Dream Theater

I was unpacking some of my boxes full of CD's and found my Dream Theater collection again. Started listening again this afternoon and I'm still totally in love with them. They're all so good at their instruments and James LaBrie's voice is just superb!

Anyone else here who likes them?

I love them and Score dvd is the best performance I've ever seen.

There's no other band like this one regarding technical quality. Petrucci = god.

My favourite album (as a whole album) is Awake.

Songs like:

A nightmare to remember
A rite of passage
Anna Lee
As I am
Burning my soul
Caught in a web
Constant Motion
Endless Sacrifice
Erotomania
Forsaken
Hell's Kitchen
Hollow years
In the name of god
In the presence of enemies I and II
Innocence Faded
Learning to live
Lie
Lifting Shadows off a Dream
Metropolis Part 1 - The miracle and the sleeper
Misunderstood
Never enough
Octavarium
Panick attack
Perfect Strangers
Peruvian Skies
Prophets of war
Pull me under
Sacrificed sons
Scarred
Strange deja vu
Stream Of consciousnes
Space dye vest
Surrounded
Take the time
The answers lies within
The best of times
The count of Tuscany
The Dark eternal night
The mirror
The root of all evil
The shattered fortress
The spirit carries on
The test that stumped them all
These walls
This dying soul
Under a glass moon
Voices
Wither
The whole Scenes from a memory, the whole 6DOIT...

etc, etc, etc...are just pure art.

There are really different periods in DT history.

I just love the work of Derek Sherinian in FII .
I like a lot Kevin Moore in I&W and Awake too, anyway he was a bit more "simple". Derek is just incredible imo.

Rudess...well Rudess is the typical man that can hold all the possible styles in his hands and his continuum parts are just wonderful. I think is the best of them, and it's just different.

Labrie is just amazingly amazing. And it's wonderful live. I love his voice.

Myung... he is the best bass player out there, you just have to listen the excelent work in FII or in songs like ITPOE I and II, but with the Rudess arrival (mainly from 6DOIT), he is not as prominent as before.

Portnoy is a fantastic composer and I just can't understand how he can play that mega drum kit :lol: . He is very very technical and knows a lot about composition.

Petrucci...nothing more to say about Petrucci. If somebody wants to know Petrucci, i't easy: listen to the solos and guitar work in "In the presence of enemies part I", "The Count of Tuscany", "The Best of times", "Octavarium",, "The spirit carries on", "Peruvian Skies", etc, etc and there you have it.

SCORE is an absolutely emotional trip (thaks Lurdi for the gift). The Octavarium thing with the beginning, seeing Rudess playing the continuum, the whole orchestra at the final part with the incredible Petrucci solo holding the note up there...Well...I'm constantly shocked with this man.

The funny thing is that back in 2004 when I listened to them I couldn't get in, I suppose cause my ears were not prepared. This is (in 80% of his discography) really technical and not easy music.

Same, I am not familiar with their whole discography, but they played here about 3 weeks ago and blew me away. Extremely talented musicians.

Well I like every album they have done.

But if you want my recommendations, here tey are:

- My favorite album till this day is Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory. Just a wonderful album with a nice story.

- Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From a Memory is closely followed by the Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence album.

- Another really cool one is Octavarium.

Those three albums I strongly recommend to you.

I always wondered about those shows. Don't they piss some fans of with that? I know that I would be pissed if I payed for a Rage or Stratovarius concert to hear their songs and they would come on stage and say "We're playing Iron Maiden's Number Of the Beast!"

I believe they played two concerts that night.
the 6DOIT had absurdly long shows, like, 3-4 hours.

Most professional band I've ever had the pleasure of seeing! Top tier musicianship and compositions...have everything by the band and their side projects. Maiden and DT tour later this year....so stoked!

I love this one:

Beyond this life (it's from Scenes from Memory) - live in Budokan with 8 minutes of improvisation :)

Part II:

Also LaBrie is in his best.

Train of Thought was a little too "modern", for my tastes. I really think the first 4-5 albums were the most original.

Take Octavarium, for instance. Not a bad song on that album but...why copy Muse so deliberately? Dream Theater practically created modern progressive metal. Their decision to make a quasi-muse-tribute album was pathetic and disheartening, to say the least. Or maybe, to say the most. It wasn't THAT bad. :lol:

Balu wrote:Ah, I love 'em too, though I haven't listened to lot of their works. What albums could you recommend?
I would start with "Awake" or maybe "Images & Words" (both excellent albums), and then when you get more into them try "Falling Into Infinity", "Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory" (a truly masterpiece), "Six Degrees Of Inner Trubulence", and if you want the dark side of them, strongly recomend "Train Of Thought"

Mine's favourite will always be SDOIT, and all their songs: The Glass Prision (by far my most favourite song of all), Blind Faith, Misunderstood, The Great Debate, Dissapear, Six Degrees Of Inner Turnulence (Overture, About To Crash, War Inside My Head, The Test That Stumped Them All, Goodnight Kiss, Solitary Shell, About To Crash [Reprise], Losing Time - Grand Fianle)

And some songs you should listen to:
* A Fortune In Lies
* Afterlife
* Only A Matter Of Time
* Pull Me Under
* Take The Time
* Metropolis Pt.1
* Under A Glass Moon
* Caught In A Web
* A Mind Beside Itself (Erotomania, Voices, The Silent Man)
* The Mirror :)
* Lie :)
* A Change Of Seasons
* New Millennium
* Peruvian Skies
* Hell's Kitchen
* Take Away My Pain
* Just Let Me Breathe
* Strange Deja Vu
* Fatal Tragedy
* Beyond This Life
* Home
* The Spirit Carries On
* Finally Free
* SDOIT (All)
* As I Am
* This Dying Soul
* Endless Sacrifice
* Honor Thy Father
* The Root Of All Evil
* Panic Attack
* Never Enough
* Forsaken
* Constant Motion
* The Dark Eternal Night
* A Nightmare To Remember
* Wither

Hope it helps (Yeah, I'm a huge DT fan :D)

Save the blind fandom from the newer fans. Nobody wants to listen to Falling Into Infinity.

FII it's a "strange" album for many people. But I think the composition is just perfect.

I think every album has something interesting. This band is amazing. What about BC&SL? I think it's and absolutely masterpiece. TCOT or ANTR are incredible songs. Some people talks about the heavy thing in ToT, but Awake had a lot of heavy songs too, mixed with melodic. ToT is really dark and depressing, a fantastic album.
I think you can listen a lot of variation in DT discography, and you can listen different albums depending on your mood or moment.

I just hope they release the Twelve-step Suite live.
