Pitch Widht Modulation

Here musicians can talk to each other about making music etc. Of course if you are not a musician you are still welcomed to this board, but the topics should somehow be about making music.

Pitch Widht Modulation

Post by cl4udiolari » Wed Apr 29, 2009 3:14 pm

Hey people..

i know it's well discussed here and around on the web but i am really pissing off myself with this argue.

I am talking about PWM and which controls are used to get that "Weooow" effect on latest Jens's lead Sound.

I can manage to Modulate the Pitch width of a pulse wave in order to get that sound, but when i distort it, it loose it's charactristics and its harmonics which on Jens Lead fool around 500hz +or-.

I don't know if its the synth i am using, the dist i'm using or just i go wrong with some editing.
I tried to modulate pitch manually via an LFO which was connected to the pitch width, i tried to assign the pitch width to the velocity or to the keytrack but i still cannot get the same weeo, also if i recognize the sounding is similar.

Please help me ouutt im getting crazy =D

bye again my friend and remember to vote for a song
on the cover recording thread =)

This is too technical for me, but still interesting.

claudio =) havent seen or heard from you in a while! since progsounds, like a year or 2 now lol.

I think I can help you out. My lead has changed since the last time you heard it =) much closer to the real thing I think =)

ill post a sample up later so you can hear it.

What synth are you using to create this sound? If I understand correctly, when you turn on the JD10 you cant hear the PWM anymore? If thats the case then its not the pedal its your synth. Oh and I would say its around 500hz for sure. For this Lead sound dude its all about the Filter. Once you post your gear and a basic over-view of the lead you have so far ill help you more there.

Hey!!! nice to see you araound here =P yup it a was a while since we talked last!!

ok, thanks for the answer! this is my acutal lead sound

http://ceeleroyal.altervista.org/elements.mp3 Right Click and Saves to..

and now i tell you the specifics which are a bit unusual =)

i use Rob Papen Predator AU as Synth and i run it throug a compresso > 2 speakers emulations > Chorus > Delay > Reverb > EQ

On the Synth:

OSC:
1 OSc Pulse with Pulse Widht Modulation on Free Run
Osc Symmetry: 37%
PWM Amount: 29% at 0,12hz

FILTER:
Cutoff Freq 20,5Khz
Resonance: 9%

MODULATION:
Velocity: Filter Cutoff Frequency: +58%
Keytrack: 30%

That's it...i have also the Polysix btw =P[/i]

wow man thats pretty good! You sort of took the same route I did. Not sure how you dont have a flanger on but in the sample you it sounds like there is one.
But yours is probably the best I have heard come from a Soft Synth.

What are your 2 speaker simulator parameters? Also your Filter cutoff is a bit high, lower that a little and put a key tracking of +50 it should sound even better! Then again I have never used that soft Synth so im assuming things on it lol.

Oh I was wonder about when you said the JD10 destroys PWM Character. Could you expand on that.

Well..about Distortion is all about the amount of gain, because i know well that a signal processed through a distortion or an amp simulator alterate the shape of the signal and in somewho let the sound lose its characteristics...and so with pwm! so need to be carefull!

What i actually realized is that Jens used to get that sound by increasing the volume of some frequencies of its sound, which with the jd10 comes out so wwweeooow...there are so many harmonics on a pwm lead sounds, but he managed to find the best sounding one...i need more editing to let it sound good! i changed another time since you heard it yesterday adding a ParameterEQ.

As for the use of a Flanger, well i don't actually use it...what you hear is a very slow, near 0hz chorus which is pretty similar to the flanger!

ill update you tomorrow!!
byee for now!
