Tom Coburn, (R) Oklahoma, which would have prohibited federal funds form being used to purchase sex-enhancement drugs, such as Viagra, for sex offenders and child molestors.

Viagra was originally created to use in heart diseases/problems because the drug helps circulation. Its value as sexual enhancement was just an after thought/by-product.
Anyway, maybe thats why these guys are getting it because viagra is actually classed as a drug for the heart.

Yeah, thats right. Viagra is actually a heart medication. I guess when FDA was testing the drug it was discovered that it made the blood flow better everywhere. So, it was marketed as a sexual enhancement.

A quick Google search will show that Viagra does not increase libido. It helps in cases of actual erectile dysfunction, but won't otherwise do anything than provide a placebo effect.

What's the problem with passing an amendment that prohibits the dispensing of Viagra to felonious, predatory pieces of garbage that should still be locked up rather than being out on parole?

Also, why does HR 4872 exempt senior senatorial and congressional leadership from having to buy into the same types of plans as what is being imposed upon everyone else? Why are their "Cadillac" tax plans exempt? Why are prosthetic devices that are dispensed by doctors and rehab specialists at the VA to wounded and disabled veterans being taxed?

There is a surgical oncologist that I have to go see for a round of tests, since there is a history of cancer in my family. Colon cancer killed my grandfather, as well as his younger brother.

This particular doctor is no longer accepting new patients with Medicare and/or Medicaid- this is because it got to the point to where it was becoming a nightmare for him to even get reimbursed for his procedures- and that was at the reduced rates that Medicare will pay- far less than standard insurance.

In fact, he is not accepting any new patients, since he is getting out of the business altogther in a few years. The only reason why he's seeing me is because he felt terrible that they did not catch my grandfather's cancer in time to save him.

What about the friendly, neighborhood OB-GYN that mom has to go see for post-menopaual issues? The short answer is she (the doc) is tired of having to pay in execess of $250k per year in malpractice insurance, and on top of getting screwed by Medicare as well as the commerical insurance carriers, and she is also planning on closing the doors of her practice when she is at retirement age.

There was nothing in HR 4872 that dealt with tort reform, which was definitely a victory for the ABA- the American Bar Association. God knows that we have enough lawyers in Congress already, and heaven forbid that they should have to give up campaign contributions from the ABA in 2010 and 2012! There are now more lawyers in America than there are doctors!

Another big loophole in HR 4872 was that the pharmaceutical companies also got their goodies as well. No collective bargaining, requiring bids, generic substitutes, etc. for prescription drugs. So Americans will continue to pay the highest prices in the world for their meds, and no bargaining or wheeling and dealing is allowed. If you guessed that the pharmaceutical industry leaders are major contributors to both political parties- including pedocrats, then move to the front of the class.

As I've stated before, I had done IT network consulting and setup billing/payment systems for a great many medical practices over the years, and these practices really have to be at the top of their business game (efficieny wise) if they want to even have a chance of being paid by any insurer, and that includes Medicare/Medicaid.

At the end of the day, it's a simple matter of supply and demand. The demand for medical treatment and services will by no means go away, nor will the demand decrease. The goverment (and the insurers) can try to "lower the costs" by denying claims based on bullshit assertions, but all that is going to do is to reduce the supply of available people and institutions that are available to provide these services.

TennCare damn near bankrupted Tennessee, and if they continue to cut payments, there are already a number of hospitals that are already at risk of going bankrupt. This is in addition to a growing number of private physicians that refuse to accept TennCare anymore.

Dealing with them was a fucking nightmware on the systems end- you can transmit the claims electronically, but when in execess of 50% are denied for one reason or another, it doesn't take long for the docs to figure out that they cannot spent $1000.00 in office staff labor to collect on a $200.00 claim.

Insurance companies, including Medicare, frequently spend more money (on tech, labor, and so on) denying claims than they do simply paying them, and are the only industry that I can think of that spends billions of dollars per year on IT to be less efficient and more bureacratic.

I contracted for a large systems integrator during the Y2k projects, and one of the clients was a large, well known carrier that any American would be familiar with.

We were pushing Ghost images out to thousands of machines via multicast, and when we got to the programming department, your jaw would have hit the floor if you had seen all of the workorders stapled and taped to the walls of the cubicle farms. It was literally thousands of change orders from finance to create code to deny claims based on just about any type of criteria that you could possible imagine. I've never seen anything like that in my life, and this was back in 1999!

Even today, BCBST (Blue Cross/Blue Shield of TN) still uses these ancient, shitty, slow RAS servers running banks modems on POTS lines for claims submission.

They claim that it is for "security", even though the public BCBST websites that are used for claims reseach by both policy holders as well as physicians require a secure SSL login, and multiple OC-3 connections (the equivalent of 84 T1's) are the pipes into their site.

I could go on, and on, and on, but hopefully this is just a bird's eye view of just some of the shit that is going on. If Medicare and the VA programs administered by the Fed are any indication of things to come, then things are going to be getting a lot more shitty than the already are.

My opinion about Obama aside, this reform is a really good thing and it's a shame it didn't exist before. This is not a socialism, it's a basic human decency. Indeed, someone has to pay for it and those will be the working people (at least this is how it works here - I pay a small percentage of my salary, no matter how small is it, on health care), but you never know when you might need it ...
