Fast or Epic?

Here musicians can talk to each other about making music etc. Of course if you are not a musician you are still welcomed to this board, but the topics should somehow be about making music.

Fast or Epic?

Post by guitarmaster »

Which solos do you think require more skill and sound better? Fast and insane(Herman Li) or epic and expressive(Timo Tolkki)? Just wanted to get everyones opinion. I'm not trying to make a point either. I'm just asking.

Dude, I'm just saying "John Petrucci", and there you've got the answer. A good guitarist can do both. And fast guitarists can play super melodic wonderfull stuff, of cours I think Timo Tolkki, (especially in his earlier days), is able to do both.

You can practise a fast lick 4000 times and then churn it out robotically.

You can practise something expressive and slow your whole life and never get it right.

One skill you can learn, the other you just need to feel.

Guess which is harder.

I like when bands combine fast with epic songs. But nowardays I prefer epic I think, that is why I love Age of aquarius, even if there were maybe two semi-ballads to much.

Well, for my part, I hesitate between a lot of excellent guitarists, among them Petri Lindroos, Jari Maenpaa, Timo of course, Alexi Laiho, Emmppu, Marc Jansen, Thomas Youngblood, Andre Olbrich, well, there's a lot! :D

EPIC AND EXPRESSIVE..!!!!
FOR MY OWN EXPERIENCE...THEY ARE MORE DIFFICULT TO CREATE AND COMPOSE, AND PERFORM...

I have to say epic and expressive, not even half of the fast solos are actually interesting.

Something like Speed of Light has a awesome fast solo.
