesterday in the mall I heard from a pop radio channel a part of something that was built upon Nightwish's Amaranth.

So, that's a really small start, only some of those I could think of just right now when my brain is stuck and I'm very tired anyway. I'd want you people to continue the itty bitty list and comment on anything that has something to do with tributing. And mainly tributing, clear or hidden, or just suspecting tributing. Just no covers because that's another world entirely.

So, comment on and collect!

winter moonlight and one that combines power and march of time

are we counting musical imatation as tributes though? since stratovarius definitly has with with all the classical parts and whatnot. we can pretty much post most all music here then

Actually Sabaton has 2 Tribute Songs. One is Metal Crüe where they drop bandnames and the other one is Metal Machine where they namedrop old Heavy Metal classics.

I think Primal Fear somehow counts as a Judas Priest tribute as a whole if you will

Guys like Yngwie Malmsteen, Wolf Hofman from Accept and Olaf Lenk from At Vance also fall in the gab of tributes I guess.

And we can't have this thread without mentioning Kai Hansen. Listen to all the albums and you'll find a lot of small tributes to his Helloween days and to other Bands like Judas Priest. Especially in the later ones.

Pretty much, yeah, to some degree. If you wanna point out something, go ahead, or discuss about some well known things. This topic isn't meant to be a flawless tribute archive, just a cosey chit-chat about the topic. Every form is welcome, although not necessarily straight covers. If there are some interesting covers, though, that have clearly changed the original to much better or worse, feel free to post about them.

Flogging Molly, a blessed band, soooo good, have their Johnny Cash tribute in the lyrics of one of their coolest songs IMO, Sentimental Johnny, from the album Swagger.

The Kinks song Celluloid Heroes has clear references to many famous Hollywood actors. There's also a Finnish cover version of it by Juice Leskinen that commented some Finnish actors, the song Paperitähdet. :)
