I have been reading these headlines for the past few days, about how these 4 European countries(especially Greece)are having really tough financial problems. There is even speculation that the EU is going to have to bail Greece out. It sounds really bad---not just for Europe but for the world as a whole.
I guess this blows apart the theory that Eorope will become the one-world government. After all, these problems are tearing it apart at the seams.
Hope this can be resolved. Soon.
Sorry. PIGS=Portugal, Ireland, Greece, Spain.
The 4 nations which are really financially troubled.

From the Financial Times-
A pledge by the European Union to stand by crisis-hit Greece punctured hopes in the financial markets yesterday of a swift rescue and raised fears of renewed selling.
Efforts by Nicolas Sarkozy and Angela Merkel, the French and German leaders, to paper over differences between Berlin and Paris on how to deal with the Greek debt crisis led to a summit statement in Brussels that stopped short of providing immediate support for Athens.
The leaders of the 27-nation bloc promised “determined and co-ordinated action if needed to safeguard stability” of the eurozone, which has been shaken by turmoil in bond markets amid fears that Greece’s debt problems could spread.
The accord amounted to an implicit assurance to help Athens if it had problems in refinancing debt in April and May.
But the lack of a detailed bail-out plan underwhelmed investors in financial markets. While global stocks and bonds made modest gains, the euro fell 0.9 per cent against the dollar.
Herman van Rompuy, the EU’s permanent president, described the deal as a “political statement” saying leaders had not come up with a detailed rescue package because Greece had not asked for assistance.
Mr Sarkozy said: “We have committed to a show of solidarity, transparency and discipline.”
The EU endorsed Greece’s plans to cut its budget deficit by 4 percentage points of gross domestic product this year.
The agreement lays out a set of guidelines that Greece will be expected to follow if it were to be given financial support, most probably from Germany, France and some other eurozone countries. Athens would be expected to “do whatever is necessary including adopting additional measures” to eliminate the deficit by 2012.
“The EU stands by Greece,” said Ms Merkel. “But first and foremost, Greece must implement its [deficit reduction] programme.”
Berlin, traditionally the EU’s paymaster, is, acutely conscious that the German public is unlikely to welcome any initiative open to the interpretation that German taxpayers would pick up the bill for decades of Greek profligacy, manipulation of financial statistics, public sector corruption and tax evasion.
Jonathan Loynes, an economist at Capital Economics, said the agreement was “disappointing. It seems to amount to little more than a vague statement of support for Greece.” Steven Major, at HSBC, said: “It all hangs on whether the implicit guarantees go down well with the markets. If they don’t, then there could be a sell-off.”
I personally don't agree that Greece will cause a financial crisis. Maybe in one area but not affecting the entire world.

I live in Spain, so I can tell you is the worst crisis I´ve ever experimented in my life, even worst than the period 92-95. Sure we are not so desperated as Greece, but we have been playing with fire, and now we are at hospital. We don´t have an efficient goverment, no ideas, no solutions, and 20% unemployment rate. It´s becoming dramatic, although the fu**ing goverment denies their responsability.
Replying to BEG,it is absolutely true that the politic union will not be possible in a long term. We are not the States. We the europeans have the same extension as the USA, but we are 41 countries, with so many different languages and dialects, cultures, points of view, and conflicts in 1000 years. What´s more, the economic union with the € is a disaster.
A example: in 2000, a white coffee cost around 100 pesetas ( the old spanish currency)= 0,6 € aprox. After the euro, a coffee was 1 euro ( 166,386 pesetas). So the inflation grew 66% in a month! but the salaries are really low in comparison with the rest of Europe.
It´s a pity, but I admit I am consideering the option of emigrating with my family. Spain used to be a marvellous country for living and stablishing a family, but now, it´s like Pandora´s box.

You made me laugh! good answer.
I know, dear Babylon. And, trust me, it is not the first time I am thinking to take a plane and say bye! I always have been interested in México. I think is a fascinating place. The only disagreement is : coming from a small turistic town, I don´t expect to stay in México D.F.! I would need other place in your country.

We have more things in common than differences, so, there´s a lot of advantages. AndI know the " gallegos" are warmly welcomed by our mexicans brothers.
So, is anybody interesting in eliminating our current goverment? 25 millions spaniards will well pay you!

I have to completely agree with gon's statement.
This is a FUCKING disaster.
I mean, when you go out you don't feel it (at least in Valencia), but there's something strange and maybe is the 4 million people without work.
You can always see a "man" called Zapatero saying nonsense and stupid things about the economy.
A long time ago, when the crisis was coming for all the world, Zapatero denied it and was always saying that everything was ok.
Everybody was telling him that there was a big problem coming but he said "nonooooooo, that's false!"
Why? because he didn't know how to solve the problem, nor his "mates". They know nothing about economy.
When Aznar was at the goverment, Spain was in the top (you can see the details if you want) and the estimations was that "Spain is gonna be the second economical power in Europe after Germany". The problem was that Aznar decided to help Bush a lot in the war(they were and they are really good friends), and the people here went mad for that and decided to fire this man and his goverment. Then the people(not me) decided to vote this Zapatero and his pseudo-communist stupid and silly theories. And now we have the result.
I'm not saying that the crisis is because Zapatero. cause all we know is a global problem. I'm saying that THANKS to him, we have no solutions right now. We had a simple cold, and now we are in the valley of death.
Anyway, be careful with the informations. There are a lot of markets wating to enter here in Spain spending very low cash and mainly from UK you can see always a lot of bad information about Spain. And the you see here in Spain, step by step more and more english people, mainly in the coast. And the PIGS thing obvioulsy is just to have a cool word to describe the situation of a lot of other countries too.
People here in Spain has been always very kind and happy and the nordic people coming here knows it cause they love Spain, but now everything here is getting mad.
