Goodbye 'colossal' burger: Fatty menu items vanish
http://news.mobile.msn.com/en-us/articl ... d=33212306
Anyone want to pass Oprah a hanky?
Seriously, this is good news to a country where 1/3 are carrying extra weight and millions are even obese.
You would not think in these economic times many people could afford to eat out, but the fast food industry is a booming business and more and more Americans waistlines show it! Diabetes and heart disease cases are growing in number, too in proportion to popularity of fast food.
Something has to be done on the business level.
Of course, its a willpower issue, but not everyone will be responsible when it comes to their own eating habits. So, its neat that some eateries have stepped up to the plate(no pun intended)and have taken the first step in leading the USA toward healthier eating choices.

Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
OMG, I forgot to put Coffee and Tea drinks(ala Starbucks, etc)in the Poll!
Iceland has rid itself of McDonalds, but not for health reasons.
http://www.msnbc.com/id/33482636/ns/bus ... d_business
Personally, I like(rarely) KFC, Captain Ds Seafood Place, and Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors.
The last encounter with fast food was at my Grandsons BD party and us 7 adults ordered a large pizza from Dominos to enjoy while the kids were devouring the ice cream and cake. Some healthy trade off!
>sigh< The Colonel has my heart......probably literally!

Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
I forgot Chinese takeout, too! Chinese food is rather healthy, so IMO its in a different category than some fast food. But, in moderation Pizza can be healthy so maybe thats the key to health anyway: moderation in all things!
Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
by fast food, are we including prep time or just time from order to delivery? there are tons of healthy foods with little time from order to delivery when premade.

He said he liked McDonalds, so he enjoys fast food, too! He is only human!
I actually considered making a little joke about TT but I figured it would not be appropriate in a serious topic.
Yes from those Bowflex ads on TV the machine will cure anyone of a beer belly!

Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
What I always found funny is that people blame their health problems on what they eat and where they eat it, rather than how much they eat. Its a way of blaming their weight issues on an external organization, group, or item rather than pointing the finger at themselves. Fatties!
If you go to McDonalds and make healthy choices, eat in moderation, or burn of the calories with BowFlex™, you won't be obese. If you were going to get fat at McDonalds you would have done it at home anyway.

Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
If people want to eat healthy that's completely fine with me, however if I want to eat a huge grease dripping cheeseburger I should have the right to do that minus the guilt trip. I seriously do not need to be told on a daily basis that I'm clogging my arteries, that I'm murdering animals and that I can live to be 150 if I simply eat more healthy.
I want to clear up that this is not an attack on anyone, I'm simply stating my opinion on the fast food market. Eating fatty foods is a choice and so is eating healthy, I can compromise and I don't mind if people want some healthy alternatives on their menu, however I also don't want them messing with my grease filled fatty side of the menu, I'm going to eat it and continue to eat it, I'll respect them if they respect me.
As Denis Leary said on No Cure for Cancer when he said that people will say to him that red meat stays in your colon for 5 years "Good, I paid for it, I want it in my ass"

The San Francisco/ republican representative sloganGood, I paid for it, I want it in my ass
I think health cost/insurance is the case here. If people are going to pay all the bills on their own or form groups that are ok with the behavior habits, ok act as you wish. But when the bill is shared, I think people should come into agreement as to guidelines. I think there should be freedom and consequences for ones actions. I think the gains of certain diets should be persuasive enough, even if they aren’t, persuasion is better than forcing. I do think when people have children, that it gives them a moral obligation for certain behavior over other behaviors.
Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
Exactly. Nobody is forcing anyone to eat this stuff.hiro23 wrote: Eating fatty foods is a choice and so is eating healthy, I can compromise and I don't mind if people want some healthy alternatives on their menu, however I also don't want them messing with my grease filled fatty side of the menu, I'm going to eat it and continue to eat it, I'll respect them if they respect me.
Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
You see I don't mind if we have two different parties who eat differently yet respect each other.
However what pisses me off is when someone decides to be a health nut and ram their philosophy down my throat, don't get me wrong I know we meat eaters can be a major pain in the ass too, however in my case I respect the fact if someone is a vegetarian or Vegen and I never try and force them to eat meat. However in return I would ask that they don't sit there and tell me why my eating meat is wrong, and the health ramifications of it, I hear this day in and day out, the truth is I've made a choice and I am not ashamed of it.

Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
I think people should know the process of what it took to provide that fatty side of the menu. Some of these companies do some pretty rotten things in the process so I think people should know what kinds of behavior they are supporting when they buy from a place. I think people are only free to decide when they have the information that allows them to make a choice. If a person is ignorant of what they are supporting, I can't say I think that is being responsible.
Here is a little McDonalds article and one of the things is talks about is how McDonalds pays corrupt militaries to kick farmers off their own lands so McDonalds can take over.

Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
I don't eat at mcdonalds, ever since they stopped super sizing I've refused to eat there. Wendy's, Arby's, Subway and many pizza and chinese places are where I go.

hiro, I respect you a lot and think you've got a heart of gold, but icecab's response made me laugh so hard I almost fell out of my chairicecab21 wrote:great reason.ever since they stopped super sizing I've refused to eat there
I like all the stuff on the list, but avoid it on a regular basis for obvious reasons.
My favourites? Fried chicken, when it is done properly, is awesome. Pizza too... I love pizza.
I limit my fast food intake to one meal a week.

Thanks neonvomit and no I wasn't offended by Icecab's statement, I actually laughed really hard too.
I've gotten used to Icecab's brand of humor, I've had many discussions with him and he's actually one hell of a guy, I consider him a good friend.
I also am like you, I don't go out to eat all the time, I maybe go once a week however when I do I would like to know that what I'm eating is going to be something that I like and not tampered with.
Let me put it this way, if they can make meals with meat that still taste really good yet it is healthier for me, I will gladly take those, however I will not give up eating meat.
As I said it's the same thing with vegetarians and vegens for me, I respect their not wanting to eat meat and I would never force them too, I just would like to know I can go into a place to order a dish with meat in it and not get a lecture about what I'm eating.

Re: USAs Fast Food Tries to Slim Down
Now a song called "the biggie size blues" would make a great bonus track.
I do like to get big meals and divide it up and have it over a few days.
I was thinking good reason since a person can buy the bigger meal at a more economical cost and split it into two or more meals or divide it with a friend or such. It’s not so economical to buy the smallest size.
ok so we dont' have barry white singing "old country buffet, my first, my last, my everything" as a theme song. moderation is key here.

Deep-fried Coca-Cola is also not unheard of.
But I bring you...
Deep Fried Bacon

I also tried deep-fried ice cream once which was amazingly good.
